Manual-Adjust Brakes

With repeated use of these brake assemblies, the brake shoes may move out of alignment, causing less efficient braking performance. To keep the brake shoes aligned and the brake assemblies performing correctly, you should perform routine maintenance.

These brake assemblies should be adjusted after installation and then as needed for the life of the brakes. To adjust the brakes, use a brake adjustment screw tool (sold separately) to turn the adjustment gear on the inside of the assemblies. Continue to turn the gear until the drum surrounding the brake catches on the brake pads enough so that the hub can no longer be turned easily by hand. Then reverse the gear by about 10 clicks. A properly adjusted brake should drag slightly on the brake drum.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

These brake assemblies meet the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. These brake assemblies underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. These brakes have also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on these brake assemblies is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. The friction material is fully bonded onto the surface of the brake shoe. This lining is custom-molded for a perfect fit. The edges are tapered to ensure long-lasting performance. This taper, along with the circular grinding that the lining undergoes, helps to prevent cracking and crumbling. The Electric Trailer Brake Kit worked as advertised. With two thousand miles on the trailer I have excellent braking control. I did readjust the brakes after a few hundred miles and this improved the smoothness and braking control while driving through Arkansas backcountry roads.

Great experience, got my parts in just a few days, got them put on my R.V.a few days later. Everything worked great however I don't have that camper anymore, traded it in on a new one a few weeks ago, but at the end of the day etrailer is a great place to shop for R.V. parts & you get great service as well. A trailer is the place to go for everything you need. I got my electric brake backing plate with pads fully assembled with electric control magnet couldn’t ask for anything better for a great price I also had to buy a drum which was also a great price I refer everybody to eat trailer


I ordered brakes for my utility trailer. I have not ordered anything from etrailer in a few years but George spotted my order and upgraded delivery to expedite based on my pervious orders. Beyond the quality of their parts, the quality of their people make this my go to place. Best prices are just gravy on the biscuit.


The price was great and the product seems good. I was surprised that the nuts to the flange bolts were not included. It was no big deal for me as I used the nuts off of the old ones. It would be a problem if it were installed where the old parts were not available.


Worked great to turn a old hydraulic drum brake to an electric brake system on an old boat trailer that was converted to an ATV trailer. I’ve had them on for over a year now with about 2000 miles on the conversion, everything is great. Good stopping power and they install was easy. etrailer helped me measure to get the correct drum and bearing since they were an oddball size.

These are still great after a year of use. I have used this trailer on at least 6 trips of 200 miles or more hauling ATVs and no problems at all.

this was the easiest replacement of brakes I've ever done on a trailer and I've been a mechanic for over45 years price was very reasonable for both sides 69 dollars just unbolt the backing plates cut the wires for the electric brakes bolt on the new backing plates that are completely assembled reconnect the 2 wires put drums back on and your done.


It has been a year since the brakes were replaced and they are still working well. My only beef is a general trailer brake complaint, trying to adjust the shoes with the drum on is nearly impossible with a drop axle, the adjustment hole is right behind the upright for the axle. Installation was easy, equipment has held up well and was a good value. etrailer keeps providing excellent customer support. It is nice to deal with a company that has employees with great attitudes and who are knowledgeable about the products they sell. I'll be back when one of my other trailers needs repair.

So another year is gone and the brakes are still working well. We have been using the trailer a lot this year and no issues.

Brake adjuster was not assembled on the Ebrake assembly. I did have to take time to assembly this is why I give the order three stars. Received the order fast. Overall the product seems to be good quality. etrailer has great customer service.


Products were shipped in a timely manor and actually delivered quicker than planned. Packaging can be better planned for shipping, as most of the boxes were damaged but fortunately merchandise was unscaved.

Great replacement brakes. Perfect fit. Quick shipping. HOWEVER ... would it kill you to include a couple of extra nuts for the studs? They're an uncommon size (7/16-20) and the old ones on my trailer were so rusted I had to cut one off. Luckily, I have 40 years of collected hardware and I found ONE nut that would fit. Other than that, love the brakes.

Just got them installed, adjusted and took the trailer for a test spin and seem to be working fine. Products were shipped in a timely way, arrived in perfect condition; thanks to etrailer staff I was able to have some guidance on which products I needed for my application and I received all the correct parts. Installation was also made much easier thanks to videos and literature from etrailer. It's now been a year since I've installed these brake assemblies; as far as functionality is concerned, they seem to be braking effectively. The only issue I have is that they squeal like no tomorrow, mostly during low-speed braking. From what I've read this is often caused by dust gathering along the shoes, and could also be caused by glazing of the surface of the shoes from excessive heat. To be honest I'm a bit surprised though that they are squealing as much as they are, considering I've only put 1,000-1,500km on them. I will have to pull the drums off and have a look to see if I can blow out the dust and/or scuff up the shoes a bit to remove any glazing. Disappointed though because my old shoes which I replaced never squealed. Time will tell how they hold up in the long run, but for now it's 3/5

Other than the brake dust you mentioned, poor contact between the brake magnet and the armature surface of the brake drum can cause squealing. When brake assemblies are replaced, the armature surface of the drum should be closely examined for grooves, pitting or discoloration. Any of these can prevent good contact between the magnet and the drum. Even if the drums and assemblies are replaced at the same time, its recommended that the trailer brakes be burnished-in. This can be done during a test drive by applying the brakes 20 to 30 times to decrease the speed by 20 mph. For example, once reaching 40 mph use the manual override to slow down to 20 mph. Once at 20 mph, release the manual override and travel about a mile to allow ample time for brakes to cool and repeat the process again. You will need to repeat this process 20 to 30 times. This allows the brake shoes and magnets to slightly wear-in to the drum surface.

I replaced all four brake assemblies on my 2000 cargo trailer. I've never done this before but it only took four hours including removal of the old brake assemblies and installing all four new ones. Anyone capable of using their brain should be able to do this easily!

Each brake assembly is going to need to have a pair of wires coming out of it, with both having ground wires that are attached to bare metal surfaces on your trailer frame.
