Video Transcript for All You Need to Know About the Pack'Em Shovel Rack for Open Utility Trailers

Today on our utility trailer, we're going to be installing the Pack Em Shovel Rack for open utility trailers, part number PK-BM-23. First, you want to choose a location that you want to mount the shovel rack on your utility trailer. We chose the mount it across the front section of this utility trailer. I will begin by installing the two cross members to the two uprights using the hardware supply. The hardware we'll be using to do this is a bolt as well as a nylon lock knot. Here's the flat side of the upright bracket, and this will go against the trailer here, so it would be like this. As well as having our cross piece you want it angled back, so that the shovel ends can go down inside the trailer. Now, we're going to go ahead and take one of our bolts and our knots, and start putting the cross member to the upright.

Now, that we have got the hardware installed, we'll go ahead and tighten it down. Now that we've got the first cross member in, now we'll go ahead and install the second one. Now, we found that mounting the second bracket, it connects it to uprights in and second set of holes down from the top allowed the shovels provide a little bit better. Now, we'll go ahead and mount our second bracket, again, using the hardware supplied. Now that we've got the hardware installed, we'll go ahead and tighten it down. Now that we've got the uprights and the cross members secured together, now we'll go ahead and raise the rack up in the position, then we'll measure each side of the trailer, so that we make sure that we put it in the center. Let's turn our rack around here again, make sure that the flat side is up against the trailer.

Now that we've got our rack centered on our trailer where we want it, we'll go ahead and take a marker here, just put a couple of marks to make sure we go back to the same spot. Now to attach the rack to the trailer, that hardware doesn't come with the kit. The holes that are already in the rack are 3/8' , so you need to get some 3/8'' bolts, as well as some 3/8 nylon lock knots to secure the rack to the trailer. Now, after taking some measurements, we realize that the hole that's built in to the upright right here is actually going to put the hole too high to tie in with the piece of angle iron in here on the front of the trailer. We're going to need to go ahead and mark each of the uprights and drill a new hole a little bit lower, so that we hit the angle iron on the front of the trailer. Now that we have each side marked, we'll go ahead and lay the rack down and drill out the two upright holes first. Now, we'll put the rack back up in the position and remark where we need to drill to the wood as well as the angle iron here on the front of the trailer. With the holes marked, we'll go ahead and set the rack out of the way.

Now, we'll go ahead and begin by putting a pilot hole in each of the two holes, followed up by drilling it out with our 3/8 bit. Now that the two bottom holes have been drilled, we'll go ahead and install our hardware. Again, the hardware does not come with the kit to mount the rack to your trailer. In our case, we're going to be using some 3/8 bolts and 3/8 nylon lock knots. Now that we have the two bottom bolts in and the knots unlosely 00:04:59, we'll go ahead and tighten those two down. Now, for the top two bolt holes, there's no hole here in the upright as it doesn't line up exactly with our trailer. Again, we're going to need to mark a hole here and drill through the upright, the wood, and our piece of angle iron here at the front of the trailer.

Now to make sure everything stays nice and tight, we're going to go ahead and use a couple of clamps to hold the uprights to the trailer here as we do our drilling on the top two holes. Now with our clamps in place, we'll go ahead and drill out the top hole on each of the uprights. We'll begin by putting a pilot hole again followed by the 3/8 bit. Now that we have both of the upper holes drilled out, we'll go ahead and install our 3/8 bolt followed by our nylon hex knot. Now we'll go ahead and tighten down these two locations. That's all there is to it to installing the shovel rack on our utility trailer. Now to use the shovel rack, simply take the handle portion of the shovel, slide it down through the top rubber grommet, go down through the second rubber grommet, and push the shovel all the way down. That's all there is to it. This rack does hold a total of six shovels or in this case you can see we also have a rake installed. Anything with a long handle similar to a shovel will work with this rack. That's all there is to the installation of the Pack Em Shovel Rack for open utility trailers, part number PK-BM-23.a.

These were a bit of a puzzle to install on my Carry-On 5x8SPW (Tractor Supply branded) and required some effort to get done, but turned out nice. My life was saved by some anodized black braces I found at True Value (see photos). The best ones were 7.5 x 1.5 x 1/8 and fit inside the uprights to form a foot. The photo also shows how we had to cut a notch in the E-track to accomodate the foot. For attaching to the rail I used the 2.4 x 3 x 1/8 braces since there weren't enough of the other in stock. Both of these braces were also available in a heavier gauge. In practice I found some taller tools must be removed from the rack for the trailer to fit in most of our storage sheds/garages. However we just added that to our mob/demob process and it works fine.

Still working great a year later. We have found that garden tools with spongy handles do not fit in the holes. This can be fixed by removing the foam on the handles and nobody really needs them so that has worked out for us.

I recently ordered this rack for my shovels and rakes to keep them neat, organized, and out of my way when not in use.

Shipping was very fast and everything was packaged up very nicely.

Hardware comes with rack to bolt the 6 hole racks to the towers, the only hardware you will need to get yourself is bolts, lock washers, and nuts to mount the towers to your trailer. To mount the tower to my trailer I got some Grade 8 3/8" bolts from lowes.

My trailer is a pipe top so on one of the towers I used a U-bolt up top to mount it to the trailer, rack mounts very securely and if I shake the rack it moves the trailer with it. I love it and look forward to having this on my trailer this year.
