Quick Tip: There's really not a whole lot to getting new drum brakes. If you've confirmed that all of the specs listed above line up with what you need for your trailer, you can be pretty sure these will work for you.

Self-Adjusting Brakes Don't Require Routine Maintenance

With standard electric brake assemblies, you need to manually adjust them every now and then to make sure you're getting the shortest stopping distance every time you tow.

A trailer drum brake with a red callout shows the location of a tension cable and pulley on a self-adjusting trailer brake.

With self-adjusting brakes, though, you'll always have peak stopping power - simple as that! As the brake pads wear over time, a tensioning cable will automatically keep the pads in alignment so they'll consistently make contact with your drum when you brake. You won't have to do tedious manual adjustments anymore.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

Dexter invests a lot of resources to ensure that these brakes meet the requirements for certification set by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). Basically, a CSA certification tells you that these trailer brakes are well-built and safe for use on the road.

How to Break In New Brakes

Once you get these brakes installed, you'll need to break them in. First, find a long stretch of road or a big, empty parking lot. Once you're there, set your brake controller to its maximum setting and get moving. Speed up to about 40 mph and brake to slow to about 20 mph. Repeat this 15-30 times. The goal is to get the brake shoes and magnet properly seated into your drum. You'll know you've done that when it feels less jerky (and more consistent) each time you apply the brakes.

Note: The brakes will be very hot after doing this, so after every 10 stops you'll want to wait about 10 minutes to let the brakes cool off before continuing. If you don't, you might cook and crack the pad material.

Etrailer really came through good price fast shipping and helpful videos the brakes along with their spring kit breathed new life in this old trailer

William M.

@Tommy They do work very well! Why would anyone go with manual brake assemblies when these are available?

Came right when they said it would and the install was supper easy. Hardest part was getting the old parts off. No issues whatsoever, I highly recommend using the Dexter Self-adjusting brakes. See the before and after photos. Etrailer is the place to buy your products.

They arrived when promised. What I really like best about the backplates is they are made in the good old USA and they installed perfectly. Thank you Dexter and eTrailer. Terri N. was very helpful as well!

All parts arrived timely as always. All parts fit, the install videos are very good. All the things that makes etrailer the best to get parts for my rv. The install is easy, the most difficult activity was removing the old parts.

It didn't help give me any more braking than I had. Eventually I had to upgrade to electric over hydraulic brakes which cost me $[XX].

Everything fit properly and installation went smoothly. All needed parts were included, which was nice. The self-adjust worked well and break-in was quick.
I've only put about 1500 miles on the trailer since install, so I can't speak to longevity.
I'd buy them again though.

Customer service was great to work with. Parts arrived timely, undamaged, fit, and have been working great so far. Very happy.

Just received and unboxed today, product looks excellent just as I would expect from Dexter. Should be a easy install.

Great, stopping power is fantastic!

Exact fit and great price. This is by far the easiest way to replace trailer brakes. etrailer is always a pleasure to business with. Fast free shipping.

Work as advertised. No longer have to worry about the trailers braking power!

Great product. Very easy installation.

Diana was very helpful when ordering these brakes. The prices are good and everything arrived at the promised time in good condition. The brakes are an exact replacement of the original and everything went together well. One of the easiest brake jobs I’ve ever done. I recommend etrailer and will buy from them again.

After one year the brakes are working as expected. I really like the way they self adjust.

Very easy to swap these new assemblies onto the trailer. Remove the five nuts, pull-off old assembly assembly and you're ready to install new brakes. Not having to pull the individual components off as is done on a car makes this a snap. Looking forward to see how well self-adjustment feature really works.

easy to install , just bolt ,adjust and go

Quinn was superb. He helped me get the parts I needed to change out the brake assemblies on my 5th Wheel RV.

The parts were ordered on Tuesday morning, and arrived today.

Now I can get on with the project.

Thank you Quinn, and etrailer.

I wanted genuine Dexter made in the USA parts that were the same as on my RV, Never-Adjust, and that is what I got. Little disappointed they were back ordered from etrailer, but ordered another set through [online store] and got them in a few days. etrailer I had to wait 2 weeks. Now I have spares in case I need them on short notice.

The new one I installed from etrailer still working fine. I carry spares just in case.

Best replacement brake assembly for dexter 7k axles! Never thought my mammoth trailer could stop so well.

These are OEM parts that are identical to what was on our 2019 5th wheel. Delivery was great (2 days) and very well packed. It was easy to pick the correct parts using the tools on

Replaced all parts with equipment made in the USA. etrailer is fantastic. Their customer service is fantastic.

Fast shipping (2 days) and shipped in original packaging. Easy installation.

Dexter brake kit was very easy to install. Great quality.

No better off then i was with the old breaks still dont slow tow vehicle (2013 f250) barely tell if there are breaks. 2012 stacker trailer 35' 7000 lb triple axle trailer.

You mentioned that the brakes are not slowing trailer and I have a few questions that I would like to ask. Have you had a chance to check the wiring on the trailer? What brake controller are you using?

Customer service at etrailer is always the best

The part # 23-464-465 that you referenced actually is both of these assemblies kitted together.

Dexter and Hayes/Al-Ko make quality brakes and one isn't necessarily better than the other. The Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-464-465 referenced in your question are 12 inch brake assemblies designed for 7,000 pound axles. Based on my research, the total weight of your Layton Skyline Camper should be between 4,700 and 5,700 pounds, depending on the exact model you have. As long as your 5000lb axle uses 12" x 2" brakes like a typical 5200-7000lb axle then the stronger 7000lb brake assemblies will fit just fine. They will provide stronger braking, but that is not necessarily better. If you can adjust your trailer brake controller to the point that it locks up the wheels with your current brakes, you won't see any gains with the stronger brakes. Most likely yes since the Dexter brake assemblies part number # 23-464-465 are designed to fit standard 7K trailer axles like you'd have but it wouldn't hurt to check first. Take of a hub drum and measure the inside diameter and width. If it's 12 inch by 2 inch and the assembly is held to the brake flange with a 5 bolt pattern then this kit is the correct fit for it. I also attached a review video for these assemblies and a link to a page on adding brakes to a trailer you might find helpful.
