Video Transcript for Redline Trailer Brakes - Electric Drum Brakes - 185100-150 Review

Today we're gonna take a look at the Hayes/AL-KO 12-inch electric trailer brake kit with the left-hand and right-hand brake assemblies for 7,000-pound axles. Now, electric brakes, they're easier to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. Basically, they require only an electric brake controller, which we do sell separately on our website. There's no actuator or hydraulic lines necessary with electric brakes. Now, these brake assemblies are manual adjustment brakes. You can see right down here is the adjustment gears, so you do have to periodic manually adjust them.

Now, this part does include both the left-hand driver's side, right-hand passenger's side brake assemblies. And as you can see, the mounting hardware, the bolts and the nuts, are all included to install these. A few specs on this. The dimensions is 12-inch diameter by two inches wide. And where those are measured, the diameter would be measured from this shoe, all the way across to this shoe. So there's your 12-inch diameter, and the width would be the width of the pad on the brake shoe.

So if we put the ruler on, there's your two-inch wide. And if you notice, there's the five holes in the backing plate here, so it does use the five-bolt brake mounting flange bolt pattern. Now this does require the use of 12-inch brake drums. The wheel size that'll fit on these brakes is 14-and-a-half-inch, 15-inch, and 16-inch wheels. The axles they're rated for are 7,000 pound axles. And these are electric brakes, so if you notice in the back, there'll be two green wires coming out that need to be connected.

One goes to the brake feed. The other goes to a good clean ground, and they're both green wires, so either wire can be used for either function. Now the last thing I want to show you is how to tell the difference between these left-hand driver's side and right-hand passenger side. Now, on a new assembly, of course, there'll be stickers on it that'll tell you that, but if the sticker wasn't there, the easiest way to tell is look at the length of the pad on the brake shoe. This pad goes from here to here; this one just goes from here to here, so this is the shorter pad. The shorter pad is always your primary shoe, and it'll face the front of the trailer.

So that's gonna tell you this is for the left-hand driver's side, and if you look at the other one, the pad goes from here to here, and this one just goes here to here. Again, this is a shorter pad, which is the primary shoe, faces the front, so that tells you this is the right-hand passenger side assembly. But that should do it for the review on the Hayes/AL-KO 12-Inch electric trailer brake kit with left-hand and right-hand brake assemblies for 7,000-pound axles.

I ordered 4 break kits for our 1999 5th wheel that I was not blue to find at any dealership, it would’ve required me to replace both axels. I’m great dil that I was able to find the replacement parts that I needed. They were shipped and delivered faster than I had anticipated. And they arrived an great/perfect condition.

I want to thank you etrailer for their Quick Service and professional courtesy.

  • Do the Hubs/Drums Need Changed When Replacing the Braking Assemblies
To summarize, you have 12" x 2" Hayes Braking Assemblies with round magnets. If the magnets have failed then you would need to replace the entire braking assemblies as they no longer offer these magnets as replacement parts. Therefore, I recommend the Hayes/AL-KO Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # 185100-150 which use a five bolt brake mounting flange. If the hub/drums that you have now are not out of round then you can reuse them with the Hayes/AL-KO Electric Trailer Brake Kit. You would...

  • Which Electric Brakes Will Give the Best Performance?
Dexter and Hayes/Al-Ko make quality brakes and one isn't necessarily better than the other. The majority of the time, the biggest factor in determining the life of a brake is going to be the load it is asked to help stop, the ruggedness of the ride, how often it is used and proper adjustment. Brakes that are self-adjusting such as the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-464-465 are popular because adjustments are made automatically and enhance the brake's performance - and...

Once you have your new Hayes/AL-KO Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 185100-150 installed you want to adjust the brakes. The process involves tightening the brakes until they become difficult to turn and then backing them off 10 clicks. As everyone will have a different definition...
