Quick Tip: There's really not a whole lot to getting new drum brakes. If you've confirmed that all of the specs listed above line up with what you need for your trailer, you can be pretty sure these will work for you.
The pads on these trailer brakes are made of the same friction material that you might find on a car's drum brakes. In fact, the material is SAE-N certified. So, not only does it provide high-performance braking, but it's environmentally friendly, too! With these brakes, your trailer will be good to go on any road throughout the United States and Canada.
The superior quality of these pads is also due to the fact that they're bonded to the shoes, not just nailed down. Riveted brake pads will always give you a screeching reminder to replace your brake shoes. That's because the rivets will scrape against your drum as the friction material wears down. You won't have that noisy problem with bonded brake pads. You'll also get a little more friction pad contact because there aren't any cutouts for rivets. And more friction means more stopping power.
These pads are also tapered, which should help to prevent any broken, crumbly bits of material from rotating inside the drum as the pads wear over time. Brakes without these tapers are more likely to create a jarring braking experience that could cause the brakes to stutter and lock up.
The more miles you put on your trailer, the more your brake pads will wear down. As they lose contact with the drum, stopping distances get longer and longer. To keep your brakes working great, it's important to adjust them pretty routinely. For this job, grab a floor jack and either a brake adjustment tool (sold separately) or just a standard flathead screwdriver.
Jack up your trailer enough to get the wheel(s) off the ground. Remove the adjuster plugs from the backing plate on the brake, and insert the flat end of the tool through the back of the assembly.
Push in on the star gear and lift it up. Keep doing this until the brake pads catch on your drum. When you can't spin your wheel by hand anymore, back the gear off by about 10 clicks by pushing down on the star gear. Does the wheel now spin freely (even if it sounds like the brake pads drag slightly on the drum)? Great! Then you're all done with that one and ready to adjust the rest.
These brake assemblies meet the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. These brake assemblies underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. These brakes have also been tested by QAI for braking performance under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday tower.
After you get these brakes installed and adjusted, you'll need to break them in. First, find a long stretch of road or a big, empty parking lot. Once you're there, set your brake controller to its maximum setting and get moving. Speed up to about 40 mph and brake to slow to about 20 mph. Repeat this 15-30 times. The goal is to get the brake shoes and magnet properly seated into your drum. You'll know you've done that when it feels less jerky (and more consistent) each time you apply the brakes.
Note: The brakes will be very hot after doing this, so after every 10 stops you'll want to wait about 10 minutes to let the brakes cool off before continuing. If you don't, you might cook and crack the pad material.

Its been a year now and still working like a champ
Brakes were very poorly packaged and protected. One was damaged and I had to disassemble and reassemble. I read other reviews with the same complaints and was hoping it didn't happen to me but it did. A little bit of paper in the box doesn't keep it from getting damaged. Seems like the problem could simply be fixed so it doesn't happen to others.Oh well.

Awe man, I am sorry about that Scott. I have sent this over to shipping for them to do better in the future. Lets go ahead and get you a replacement that is not damaged sent out right away. Was it only the one or are both causing issues?
The grease seal on the axle of my Scamp 16 foot camper failed, coating left side brake shoes in grease causing lock-ups. I considered just replacing shoes, but for a few dollars more I ordered complete set with a CLEAN sensor (grease fouled as well). Entire system was easier to install than just replacing the pads. Four nuts, two sealing wire connectors and the brakes were done in about 15-20 minutes per side.
My dad and both grandfathers always said "Get Timkin parts, they are the best." The Timkin seals went in easily as well with a perfect fit
Ship in great shape but might want to put tie straps on to keep the brake shoes form moving other than that the brakes an assembly is great shape
the brakes arrived on time, and were as advertised.installation was uncomplicated, and after adjustment worked as they should.I did a 200 mile trip with my camper and checked the brakes for adjustment upon my return.the brakes did not need any more adjustment and have been working great ever since!
Needs better packaging. Opened the box and the brake shoes had shifted on both units. Will have to remove the springs and realign the shoes. Other than that, it appears okay.
Easiest way to assure consistent braking on my trailer.
One of the left backing plates and one of the right backing plates got messed up in shipping, I think I can repair them but I may be reaching out if I am unable to fix them. the arms that old the magnet fell off and the shoes are not centered on plate
Went together very easily, brakes workd excellent round trip canada into mexico. Would highly reccomend them. Excellent price too. Thank you.

I ordered online Friday and received fenders, brakes, Jack and grease caps. Everything came in good shape and looks of good quality. I will order again
Excellent products delivered. Brakes and grease is good quality
Product is fine, but they shipped it like crap. Stacked them brake pads together with no padding in between. Only packaging was some paper wrapped poorly around it all. I had to reassemble the units.

Brahes have been working perfect.I have used my trailer on steep windy mountain passes and the freeway witn on problems .
Originally ordered the wrong item. They accepted the return. Got the right item. Very happy with service and equipment
The Electric Trailer Brake Kit worked as advertised. With two thousand miles on the trailer I have excellent braking control. I did readjust the brakes after a few hundred miles and this improved the smoothness and braking control while driving through Arkansas backcountry roads.

The kit continues to perform perfectly
I expected etrailer to carry better quality products, that is why I stayed away from Amazon. However these brake assemblies are the exact same ones that one could get from Amazon (made in China). I will use these but will buy from Amazon next time.
Quick delivery. Only problem I have is that the brake shoes were disassembled and apart. Will have to reassemble the springs that came apart.
Absolutely great service. I have several trailers, and this will be my first stop for all my trailer needs. I would highly recommend this company to anyone. Highly trained staff very courteous and professional and helpful if you need a little guidance. Product was perfect. Replaced complete prepacked hub assembly and complete electric brake assembly. My trailer is same as new again. Thank you for your help. All my parts worked out great.

Great
I received the left side but no right side. Sucks when you're waiting for good weather to do the job and you can't even get started because you're missing parts from your order. Box was intact with those heavy staples.

I see that we missed the mark on this one. Customer Service will contact you ASAP to have the missing brake sent out to you.
The staff at etrailer.com helped me choose the correct brake/axle parts and I received them promptly. After using the trailer brakes extensively for the last year, including a trip to southern Baja, I checked the bearings, seals, and brakes and found them all functioning properly and well within wear limits. I will buy from them again!
the delivery was on time and the product As mentioned in other reviews the packaging could have been better some of the pieces such as the adjuster had come apart during shipping. nothing was missing or broken just had to be put back together.
One assembly came with the bottom spring missing.
