  Since we know you have a Dexter axle setup and the current assemblies are 10 inch by 2-1/4 inch we know that the correct brake assemblies you'd need are the # 23-468-469 for a set that includes a left and a right which are self-adjusting. The part number # 23-454-455 would be if you had the older 4,400 lb axles which are quite a bit rarer. Measure the diameter of the axle and if it's 2-3/8 inch that would verify it's a 3,500 lb axle and correct kit would be # 23-468-469.

  A 10 x 2-1/4 inch brake assembly would typically be found on a 3500 lb axle, and would use a 4 bolt mounting flange whose holes are 2-7/8 inches apart on center. However, there was an exception. Before May of 2009, Dexter manufactured a 4400 lb capacity axle that used mounting flanges that had holes that were 2-13/16 inches on center.   Though I would not be able to answer for parts that are on your trailer now, it is a good idea for your brakes to match your axle's weight capacity. As for a replacement, I could not find a reference to the brakes you have now, and the only replacements that fit a 10" x 2-1/4" drum have a 4-bolt mounting flange or a very specific 4-bolt flange with 2.83" x 2.83" spacing. Since the brake kit you referenced has a 4-bolt flange do you have 2.83" x 2.83" spacing or need a different size?

  We have electric drum brakes rated for 4400-lb axles (and hydraulic drum brakes rated for 3750- and 5200-lb axles) but none rated for exactly 4000-lbs. For electric drum brakes in the 10 x 2-1/4-inch size for a 5th wheel the 4400-lb-rated brakes will be fine.   There should be a tag or information stamped into the axle. It sounds like you have the D44 axle which is a 4,400 pound Dexter axle. If it was made after May 1, 2009 then Dexter lists brakes # K23-462-463-00 as the correct brakes for the axle. If the axle was made before May 1, 2009 then the correct brakes are # 23-454-455.

• Choosing the Correct 10 x 2-1/4 Inch Electric Brakes
  The brakes need to fit the axle. Or more specifically the hubs and the brake mounting flanges on the axle. One thing that may be confusing you is that brake assemblies for 4,400 pound axles and those for 3,500 pound axles are both 10 x 2-1/4 inches. The difference will be the brake mounting flange bolt hole pattern. If your axle is a indeed a 3,500 pound axle # AKEBRK-35-SA will work for you.
