Video Transcript for Review of Pro Series Trailer Breakaway Kit - Kit with Charger - 50-85-315

Jeff: Hello everybody. This is Jeff at Today we're going to take a look at this Reese Towpower Push to-Test Breakaway Kit with the Integrated Charger. Now, this breakaway system will activate your trailer's electric brakes if your trailer happens to disconnect from your tow vehicle. It does include this 12-volt rechargeable battery in the box with the charger and the breakaway switch with the cable. Now, this is a push-to-test battery feature on the top here, which will offer fast and easy battery testing. This test button right here, the blue button, it says push to test, this will indicate with LED lights if it will display the battery status.

So right now if I push it, I don't know if you can see it, but I push it and you can see the green button over here is lighting up. The green means that it's charged, so it's 12.8 volts or higher right now. If I pushed it and it showed yellow, that would mean it would be charging. And then if I pushed and it showed red, that would mean low battery and it needs to be charged. It does have a built-in charger which will automatically refuel the battery. It has a float mode which will maintain voltage while you tow without overcharging to prolong battery life and then a smart adjust feature which automatically switched to the float mode when the battery is fully charged.

This is a top loading case. You can see right here, you just push in on it. I'm going to pop it open for you. There you go. If you push it in, it'll pop open.

There's your battery and your connections all made and then when you close it, it'll snap shut. If you notice, it's a nice polymer construction, protects the battery from moisture and debris. Now the mounting hardware to install this is not included and this is a lockable lid. You can see the holes line up here. You could actually put a padlock through there to prevent theft. The padlock we do sell separately.

Also on top of the lid, they do have the wiring code. It shows you that to white wires . There's three wires that need to be connected. The white wire goes to ground, the black is to the battery for power and the blue goes to one of the wires on the breakaway switch. Now this breakaway switch this will install on your trailer's frame. Drilling is required to install this. You can see this cable here. This will attach to your tow vehicle and what happens in a runaway situation where it comes disconnected, it would pull this pin out which would activate the brakes to stop the trailer. There are two black wires on this. One goes to the blue wire on the battery box and the one connects to the electric brake trailer feed. The wire feed length on these is about 7-1/2" and the cable length, if I undid that, it would go out to about 4' long. Now, this is DOT, Department of Transportation compliant application. Application - this is for single, tandem and triple axle trailers with electric brakes. The battery capacity in this is 5 amp hours.Give you a few dimensions on this, on the battery box itself. Overall length, top is about the widest. It's 5-1/2". Width on it, 4-1/4" wide and the overall height is about 4-1/4" tall. The mounting holes on the back here that should mount to your trailer, distance between those center-to-center horizontally is about 5-5/8". And vertically center-to-center is right about 1". It does come with a nice set of detailed instructions that'll describe how everything hooks up and how it operates. But that should do it for the review on the Reese Towpower Push-to-Test Breakaway Kit with the Integrated Charger.

just like the quality of material used and ease of installation

I bought a few of these. I believe they work well considering one has lost the L.E.D. lights. The others are doing great. I like

Easy installation; Works as advertised! I added this to electric-over-hydraulic disc brakes on my 18' boat trailer to replace surge brakes. I highly recommend this system. My thanks to George for the help!

Huge improvement over surge brakes! Great addition to my boat trailer - Im in complete control!

Both Products arrived in a timely matter. Packaged to be shipped safely and received in excellent condition. Extremely simple to install in about 30 minutes time. Highly recommend the products and etrailer .com to everyone who asks me where to get trailering products and equipment needed to tow their trailers safely.

I was recommended this drop hitch by an etrailer employee (to use with a trailer that I completely refurbished, with parts almost exclusively from, and have been using it for a year now. It has been absolutely fantastic, and just what I needed. I am always confident that I'm using a quality product to tow my trailer with, which is imperative when my fur babies are along for the ride! My only complaint, is that the hitch does not come with a square cap to prevent water from sitting within the tubing of the hitch - it's cheap and not hard to find, but would be nice to accompany the hitch at the time of purchase.

This is the second time I have ordered from e trailer, very please with the communication and the fast processing and shipping , I will be using e trailer next time I need something

Great website, easy to find what you need
Check out is fast
Delivery was on time
Phone no. available for questions or problems
Would recommend to a friend

Great help on the phone and very fast s hipping.

Nice product but poor packaging by trailer. Product arrived damaged and since I needed to use my trailer the next day, I repaired it myself. Etrailer should have place the thin product box inside a better shipping box. They may have saved cost on their end but now have an unhappy customer.

So far so good, i trust it to be a solid unit should i ever have a breakaway.

I have been having trouble with my trailer brakes and noticed that the existing battery was no longer bolted to the trailer, but was loose in the storage compartment. Since it was several years old I decided to replace the whole system. The new one has a charging system , which will keep the battery charged. I will have to do some rewiring, but that will not be a problem. Thanks . This looks like a good system and i can't wait till I get some good weather to work on the trailer.

I installed the breakaway kit on my sailboat trailer. The trailer is completely submerged for launching and loading. The shape of the case allowed for attachment to the trailer so that the battery may be easily removed and reattached when it’s submerged.

The breakaway battery and charge works great! It keeps the battery charged all the time. I don't have to charge the battery with another charger its automatic as long as you use the trailer once in a while or at least hook it up to a vehicle for a while.

Can't really say much except no issues! Good instructions. Good price from etrailer. Complete kit... Hopefully I will never have to find out "how well" this works. I like the charge indicator light. I'd say very good product for a very fair price for a lot of insurance (and required in CA). A year with no issues. Battery charges. Light indicates. Decent enough instructions to wire it up. "Easy and done"

This was a great replacement for the old battery box that came on the trailer. I like that it charges the battery. There is a light on the top that doesn't serve a purpose really, It tells you that the battery is charging. There is a button to push to view it the battery is charged or charging, I am always worried that the light staying on will drain my battery on my truck.
Other then the light staying on I would have given it 5 stars.

The breakaway kit is exceptionally well made and priced far below most other suppliers of trailer parts.

A year later and its in perfect shape. The good news is that I havent had the need for the kit, but I know its ready should the trailer come loose.

Battery was fully charged when received, but put it on a float charger for a day just to be sure. Nice kit, easy to check the charge using the button and LED indicator on the top of the battery box. Install was easy (deciphering the rats nest of wiring in my cargo trailer was another story - thanks Pace America!). Should work well going forward and will be easy to check the charge before trips, like the fact that the controller will handle charging the battery while underway on the road as well.

I have been working on a horse trailer rebuild. I recently purchased brake drum assemblies, For this order I needed support to help determine the proper parts for the brakes. John provided a fast, knowledgeable response that helped insure that I was ordering the correct part numbers for my trailer. As usual, the order was processed quickly and was delivered fast. All the parts were delivered complete and no damage. Product quality is exceptional.

Easy to install. The instructions are written in plain English and easy to follow for an average technician with basic electrical knowledge.

Still working as expected! No problems or issues. I installed it with waterproof heatshrink crimp connectors. I have found it pays to spend a little bit more for the added security.

Product was exactly as described, easy to install, with great instructions. Everything I needed to complete installation on my livestock trailer. Battery charges while hooked to tow vehicle, and is still working great!

I have not installed the break away switch

installation kit (wiring harness) was time consuming. All parts required were provided. The instructions were clear and concise.

Brake controller is well design with all necessary features. Instructions were easy to understand. Easy installation.

Battery holds its charge well. No breakaways have occurred, so I can't offer an operational report, but I see no reason why this unit would not work as intended.

Very nice unit with one small flaw. The instructions were fine and the unit seems well made. It was easy to install, but (this is the flaw), the wires for the breakaway switch are only six inches long. This is woefully short and unnecessary on such a well made unit.

The product was received and was as described on the website. Installation was easy, but only due to using the video from etrailer. The enclosed instructions had different wire colors than what was on the unit. I then referred to the video and all was well. I find etrailer to be a great resource for both parts and install questions. Their tech staff is top notch, and they speak English....

Easy to install, easy to test.

This was very easy to install and works great. I put it on a boat trailer and has been under water several times, no issues. The level check is great for piece of mind, and knowing you need to throw it on a charger at the beginning of the season.

  • Is it Normal for Pro Series Breakaway Charger to Show Yellow Light Charging When Fully Charged
The Pro Series Breakaway Charger Kit # 50-85-315 is going to detect that the battery is receiving a charge from your tow vehicle since it connects to the 12 volt accessory circuit. It is charging but the battery is charged so it is normal.

  • Troubleshooting Reese Breakaway Switch Battery Not Charging Correctly
I would be happy to help! Based on the issue you are describing it sounds like the charger built in to the lid of our Pro-Series/Reese Breakaway Kit # 50-85-315 has gone bad and that's why you are not getting the battery to charged. I do not recommend connecting the wires directly to the battery terminals as with no charger there is nothing keeping the battery from being overcharged. Instead I recommend I recommend replacing your setup with the # 50-85-315 so you get a new charger to...

  • Do Drum Brake Assemblies Have Emergency Brakes?
For an emergency brake system, we recommend a break away kit like the Pro Series # 50-85-315, because trailers aren't designed exactly like passenger vehicles that come equipped with an extra parking brake. This breakaway kit has a battery attached and will send a power signal to your brakes to engage when the unit senses the pull cord has been removed. I have linked a helpful picture of what the inside of the pull pin unit looks like for you to better understand how it functions. The...

  • Should Pin of Trailer Breakaway Kit be Able to be Pulled and Trailer Move
Sounds like your breakaway battery is dead and that's why even with the pin pulled the brakes aren't locking up like they are supposed to. You'd still be able to tow your trailer around as it is but by law you are going to need to have your breakaway system working. For safety reasons and because if DOT pulls you over and checks your breakaway system like they sometimes do you'll get in some trouble if it's not working. Or you may just want to replace the entire thing with the part # 50-85-315...

  • Can Trailer Breakaway Kit Use Battery of Trailer
DOT really will only care that the breakaway system battery will be capable of holding the trailer brakes fully engaged for at least 15 minutes at any given time. It's wiser to use a dedicated battery for this so that you don't deplete the main trailer battery with other accessories and then when needed it not be able to fulfill it's duties to stop the trailer. I'd recommend using a kit like the part # 50-85-315 that you referenced which includes a dedicated battery.

The breakaway cable assembly that is part of the Pro Series Breakaway Kit # 50-85-315 will mount to the front of your trailer tongue so that the vehicle end of the cable can reach to the safety chain hook on the tow vehicle. • Do Trailer Breakaway Systems Usually Power from Separate Trailer Battery
Typically breakaway systems on trailers like yours will be powered from a separate smaller battery than the two larger ones you have on your trailer. You can trace the wiring of the switch back to see where it ends, but typically the breakaway system is in a box that is somewhat near the nose of the trailer. I attached a chart that shows how a breakaway system usually wires up as well. I also attached a help article on trailer breakaway systems for you to check out as well.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Breakaway Switch Where Wiring Causes Light to be Yellow all the Time
I believe the problem is the connection of the switch on your breakaway. You said you went from blue brake output on the trailer to the blue wire of the switch and then on the other side of the switch you went to a black wire. You should have went to the blue wire of the battery box. The black wire of the battery box goes to the 12 volt power of the 7-way which is typically red. Check out the diagram I attached for more info as well.

  • Available Replacement Battery Box Lid for Pro Series 50-85-315 Break Away System with Charger
Unfortunately, Pro Series doesn't offer a replacement lid or even a replacement box for their # 50-85-315 trailer break away kit. Your best bet would be to replace the system. The good news is that they aren't horribly expensive, and this way you'll get a new battery so you'll be good to go for quite some time. • Why Does DOT Require Breakaway Battery to Activate Trailer Brakes for 15 Minutes
That is correct. The DOT requires that a breakaway battery kit, like the Pro Series # 50-85-315, be able to activate the trailer brakes for 15 continuous minutes. A breakaway battery is used more or less as a last resort to help minimize the effects of a disaster on the highway. If you are towing correctly then the only time that a trailer SHOULD come uncoupled is in the event of an accident. Otherwise the coupler should remain attached to the hitch ball, and it that disconnects then the...
