  • Electric brakes are easier to install and offer more user control than hydraulic brakes
    • Require only an electric brake controller (sold separately) - no actuator or hydraulic lines necessary
  • Automotive-grade friction material is molded to brake shoes
    • Pads are fully bonded - not riveted - to shoes for long life and more braking torque
    • Less chance of cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lockup, thanks to tapered edge and circular grinding
  • Periodic manual adjustment required
    • Fine-tooth brake adjustment gears allow for a more precise setting
  • Dacromet coating on backing plates offers superior corrosion resistance
  • Adjuster plugs (included) cover access holes to keep dirt and grime out of the assemblies and off of the shoes
  • Left-hand (driver's-side) brake assembly and right-hand (passenger's-side) brake assembly included
    • Mounting bolts and hardware (BRKH12) sold separately
  • QAI and CSA certified

Manual-Adjust Brakes

With repeated use of these brake assemblies, the brake shoes may move out of alignment, causing less efficient braking performance. To keep the brake shoes aligned and the brake assemblies performing correctly, you should perform routine maintenance.

These brake assemblies should be adjusted after installation and then as needed for the life of the brakes. To adjust the brakes, use a brake adjustment screw tool (sold separately) to turn the adjustment gear on the inside of the assemblies. Continue to turn the gear until the drum surrounding the brake catches on the brake pads enough so that the hub can no longer be turned easily by hand. Then reverse the gear by about 10 clicks. A properly adjusted brake should drag slightly on the brake drum.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

These brake assemblies meet the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. These brake assemblies underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. These brakes have also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on these brake assemblies is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. The friction material is fully bonded onto the surface of the brake shoe. This lining is custom-molded for a perfect fit. The edges are tapered to ensure long-lasting performance. This taper, along with the circular grinding that the lining undergoes, helps to prevent cracking and crumbling. This durability helps to prevent mechanical lockup, which can occur when brake shoes are excessively worn or broken.

The friction material is also SAE-N certified, which means that it is an environmentally safe product that complies with California and Washington regulations regarding the composition of brake pads. As a result, this material not only provides high-performance braking that can endure the test of time, but it is also environmentally friendly and safe for use throughout the United States and Canada.

I needed to upgrade my boat trailer from free-wheeling spindles to electric brakes because my new tow vehicle has a 5,000 pound tow rating only if the trailer has brakes. The brakes will be immersed only in fresh water but I chose the brake kit with Dacromet coating just to assure maximum protection from rust and corrosion. After removing the original spindles and cleaning the old grease from the axle I installed the new brake assemblies. They fit perfectly and seem to be of solid construction. Without the self adjusting mechanism it keeps these brakes assemblies very simple and making a manual adjustment periodically is no problem. I am pleased with the quality of this product.

These brake assemblies are working perfectly. After one year there is no rust or corrosion. Brake shoe wear is nominal. They require adjustment every 200 miles or so two round trips to the lake in order to maintain smooth operation.

After replacing the trailer brake (OEM) with these brakes I can tell a difference when braking. I'm now getting shorter braking distances with them and I feel safer using them. Thanks

After a year of service these brakes are still doing what they were made to do. Glad to have gotten them when I did.

Great personal service, staff has always been extremely helpful and patient with a do-it yourself’r like me!!

I was very pleased with the expert and friendly guidance that I received when purchasing the trailer brakes and suspension components. The staff was thorough in ensuring I had the correct components for the weight and use of my trailer.

Received my brakes and box was torn. Box was flimsy and not made to hold 4 sets of brakes. Need to work on better shipping methods. I hope they work

Oh my goodness! I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you to check to see if there was any damage to the brakes.

Real nice coating. Like the dacromet

The electric trailer brake assemblies appear to be well made and fit perfectly. Delivery was great and actually arrived a day earlier than expected, which helped me a lot. I was concerned about the packaging with the heavy items only wrapped in paper and loose in a large box. Fortunately, there did not appear to be any damage or missing parts. So far I am very happy with the brakes and hope the last a long time.

Parts fit perfect, seemed to be good quality working just fine for over a year now.

One backing plate brake assembly. had the adjuster laying in the box. There was no packing between the 4 backing plate assembleys. I am very dissapointed with the quality of your packaging. I will not buy again from etrailer!

Excellent pieces, Have had zero issues with 4 of them on my tandem axle boat trailer and they work the way they should. huge upgrade from the quirky surge brakes they replace.

Brad L.

Still working Great even with freshwater dunking.

Put these on both axels on my equipment trailer and they work perfectly after 1 year.

Replaced all the brakes on my horse trailer. product works fine with no problems. My only complaint is that when assembled no lubricant was applied to the points on the backing plate where the brake shoes rest. This required removing the brake shoes and remounting them before installing them.

Brakes arrived fast. A mechanic friend of mine installed the brakes. Tested the brakes a few days later and they seemed to work fine. After one camping trip I traded for a new 5th wheel so don't know how they are performing for the new owners. BUT I was happy for the short time I used them. Thanks etrailer.

I actually wanted the self adjusting brakes but they weren’t in stock. Needed them quickly so I got these since they were in stock. Shipping was very fast but one brake came missing the adjusting star nut. Thankfully, I was able to use one off one of the old brakes. Installation was easy as I’ve done this before on another RV. I will continue to shop here. Customer service is great and very helpful!

Got product quick and when they said it would be delivered. Called ot find out which side was left and right. Call was answered quickly and was got my answer.

I've used etrailer for many purchases over the years so nothing new there. Usually never have a problem with my orders, but this time there was an issue with backordered parts. I contacted etrailer via email and got a response very quickly from Tiffany J. She was so helpful with cancelling the backordered parts and then emailed back later telling me there were more items backordered but made suggestions to replace them with less expensive parts to get my order moving!! I thought that was super cool and helpful, saving me time and frustration. Shipped my order and got it a couple days later, well packaged and intact. Not to mention their prices and shipping is on par or better than other online retailers and others.Thank you etrailer and Tiffany J. for your help and great business ethics!

Parts arrived n a timely fashion and look to be correct for my application, (I have not installed them yet.

The packaging was completely torn up and looks to have been taped back up by UPS.
There was nothing inside the package with the backing plates to keep them from sliding around inside the box. there were slight scratches in the finish but nothing that would affect their performance.

I am only giving a 4 star rating due to the poor quality of packaging. If the product had been fragile I question as to whether it would have arrived undamaged...

Exactly what I needed. Required no modification for the Wells Cargo trailer I was working on.

Ordered my electric brake kit from etrailer and came in mail on time 3 days and I fit just like a glove great products and a great company I would recommend them to anyone thanks etrailer

The packaging was awful some dents and scrathes from poor packaging i hope they still work

Fit my 30-year old 5.2K Dexter axle perfectly.
to install and adjust.

  • Is Electric Trailer Brake Kit with Dacromet Coating AKEBRK-7-D Good for Saltwater Use
Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-7-D will be more suitable for saltwater applications that traditional brakes. This is because of the corrosion resistant properties of the dacromet coating. That puts them somewhere between stainless steel and galvanized steel. I recommend with these or any brakes you choose to rinse them off with fresh water once you are done for the day so as to prolong the life of the brakes and not run into the problem that you are having now.

  • Are Trailer Brake Assemblies Side-Specific
Brake assemblies are definitely side specific. If you put the wrong brake assembly on the wrong side of the trailer, the brakes won't work correctly, and could cause the trailer to jackknife. Brake Drums like the # AKHD-655-6-G-K you'd mentioned aren't side specific. For the # AKHD-655-6-G-K brake drums you'd asked about, for electric brakes I'd recommend the # AKEBRK-7-SA self adjusting brake assemblies. There's plenty of new boat trailer manufacturer's using electric brakes on boat trailers, so you can absolutely do it, but there are a few key things.
