If you tow a boat trailer, live in a coastal area, or experience a lot of snow, slush, and salt on the roads, you know how corrosive salt and water can be. Because disc brakes last longer than drum brakes, you should consider how things like rust might impact your trailer over time.
The Dacromet coating on these brakes offers great corrosion protection, even with frequent use in freshwater and saltwater. It can withstand 300 to 400 hours of continual exposure to salt spray before corrosion begins, which is comparable to galvanized steel. So - unless you're driving your trailer through water for 2 weeks straight with no chance for the brakes to dry - it'll be a while before any rust starts to form.
Say goodbye to the days of your truck being pushed and pulled by your trailer. Disc brakes provide a safer, more comfortable ride than drum brakes. They offer shorter stopping distances and deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds. So, you won't have to worry about things crashing around in your trailer or camper next time you reach unexpected traffic on the highway or debate if you can actually stop before that yellow light turns red.
More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.
Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.
The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. The caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.
This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.
In addition, vented rotors, like these, disperse heat faster than non-vented rotors. When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. So even if you take your boat or camper out every weekend, these trailer brakes will continue to offer excellent performance throughout their long life.
Kodiak disc brakes have a unique caliper mounting bracket as well. The side-support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.
If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.
For example on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.
And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Kodiak 13 inch hub and rotor disc brake assembly set. This set is going to allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes so that you can take advantage of the superior performance that comes along with having disc brakes on your trailer. Or if you already have disc brakes on your trailer and you're looking for a higher quality finish these do have the dichromate finish on them so they are gonna be a great upgrade for you as well. Having the two brake assemblies is going to be enough to upgrade a single, 7,000 pound capacity axle with the number 42 spindles. Our rotors are 13 inches in diameter and, as you can see, we have eight of these nine-sixteenths inch diameter wheel bolts in the eight on six-and-a-half-inch bolt pattern.
So these are gonna work for your wheels that are 16 inches and larger. We do have the dichromate finish on the hub and rotor assemblies as well as on our calipers and our caliper mounting brackets. And that's going to offer excellent rust and corrosion resistance for your assemblies. It's going to have a 300-to-400-hour salt spray rating. So these are gonna work really well for your boat trailers or trailers that are used in coastal areas or on heavily treated roads.
Anywhere where they're gonna come in contact with a lot of salt or corrosive materials frequently. So if you're looking at your good, better, best kind of scenario, your best option is definitely going to be a stainless steel construction. But that's gonna come with a premium price. So if you're wanting a little bit less than that premium price and still having great protection, this is gonna be the way to go. Your dichromate is gonna be the the second best option in that line, and it's gonna do a really good job for you for a better price.
So if you are looking to upgrade from your standard disc brakes to these, I think you'll be very happy with them. If you're going from drum brakes to disc brakes you're gonna notice a huge improvement in your trailers braking. These do have ceramic brake pads that are going to increase your stopping power. They also have a large, two-and-a-half-inch diameter, stainless steel piston that provides fast, responsive braking. So these are going to offer a dramatically-shorter stopping distance.
They're also gonna provide a smoother, more controlled breaking experience for you. So it's gonna help keep your trailer from pushing and pulling like you're probably used to with your drum brakes. So definitely a major improvement in the performance. And they're also going to be less maintenance so it's gonna help save you time and money. So having the one piece hub and rotor assembly does reduce the chance of uneven rotor wear. Here on the side you can see we do have this vented design that's gonna help dissipate heat faster, so it's gonna help prevent premature brake pad wear. Now your brake pads will wear down over time. You will have to change those out, but it's a pretty straightforward process and those are really the only only components that you have to worry about changing out. It's not like your drum brakes that have the springs and all those other small components that could potentially fail on you. So these are gonna do a good job, last you a nice long time. They are a nice high-quality, automotive-grade construction so they are gonna hold up well for you. The one caveat, if you are upgrading from drum brakes to disc brakes, is that disc brakes do require a higher line pressure than your drum brakes. So you're gonna need to make sure that you've got a hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines that are rated for 1500 psi or higher in order to properly activate your disc brakes. And if your trailer is set up for drum brakes it's pretty unlikely that your brake lines and actuator are compatible. So it is gonna take some doing to convert everything over but I think it is gonna be well worth it for you if you don't already have a hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines that are rated for that 1500 psi, we do have them available here at etrailer.com. Obviously they're not included in this kit so this isn't gonna be everything that you need but it is going to give you the two dichromate-plated cast iron hub and rotor assemblies with the eight pre-installed nine-sixteenth-inch diameter wheel bolts on each. You'll also get 16 of these nine-sixteenths-inch diameter, zinc-plated steel lug nuts and that will help keep your wheel in place. You've got the two dichromate-plated, cast iron calipers as well as the two dichromate-plated ductile iron caliper mounting brackets. As you can see, these have the five-bolt brake flange configuration so it is gonna be very simple to put these on your axle. I do wanna point out that I've got these mounted on top just for balance here in my display, but when you actually go to install these they're gonna be mounted on the side. That side support design puts all the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on your bolts so it helps your bolts last longer. You are gonna get four of these stainless steel caliper mounting bolts as well. So two for each side. We've got our inner and our outer races pre-installed. Those are going to allow us to install our inner and our outer bearings in place to make sure that everything is rotating smoothly for us. This system is lubricated with oil so we've got our two oil seals for the inside and then our two oil caps that will screw in place there. We're also going to get one eight-ounce bottle of synthetic bearing oil to make sure that everything stays lubricated and moving around properly as it should. So again, whether you are wanting to upgrade from drum brakes to disc brakes, or if you've already got those disc brakes and you're wanting that higher quality dichromate finish, these are gonna be a great upgrade for you. That completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

Delivery was fast and on time As promised all the products and items that they said were coming with it showed up. The quality looks good and as advertised. I have not installed it yet once installed. I will review and give update.
I contacted etrailer to get their opinion on what components should be used to upgrade the brakes, hubs and wheels on my fifth wheel camper. They provide a list of parts for me to chose. I elected to use oil bath bearings and disc brakes. I purchase most of the parts from etrailer. The hubs and rotors were delivered in 4 boxes, unfortunately one of the boxes was destroyed and was returned. I contacted etrailer the next day and they immediately sent out the replacement parts. The installation was straight forward and took about 10 hours in my driveway. The one setback was that the mounting bolts for the drum backing plate were too short to mount the caliper brackets. The brake controller in the truck is a Prodigy 3 and works flawlessly with the electric over hydraulic brake actuator. The new disc brakes are a huge improvement over the drum brakes. If you are contemplating on whether to change your brakes from drum to disc. DO IT NOW! Thanks etrailer

I really like what I purchased. The system is really good and my trailer stops on a diamond gives 9 cents back, this is the way to go on any big trailer. Disks are amazing. No heat way better breaking, less maintenance. You know, the other thing? I did was upgraded My hubs to oil bath, which is another brilliant thing, again less maintenance. Better for the trailer, very impressed. The only negative thing I can say is that the seals for the oil bath are subpare and leaked after only 10 miles then 59 miles, so I had to go to a different manufacture and company and found a very robust seal that worked because the 2 times that yours failed that came from e trailer wasnt good. This is one problem. I think that they need to address and fix the other one. Is the caliper mounting bracket? When you put it on to the existing bolts on the spindle. The factory bolts are not long enough and I think that they should be changed. To a longer one so that you have according to engineering standards API three Threads showing when the nut is Torqued, you cant do it because the caliper mountain bracket is so thick and the bolts arent long enough. I Needed to change those bolts to longer bolt so that you can do this properly and have 3 threads showing past the nut When its torque down. Other than these 2 problems, everything seem to work very well and Im pleased.I have no other issues or concerns Prices were fair.Product came quick and Im real happy. So Far no other complaints for concerns.
