Video Transcript for Blue Ox Adjustable Ball Mount with Pintle Hook Review

Hi everyone. Aiden here at the etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at this Blue Ox Adjustable Ball Mount with Pintle Hook for your two and a half inch hitches. So, this ball mount can be used in a couple different ways. It's got the two and five sixteens ball out on the front, so you can use it with a standard coupler and it's gonna have a 20,000 pound gross towing weight. That's how much it can pull in a max tongue weight of 2000 pounds.

Now, if you've got a lunette ring trailer that would drop down over and around that ball you can secure it with the built-in pintle hook. It's secured up with a pin right now, but we just drop that down into place over the lunette ring, put that pin clip back on and then you'd be ready to tow your lunette ring trailer. The weight capacity remains the same with that, so depending on what you're carrying and what you're hauling, you're able to adjust this and use it with multiple trailer types. This is also gonna be height adjustable. That'll help with fitting it up to different trailers depending on their ride height, so you can match it and tow level.

We've got it in the lowest position right now, with an eight and three quarter of an inch drop. But by removing the two pins and clips on the side, we can move it up to get a two and five eighths of an inch rise at the very top end. So, you've got a lot of room to move around here and these holes are spaced out an inch part, center on center. So that's the kind of increments you'd be working with for your adjustment. (pin clipping) One thing you will notice if you look at the ball mount with the ball removed is we've got a bolt back here with three threaded holes.

So, I'm gonna just loosely set this in place right now. What that is is a built in anti-rattle device. So after we get this set to our proper height, we can go through to that bolt at the back and tighten it down. And it will actually take this rattling right here out of the ball mount. Let's check that out.

That bolt will just thread into the very back, lined up with the ball wherever you have it set. Hand tight it for now and then come back through with the included Allen key and fully tighten it down. Once that's fully tight, there's gonna be no movement in this section of the ball mount. We still have some in the actual hitch of the vehicle but as far as out back goes, everything's rock solid. As for the movement in the actual hitch receiver that can also be solved with an anti rattle device. You've got plenty of different styles and options to choose from here at etrailer. It's not included with the ball mount but you can pick one up pretty inexpensively and it's gonna make for a much quieter and more pleasant towing experience overall. Some measurements you might wanna keep in mind is gonna be from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball where your trailer is gonna be hooking up. That'll let you know know how far your trailer's gonna sit away from your vehicle. That's gonna be coming in right at 12 and a half inches. So you do get a good bit of distance from your hitch when hooking up. And that measurement is actually from this hitch pin hole right here. When this is slid a little bit more into the hitch. If you need about an extra inch of clearance, you can use this other hitch pin hole to secure it, so you can have this sticking out from your vehicle just a little bit more. The hitch pin and clip is included with it. It's just a standard pin and clip, so I would definitely recommend upgrading to a locking one, just so you've got that security aspect. But it's nice that they include one right out of the box. When you're using the pintle hook attachment, it's pretty easy to use. And right now when you take that pin out, you can't just lift it straight up. You have to use this release handle to open it up like that. Whenever you drop your trailer on top of that and close it up, you don't have to worry about the handle, you'll hear it kind of click into place as it secures itself. And then that pinning clip is gonna be your added layer of security on top of that. Everything on here is gonna be rust corrosion resistant in some form or fashion. The ball is gonna be chrome plated and the rest of the ball mount is gonna be coated in a black powder coat finish. That's gonna help it resist rust and corrosion over time, not immune, but it will help and it does feel like a good quality finish too. One thing I did notice with this that I didn't particularly like is that for the threaded holes in that anti rattle device, there isn't a spot up top for it. So if you're using this in the very tallest position to get a little bit of rise, you're not gonna be able to utilize that and get that anti-rattle. So, that's a pretty minor use case, but if you plan on using this ball mount in that configuration, just know that it's not gonna work. And overall it's gonna be a really solid ball mount. I like that built in anti-rattle quite a bit because that can get pretty obnoxious when you're towing and it's just nice to see it built into the ball mount and not something that you have to pick up separately. Now, if you're gonna compare this to anything I'd maybe check out the B & W Tow and Stow. It's gonna sacrifice a bit of weight capacity compared to this, so if you need something more heavy duty, stick with this. But that one still has a pintle hook attachment and when it's not in used, it can flip around backwards and kind of stow away, so it isn't sticking out so much from your hitch. That way if you wanna leave it installed between towing you don't have to worry about bumping into it as much. It'll be a lot more out of sight and then you can flip it around when you're ready to go for next time. And that'll do it for a look at this Blue Ox Ball Mount with the Pintle Hook for your two and a half inch hitches. Thanks for watching.

I received my Blue Ox adjustable ball mount with pintle hook for 2.5" hitch, 8.75" drop, 20k lb rated, yesterday. Packaging was great. Shipping took longer, as they held the order until one other item in the shipment was back in stock. I didn't realize I could have them send me the in-stock items right away, but I did that when I was exploring my order page and happened to click on the "manage my order" link.

I'm VERY happy with the pintle- its finish looks solid and the whole package is what I expected it to be. The only issue I can find is the anti-rattle screw is too short to touch the back of the pintle before it bottoms out- at least in the position height in which ill be using it (the three threaded hole options dont help, either) . Not a huge deal, as I could just go buy a longer hex bolt, but for almost $350, it should come with a long enough screw. This would be a Blue Ox issue, but it should be noted in the item description until it's rectified by the supplier, or etrailer throws a proper length screw in the package.

It came with a hex wrench for the anti-rattle screw (awesome), AND a hitch pin for the receiver, so I didn't have to buy one of those, which is nice.

Overall, I'm very happy with the item and customer service. I've purchased other items from etrailer, and they don't disappoint. I'll definitely buy again from these fine folks.
Their website and videos are excellent, not to mention they post answers to any questions you may have- a feature I've used a couple times now. Overall, a very thoughtful company that I trust.
