The unique free-backing design, patented by DICO, lets your trailer move in reverse without actuating the brakes. When you begin backing up, the brake shoes are firm against the drum, as in a braking situation. As you continue in reverse, however, the shoes turn with the drum until the lining pressure is released and you are able to back up freely.

These brakes are designed to eliminate friction between the shoes and drum when you are driving in reverse. A trailer breakaway kit will not be effective should your trailer disconnect from your tow vehicle when backing up.

Everything installed easily. I have had the trailer in and out of both fresh water and salt water a number of times now and everything is working perfectly. Both the brakes and hubs are working well. etrailer was very helpful with finding the correct product and for providing torque specifications for the install. The only negative comment is that one of the four brake kits had damage to a brake pad. The damage was caused from brake assemblies bumping into each other in the box. The box could have been packed more securely. However, etrailer was very good about replacing the brake assembly and getting the replacement shipped quickly.

I rebuilt an old boat trailer that has been sitting outside for 10 years. It was in really bad shape & I could not read any of the bearing numbers, all had had was the dimension of the hub & the old bearings. Stacey A. at etrailer was very helpful in getting the right parts I needed & best of all when I got my parts they all fit. The brake kit was great just bolt them on. Very quick shipping & great service.

Thanks

Brakes work fine. Got freebacking so i can easily back the boat trailer up without dealing with the brakes locking up. Long story short the freebacking doesnt work worth a crap and i shouldve gone non freebacking and saved the money

by:

Great brake set up. Are used them on a tandem axle galvanize trailer that sees a lot of salt water. I installed a freshwater rinse but realistic you’ll get five years out of them if you use it as often as I do. Cheap insurance for stopping a 8000 pound trailer and boat.

by:

Fit perfect and worked well.

by:

Working great, tested them again today when my 30' proline was a bit short of being full up. Drove about 5 mph, hit the breaks hard, and these brakes (surge) locked the tires up as expected, and bumped the boat forward just enough. Everything I've received from Etrailer has worked as expected.

by:

Chris was very knowledgeable about the products that I was looking for and made sure I had everything I needed to get my trailer brakes back working.

See what our Experts say about this Dexter Trailer Brakes

  • What's the Difference Between etrailer AKFBBRK-7-D and Dexter T4489600-500 Hydraulic Drum Brakes?
The main difference is brand. The # T4489600-500 is Made by Dexter here in the USA, while the # AKFBBRK-7-D is made by etrailer overseas. Both will work with the same hubs, and the same axles. Dexter also uses the Galphorite coating on those brakes which has a slightly higher salt-spray rating compared to the dacromet our brakes use, but its not really a noticable difference, as if you're actually going in salt water you should be going with galvanized brakes.

  • What Type of Brake Fluid Should Be Used with the 12" Titan Hydraulic Brake Kit
The brake fluid specifications for the surge brake system usually comes from the actuator but we can only recommend using DOT (Usually 3/4) fluid with the Titan Hydraulic Brake Kit part # T4489600-500 as outlined my the manufacturer.

  • Does Titan Hydraulic Brake Kit # T4489600-500 Come with Hubs/Drums
The Titan Hydraulic Brake Kit # T4489600-500 that you referenced does not come with hub/drums. Since this is a 6k axle brake kit the correct hub/drum you'd need is the Dexter part # 8-201-9UC3-EZ which would fit the same spindle as what the Titan brake kit you mentioned would have been designed for.

  • Is It Better To Replace 12 x 2 Trailer Brake Shoes Or Replace The Entire Assembly?
The difference between the Titan Replacement Brake Shoes # T4798400 and # T4807700 is which brake assemblies the kits fit on. The # T4798400 fits brake assemblies # T4489600-500 where the # T4807700 fits discontinued braking assemblies T4203000. Both of the kits are per wheel and in general there is not a large cost difference between the replacement shoes and complete replacement braking assemblies. Due to that we recommend going ahead and replacing the entire braking assemblies using...

  • Are 12 x 2 Titan Hydraulic Brakes Replacements for DICO 12 x 2 Hydraulic Brakes
The free backing Titan Hydraulic Brake Kit # T4489600-500 are indeed a replacement for DICO brakes that measure 12" x 2" so they will work for you. You just need to make sure you need a capacity for a 6,000 lb axle and have a 5-bolt mounting flange. To mount these brakes you will need the Mounting Bolts and Hardware # BRKH12. I have added a link to a video review for you to check out as well of the Titan Hydraulic Brake Kit # T4489600-500.

  • Parts Needed To Replace Hydraulic Braking System On Boat Trailer
Hydraulic systems are preferred on boat trailers because water and electricity do not mix well. The hydraulic surge brake system is self contained on the trailer and the only connection to the vehicle is the reverse lockout switch that is powered through the trailer connector. This switch keeps the surge coupler from locking the brakes on the trailer when you are backing up. I know that you told me that your boat weighs 6k, however I need your help to identify the axle so we can select...

  • Replacement Brake Assemblies, Actuator and Brake Line for 1994 Ramlin Boat Trailer
Based on what you listed the correct brake assemblies you'd want is the part # T4489600-500 which is a kit for the left and right hand side assemblies you need. For a actuator the Demco drum actuator part # DM72VR would be a really great option. It has a 7k trailer capacity, fits a 2 inch ball, and has the easiest and most reliable coupler mechanism as well. Then for a single axle brake line kit the Kodiak kit part # 18SI-BLKIT would work great. It's all flexible hose which is the easiest...

  • Installation of Replacement Brake Assemblies on 2006 Karavan Boat Trailer for a Bayliner 185
There really arent any tricks to installing hydraulic brake assemblies like the Titan Free-Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assemblies # T4489600-500. As long as this is the correct assembly for your setup you would just need to bolt it in place and then attach the brake line to the back of the assembly and then bleed the brakes and you would be ready to go. To bleed the brakes you will need to first top off the master cylinder with appropriate fluid. Next you will want to pump the fluid...
