Easy Peasy to install. Just need a chisel, snap ring pliers, and 36mm socket to get the drums off. (Never-Lube bearings) Then a 9/16" socket and some wire cutters to get off the backing plate. Be sure to get heatshrinking crimp-on connectors to reattach the wires behind the backing plate. Everything went together smoothly. Still need to tow the trailer and let the self adjusters do their thing, but it'll be awhile before our next trip. FWIW we have an Airstream with about 50K miles on it and I replaced the brakes as a precaution. They actually still had many miles remaining on the linings and magnet.

by:

Everything came and went on fine. check to make sure the shoes and adjusters are seated properly before installation. Mine weren't. One inner grease seal was damaged and I had to buy another one at the local parts store to complete my installation (hence the 1 star reduction). Note that the outer washer is not included with the hub/drum kit and you will have to reuse your old ones.

Comments
Thank you for your review. I apologize about the grease seal. Customer Service will be contacting you to remedy it.

If a new RV isn't going to have disk brakes, then they should all come with these. Pretty straight forward replacement. I didn't get new drums, just had the old ones turned.

Super easy to install, very fast shipping and packaged well. I replaced all the brakes on my horse trailer, due to worn out wiring on the magnets, which was causing brake failure.

It’s been a year and almost 5K miles on the new brakes. Absolutely no problems whatsoever. Will definitely purchase again when the time comes.

Comments
I replaced them about 4 months ago with the Lippert brakes. I wasn’t happy with the performance I was getting out of the Dexter Brskes.

I recently completed a brake upgrade on my trailer. The new Never Adjust Dexter Brakes went on flawlessly. I found the process to be straight forward. The self-adjusting feature was an upgrade from the previous brakes but bolted on with no issues. I like the idea of not needing to adjust brakes as the pads wear down. I needed all new brakes, this seemed like the best decision for replacements.

- 23-458-459
by:

It took me a while to get them right, but now they're working well. You have to put the hub on and off, adjusting the shoes, until the shoes are out as far as possible, centering the shoes, by operating the brakes between trys. After that they will adjust themselves, but if they are not adjusted close, they won't. The installation and wiring is child's play, just make sure the shoes barely scrape the drums. After that they've stayed adjusted up well. I took a 3000mi. trip and they performed well.

Comments
Definitely 5 stars. They took a little tinkering to get adjusted to the point where they would adjust themselves, but that 2 years ago, and Im very happy. My 37ft.5th wheel stops so much better. Id do this again in a heartbeat.

A reviewer on your site mentioned his grease seals leaking. Well that's just what seems to have been the problem on our trailer. Although the brake shoes and magnets were worn the real problem was the grease, I think from the previous owner pumping too much grease in after each use. I've replaced the brake units and inner seal on one axle(the front) and it should make quite a difference. Glad I went with original Dexter parts.

One year later: replacement brakes were an exact fit and have performed flawlessly on the trips which took us from SC to Florida Keys, then to western NY and back to SC. Thanks etrailer.com.

Quick and easy to install, and units work great. A few bolts and splice up the wires, thats really all there is to it. Ideal to replace these when you are doing your bearing maintenance. These were used to replace brakes that had been damaged by Grease intrusion from leaking bearing seals, stopping power is a night and day difference.

Very nice brake set up. Delivered as stated. Installation was a snap. Pre lubed hubs are the way to go. Just slide them on and set the tension. One dust cap was dented in shipping or packaging? But did not defray from the product quality.

These are high quality oem brakes with the self adjust feature. They were very easy to install.

As usual with etrailer I ordered a much cheaper brake kit but that one was out of stock and back ordered. It’s frustrating cuz this seems to happen a lot with etrailer. The Dexter brake kits were top quality, bolted on easily and work great. They are made in USA which all of us should be more concerned with. The first product I selected was a chinese made product but the price was right. I am very pleased with the product it’s self, however coming out of pocket with almost $200 more for the the Dexter brakes was an unexpected cost. etrailer needs to stop selling products they do not have in stock!!

- 23-458-459
by:

i have only used the new brakes for 1000 miles or so, but they have worked as expected. delivery was prompt. i would definitely buy from etrailer again. when installed, i was chasing a brake issue which my in the cab brake controller identified as an intermittant short circuit. i could have diagnosed the cause to a specific wheel, but decided to replace all four wheel brake assemblies since the existing units were original, about 12 yrs old, but in good condition. doing so did not fix the problem, but eliminated the brake assemblies as a possible cause. the cause of the fault was in one of the two cross axle wire cables. i replaced all of the trailer brake wiring starting ahead of the forward axle, and that solved the issue although i was not able to find the exact location of the short. while replacing the cable, i re-routed the wiring so that none went through an axle tube and the length of the cable to each wheel brake was equal to the others. keeping the runs equal in lenght insured equal power to each wheel with the hope that all four wheels would brake evenly.

after about another 1000 miles and one year, im pleased to report the new brake assemblies from etrailer as well as the rewire of the trailers brake system are performing well.

The whole experience of ordering my replacement brake assemblies was awesome. Teresa did a fantastic job of figuring out which parts I needed. I would not hesitate to order parts from e-trailer in the future. The quality and fit-up of the Dexter brake assemblies made repairing my rv easier than I could have imagined. I am one happy camper. Thank you for an awesome consumer experience from start to finish.

The parts I purchased are working fantastic. I still consider the complete experience to be a 5-star transaction and will definitely order from e-trailer if I need parts in the future.

Product is great, order was easy and fast delivery, but most of these parts came with the boxes badly damaged,,very poorly boxed, had to spend alot of time just taping the boxes up to be steady enough to be put on my parts shelf for when needed in the future without the parts falling out of the boxes

These brakes were perfect replacements for the originals on my trailer. They are complete units and install pretty easily, although you have to make sure the brake shoes are centered on the plates and the Nev-R-Adjust cables are routed where they are supposed to be. Mine were knocked out of place during shipping, but it wasn't difficult to correct. I don't have many miles on them yet, so can't comment on durability, or how well the self adjustment feature works.

Replaced all four brake plate assy's, hubs and bearings on my AS from etrailer last year. The buying and shipping experience from etrailer was very good. I have 5000 miles on them with no problems and plan another 5000 mile trip this spring. Will be inspecting each wheel before departing and will update my review at a later date. So far I'm very pleased with etrailer's service and products. Lynn

Thank You etrailer and in particular Adam E. I realized that the brakes on my 2005 Airstream Safari were not going to adjust enough to provide safe braking for our planned trip from Indianapolis, IN to Santa Fe, NM, Cortez, CO, and Moab, UT I called etrailer on Thursday Sept 26 and spoke with Adam E. I explained my trailer setup - 12 x 2" brakes on a 4400# Henschin double axel The brakes I was looking at were listed for Dexter and Lippert axels - there was no mention of the Henschin axels I was working with. I asked Adam E. if he had the bolt spacing for the 5 bold mounting flanges - he researched a diagram in etrailer archives which showed the bolt pattern and spacing - I matched the pattern and ordered for overnight shipment - Adam E. made shure my order was shipped - they arrived as requested on Sept. 27 I installed the Dexter brakes successfully on Sept. 28 and we left Sept. 29 on a wonderful 4100 mile trip through the great SouthWest with comfort and confidence knowing we had plenty of stopping power for any terrain we might find. Thank You Adam E. and etrailer Great People / Great Service / Great Products / Great Prices

Technically speaking, it's not really necessary to pre-adjust Nev-R-Adjust brakes. You'd find a big empty parking lot, set your brake controller gain to 50 percent or so and speed up to 25. Then hit the manual brake switch on your brake controller without using the tow vehicle brakes. These should be hard stops.
