Dexter Trailer Breakaway Kit - 34-285

  • Kit with Charger
  • Single-axle
  • Tandem-axle
  • Top Load
  • Dexter

Use with your Dexter electric-over-hydraulic brake actuator to bring your single- or tandem-axle trailer to a stop should it become disconnected from your tow vehicle. System includes charger that maintains battery.

Features:

  • Makes sure your trailer safely stops if it ever separates from your vehicle
    • When the pin gets pulled from the switch, a signal is shot back to your trailer brakes to activate
    • Designed for use with Dexter electric-over-hydraulic brake actuators (K71-650 and K71-651)
  • Automatically charges battery with the built-in charger when connected to your vehicle
    • Won't overcharge the battery
  • Mounts to the inside of your trailer's frame or camper compartment
    • Top-loading case provides easy access to battery from above
  • Breakaway switch installs on your trailer's frame with self-tapping screws (sold separately)
  • Protects battery from rain and debris with durable, plastic case
    • Lid can be secured with padlock (sold separately) to deter battery theft
  • Includes battery, charger, battery box, breakaway switch, wiring, and breakaway cable
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) compliant
  • Made in the USA

Specs:

  • Application: single- and tandem-axle trailers
  • Battery:
    • Voltage: 12V
    • Type: sealed lead acid
    • Capacity: 9 amp-hours
  • Breakaway cable length: 46"
  • Breakaway switch dimensions: 3" long x 1-1/2" wide
  • Breakaway switch lead wire length: 45"
  • Charger lead wire length: 14"
  • Battery box dimensions: 6-5/16" long x 3-3/4" wide x 5-3/4" tall
    • Battery box mounting hole spacing:
      • From center-to-center vertically: 3"
      • From center-to-center horizontally: 7"

Note: A breakaway system is required by law in most states for trailers that are equipped with electric brakes and have a GTW of at least 3,000 lbs.

Quick Tips:

  • When you store your trailer, be sure to keep the pin plugged into the breakaway switch. If the pin's removed for an extended period of time, dirt and moisture can get into the switch and cause corrosion that could keep it from activating when you need it.
  • A breakaway system needs to be able to apply the trailer brakes fully for at least 15 minutes. In general, the heavier your trailer, the higher amperage battery you'll need for the breakaway.

I used this unit to pair with the Dexter DX Series Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator, as it directly called for a 9mAh backup. This unit works as advertised, and the switch and wiring were easily identified and match the directions that come with the Dexter unit. The only reason I give this unit 4 stars instead of 5 is that it doesn't come with a battery charge indicator, which nearly every other 5mAh unit does. It would be really nice to be able to check the charge of the battery, without having to activate the emergency pull. Just a personal preference, but seems like a missing feature since all the 5mAh options have it.

by:

The five stars are for etrailer service and shipping. My dexter k71-651 e/h controller and the dexter breakaway 34-285 were well packaged and great shipping lables. A phone call after my online order to confirm mailing address and follow-up e-mail my parcel was on its way. UPS tracking ,my SCC parcel pick-up in port huron michigan and my son crossing the borderI had my parts within 48hrs (duty paid). I would like to follow-up with photos of my installation. The dexter E/H controller and breakaway switch is replacing an vacumm / hydraulic disc brakes on in my yard NEW 1977 31ft airstream trailer, This trailer is replacing my 78 airstream that was gutted by fire with a auto parts store solar panel battery maintaining system. Thats another story. THANKS ALL

  • Can I Use the Dexter DX Brake Actuator To Convert Drum Brake to EOH On Triple Axle Trailer
The Dexter DX Series Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator for Drum Brakes part # K71-650 will work well to actuate your drum brakes on the triple axle trailer when you switch over to electric over hydraulic brakes. You will also need a brake line kit. The longest brake line kit we have available is HydraStar Hydraulic Brake Line Kit - Triple Axle - 25' Long, 3/16" Main Line part # HS496-253. I do not believe this line kit will be long enough but I do not know how far back your axle. If...

  • Break Away System Recommendation for 4 Axle Trailer
I don't offer a breakaway system that's compatible with a 4 axle trailer that provides the test lamp function, but we do offer a breakaway system that would be compatible. The Tekonsha # 2028 Shur-Set III will work on trailers with 1-4 axles. The kit includes a battery charger that's tied into the 12-v feed from the trailer connector, so it'll keep the battery topped off at all times as you're towing.

  • Recommendation of Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator For 6,000-Lb Tandem Axle Trailer with Disc Brakes
For an electric over hydraulic brake actuator for your 6,000-lb tandem axle boat trailer with disc brakes, I have the Dexter Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator, part # K71-651, that you have referenced and the Carlisle HydraStar Electric-Hydraulic Actuator, part # HBA16. They will both require a breakaway kit like the Dexter Breakaway Kit, part # 34-285, or the Carlisle Breakaway Kit, part # HBA-EBA. The breakaway kit is required to apply the trailer brakes should the trailer become...

  • Can Dexter Breakaway Kit for Electric Over Hydraulic Actuators be Used with Regular Electric Brakes
Not to worry because you can use breakaway kit # 34-285 with regular electric brakes too. I called Dexter and they confirmed this. So you are good to go you would just omit the electric over hydraulic actuator part of the diagram for installation.

  • HydraStar Actuator Breakaway Kit Option
If you wanted to order the HydraStar # HBA16 with a breakaway kit you would instead want the part # HS381-9067 which also comes with wiring and a junction box. Otherwise the breakaway battery part # 34-285 would work well as it has more than the needed amp rating.

  • What is the Purpose of the Black Connection on the Dexter Trailer Breakaway Kit # 34-285
The black piece on the Dexter Trailer Breakaway Kit # 34-285 is simply a place where the power wires connect to. It is more of a housing than a connection point really. This kit can be used with trailers that just have electric brakes and not electric-over-hydraulic. If you check out the attached photo you can see how this will install.

You'll also need an electric over hydraulic brake actuator, a brake line kit, a break away system and a brake controller that's compatible with electric over hydraulic brake systems.
