Quick Tip: There's really not a whole lot to getting new drum brakes. If you've confirmed that all of the specs listed above line up with what you need for your trailer, you can be pretty sure these will work for you.

How to Manually Adjust Trailer Brakes

The more miles you put on your trailer, the more your brake pads will wear down. As they lose contact with the drum, stopping distances get longer and longer. To keep your brakes working great, it's important to adjust them pretty routinely. For this job, grab a floor jack and either a brake adjustment tool (sold separately) or just a standard flathead screwdriver.

Jack up your trailer enough to get the wheel(s) off the ground. Remove the adjuster plugs from the backing plate on the brake, and insert the flat end of the tool through the back of the assembly.

Push in on the star gear and lift it up. Keep doing this until the brake pads catch on your drum. When you can't spin your wheel by hand anymore, back the gear off by about 10 clicks by pushing down on the star gear. Does the wheel now spin freely (even if it sounds like the brake pads drag slightly on the drum)? Great! Then you're all done with that one and ready to adjust the rest.

How to Break In New Brakes

After you get these brakes installed and adjusted, you'll need to break them in. First, find a long stretch of road or a big, empty parking lot. Once you're there, set your brake controller to its maximum setting and get moving. Speed up to about 40 mph and brake to slow to about 20 mph. Repeat this 15-30 times. The goal is to get the brake shoes and magnet properly seated into your drum. You'll know you've done that when it feels less jerky (and more consistent) each time you apply the brakes.

Note: The brakes will be very hot after doing this, so after every 10 stops you'll want to wait about 10 minutes to let the brakes cool off before continuing. If you don't, you might cook and crack the pad material.

If your trailer brakes are like mine were this is the item for you. I purchased a used excavator and it came with a trailer, well the trailer was thrown into the deal for a reason. All the brakes for both axels had multiple problems, cracked shoes, bad magnets, various rusted parts. After totaling the cost of all the individual items I would need, the cost of a brand new brake kit was only a little more and much more easy to replace, five mounting bolts off five on. I do recommend one thing, in the instructions your given the torque setting for the bolts, so Dexter must feel it's important, so use a torque wrench, rent one if you don't own one.


I managed to get them on, using new wires from vehicle to brakes and marine grade glued crimp-on connectors near the end of last season. Kept the boat and trailer covered and up against the wall of the house for the winter. But mid summer I hooked up the truck and the brakes did not work. The emergency battery does not charge either when plug is connected. After spending all last summer working on the trailer, I spent this summer working on the boat, and just am not willing to get into why the brakes don't work. Ford F-150 does not match color codes. There should be more information about how to identify proper wires from truck to trailer wires, or what should be hot when. I never found a lead that was always hot, whether the key was in or out or on or off or engine running. But last season, everything worked for state inspection. All I know is it was a real science project last year, one I don't wish to repeat. Maybe it is a fuse on the truck. I don't care this year.


Installation was relatively simple. Cut the existing electric brake wires and remove the backing plate with shoes assembly. Follow by installing the new brake assembly and connect the electrical wires. We use this trailer often through the spring, summer, and fall to transport our race car, and the brakes have performed flawlessly!


I received 3 boxes all of which had some sort of damaged or destroyed parts in it. All of the bearing kits are garbage, I will need replacements. The back plate and pad assemblies were ok, only two I had to installed the adjuster bolt back into and inspect for damage, but only received 2 of 4 nut and plug kits seen in pictures attached. Everything was improperly boxed, boxes are way too large for these components and hardware/bearing kits were packaged with very heavy components. Bearing kits should have been shipped separately in a small package. Bearing kit was also not in a proper bag, if not a ziploc at least tape the bag shut. I hope the drums are ok, I will have to grind on 2 of them just to allow the wheel to mate properly. I will have to measure all of the races and drum dimensions to ensure they are not warped or bent in any way. Extremely unhappy with this purchase. What a waste of components.

These are the real deal. Original Dexter components. Great quality and fitment. Came with new locknuts for assembly. Easy, do it yourself replacement. My wires were long enough to connect before I placed these on the axle which made it a much easier job than trying to connect the wires with the backing plates installed. These were installed on a Cronkhite 2000 series 12300lb equipment trailer with Dexter 6000lb axles. Exact replacement. Great packaging and very quick delivery from eTrailer.

Wow that was great. 1962 tandem axle was missing shoes and magnets so I ordered the 5 bolt pattern. Perfect fit connected wires, test drove it, perfect!

Customer service was great! Because my parts were back ordered, etrailer thought they could substitute my needed parts. When I was able to look at the parts after ordering, I was able to see that they would not work for my application. Not even ten minutes had passed when I called back to request my original backing plates. To my astonishment, Chelsea told me my order was already boxed and on the truck and it could not be pulled.     Sounds like a mechanical issue with the brake assemblies. You'd want to take the wheel and hub off and inspect the assemblies and drums for anything that looks broken or out of place and replace as needed.     It is not required to replace all of the brakes at once on your tandem axle trailer. However, you should replace the opposite side brake assembly on that same axle as you said.
