Manual-Adjust Brakes

With repeated use of these brake assemblies, the brake shoes may move out of alignment, causing less efficient braking performance. To keep the brake shoes aligned and the brake assemblies performing correctly, you should perform routine maintenance.

These brake assemblies should be adjusted after installation and then as needed for the life of the brakes. To adjust the brakes, use a brake adjustment screw tool (sold separately) to turn the adjustment gear on the inside of the assemblies. Continue to turn the gear until the drum surrounding the brake catches on the brake pads enough so that the hub can no longer be turned easily by hand. Then reverse the gear by about 10 clicks. A properly adjusted brake should drag slightly on the brake drum.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

These brake assemblies meet the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. These brake assemblies underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. These brakes have also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on these brake assemblies is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. The friction material is fully bonded onto the surface of the brake shoe. This lining is custom-molded for a perfect fit. The edges are tapered to ensure long-lasting performance. This taper, along with the circular grinding that the lining undergoes, helps to prevent cracking and crumbling. This durability helps to prevent mechanical lockup, which can occur when brake shoes are excessively worn or broken.

The friction material is also SAE-N certified, which means that it is an environmentally safe product that complies with California and Washington regulations regarding the composition of brake pads. As a result, this material not only provides high-performance braking that can endure the test of time, but it is also environmentally friendly and safe for use throughout the United States and Canada.

Video Transcript for What to Know About the etrailer Electric Trailer Brakes

Today, we're going to take a look at the 12-inch electric trailer brake assembly kit. It includes the left and right hand brake assemblies, and it fits 5200 pound to 7000 pound axles. These are electric brakes, they're a lot easier to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. They require only an electric brake controller that we do sell separately on our website, so there's no actuator or hydraulic lines necessary. On the pads, they use an automotive-grade friction material, which is molded to the brake shoes, and since they're fully bonded, they're not riveted to the shoes, they give you a lot longer life, more braking torque 00:00:30. Also on these, they have a tapered edge on the pad itself, and they do a circular grinding of the pad, which gives you less chance of cracking and crumbling that could lead to a mechanical lockup. Now, these are manual adjustment brakes, so they do require periodic manual adjustment. At the very bottom here where you adjust them, they do use a fine-tooth brake adjustment here, which allows for a more precise setting, and there's no brake interior that's needed following your initial adjustment.

Now, on these, you can notice they do use a e-coded backing plate, helps resist wear and corrosion. Does come with the adjuster plugs. That's a nice cover that covers the access hole, to keep any dirt or grime out of the assemblies and off of the shoes. Now, this kit does include both the left-hand driver's side assembly and the right-hand passenger side assembly. It includes the mounting hardware, which is a 3/8 inch size mounting hardware. It's a total of 10 bolts, 10 lock washers, and 10 nuts to install it onto your brake mounting flange.

Now, these brakes do meet the QAI and CSA certification. These are electric brakes, so they do require, there's two wires on the back of them. They do need to be connected. One goes to a good clean ground, the other goes to the brake feed for power, and are both black wire, so it doesn't matter, either wire for either function, whichever one you want to hook up. A few specs on this, the application. This will fit most standard hub and drum assemblies, including Dexter Lip-pert 00:01:49 NowCoat. The size on these are 12 inch by two inch, and where that measurement comes from, the 12-inch is the diameter, measured from this end of the pad to this.

All the way across, there's your 12 inches. The two inches is the width of the pad itself, so if we put a ruler on that, there's your two inches, so 12 inches by two inches. This assembly does use a five-bolt mounting flange bolt pattern, so when this goes to install on your axle, the mounting flange on the axle does have to have a five-bolt pattern. These are designed to fit on axles that are rated 5200 pounds, 6000 pounds, and 7000 pounds, and one last thing is, these are left hand and right hand. The way to tell them apart, when you get them brand new, they'll usually have a sticker that'll say left hand and right hand, but if the sticker wasn't on there, the easiest way to tell is just look at the length of the pad on the shoe. So here, the pad goes from here to here, and this pad is all the way from here to here. This is a longer pad, this is a shorter pad.

The shorter pad is the primary pad, the primary shoe. That'll always fit toward the front of the trailer, so that'll dictate that this is a left-hand side or driver's side assembly. On this one, it's the same way. This shoe goes here to here. This one is all the way here to here. This is a shorter shoe, the primary shoe. Faces the front of the trailer, that'll mean that's the right-hand passenger side assembly. That should do it for the review on the 12-inch electric trailer brake assembly kit with left and right hand brake assemblies for 5200 pound to 7000 pound axles.

by:

Good brakes for the price one shoe had a small chunk out of lining but used didn’t think if was worth sending back. If not for that would have been a 5.
Very good company to deal with

Simple to install. Exact replacement for my 5000 lb empty 1995 sundowner horse trailer. Powerful. Plenty of pad left after a yr. Ttuck stips better with the trailer in tow!

by:

Works well. Never had a problem

by:

34 ft Airstream, replaced all six brakes as shown. Product performs as designed. I am totally unhappy with the way the trailer stops. What I am describing is not the item's fault. I am shortly going to purchase a complete Kodiak disc brake set-up from etrailer. The point of my story here is that...don't waste your money on the replacing old & inadequate technology with the same. These electric drum brake set-ups stop only with one shoe...the other shoe is there to stop when backing up. The stopping distance with disc brake is said to improve by 75%!

by:

Perfect, complete plate makes it quick and easy!

by:

STILL WAITING FOR DELIVERY

Great fit great looks quality tbd, One bummer made in China stamp on back. Etrailer shipping tracking and price100% good.

by:

These brakes are excellent. I have had zero issues with them since the day they were installed.

NOTE: On average I haul around 8K lbs and also not often so take my review with a grain of salt. Sometimes the load is heavy (a front end loader) and other times it's not (trash run). Either scenario, no issues. A quick gain adjustment and brake check and I'm gone. I checked the bearing play after a week or so and around the 8 month mark. Both times were A+. I think I'm 17 months into ownership. They're still working flawlessly.

When new, these drums had little OOR (out-of-round) which surprised me. Most drums have some sort of noticeable OOR. These no so much. My trailer stops quietly and effortlessly now. No pulsation, skipping, tugging, etc.

Would I buy these again? ABSOLUTELY!!

by:

Both of these assemblies were easy to install and worked very well. Great products and service.

by:

Was not packaged properly and came in damaged almost unusable had to repair I don’t understand why etrailer needs to add some serious help in the shipping department not just throw things in a box and ship it or use the MFG box and not tape them

by:

Brake assembly was just what I ordered. Quality is good and installed with no problems. Etrailer shipped right away received within a few days. Great product, great service.

by:

Work just like you'd hoped they would, and at a good price. Made finding parts easy.

by:

Once again good quality. Electric brakes parts. You have a electric brakes trailer. These are the ones to get.

by:
