Video Transcript for What to Know About the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball

What's up everybody Adam here with etrailer. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at a B&W ball. So this trailer ball's gonna be for your two and five-sixteenths couplers. So all you gotta do is just go on your coupler and make sure it's the right size. And this is gonna have a gross trailer weight of 16,000 pounds. It has a stainless steel construction, so it's going to do its best to resist against rust and corrosion but, as you know, when you use these things, they start to scratch up, doesn't matter what kind of coatings on it, it will eventually start to rust away.

You don't want to get one that's going to show signs of rust, they'll still work the same, but to avoid that, you can just grab a aluminum trailer ball here at etrailer. And we do wanna make sure that the ball mount is gonna match the ball when it comes to its weight rating. Just so we're not really limiting ourselves, right off the bat. So that's pretty much all you really have to do to figure out exactly which one's gonna be best for you. What really sets this one apart It does have a lot of threads.

So, there's different kinds of threads some coarse threaded, which is just kind of spread out, but then this is a little bit finer. So about 12 threads per inch. What that basically does is it's gonna help you torque this down. It's gonna be extra tight and that's always something we need to think about. We are gonna have to torque this down to 450 foot pounds, which is a lot.

We don't sell any torque wrenches that are gonna go up to that, so you might have to take it to a shop or find a way to make sure that this thing is tightened down properly. When it comes to trailer balls, there really isn't a whole lot you gotta look at. One, just match it up with the coupler, make sure it's the right size, make sure the weight capacity is gonna be in line with whatever you're pulling. And of course you just need to match it up with the right ball mount. We have everything you need here at etrailer.

Just take those things from this video to figure out exactly if this is gonna be right for you. It looks good and again, it's just a trailer ball, so it's gonna get the job done. If we we're to upgrade, I guess you can go with the aluminum trailer ball. It is a more premium option, but it's not gonna rust away, but at the end of the day, it's gonna get the job done. And that's gonna do it for a look at the B&W trailer ball..

2-5/16" Hitch Ball - 1-1/4" Diameter x 2-1/2" Long Shank - Chrome - 16,000 lbs - BWHB94050

Average Customer Rating:  4.9 out of 5 stars   (455 Customer Reviews)

The B&W 2 5/16" ball is of a high quality build, just what I would expect. My only concern is that the base of the ball has no flat grab sides for a wrench to hold it still while the nut is being tightened. Once I got it as tight as I could, both the nut, shank and ball rotated as one. I did not want to use a pipe wrench to hold the base of the ball and gouge tool marks into the metal and finish. Something with this much weight rating, I think, should be able to be tightened down to a recommended torque spec, which was absent from the mounting instructions. I tightened it as much as I could and put a torque stripe along the mount, nut and threads... So far, it has not moved. Other than that, I think its great.

Our installers typically wrap the trailer ball with a rag or towel so that they can get a good grip on the ball but not damage the finish.

Great price for this very high quality hitch ball. B&W can’t be beat!

Works great! I dont think I will ever break it, its really beefy. The reason I purchased it was I tow a 10k trailer and noticed most hitches at the local parts store arent even close in towing capacity.better safe than sorry.

by:

Convenient to put on and take off. Sturdy. I would definitely recommend this product.

Great heavy duty

I selected this ball to equip a heavy-duty W/D hitch system that I was buying for my new truck. I didn't actually need equipment with this much capacity given that our current trailer only weighs ~5200 lbs loaded, but I didn't want to have to replace anything if we upgrade to a much heavier trailer since the truck can easily handle anything that I'd ever dare to tow. This ball is still in perfect condition (I keep it clean & greased), and the only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is that it was impossible to tighten fully to spec since it didn't have opposing "flats" on the base to put a wrench on and keep it from turning while torqueing the nut down.

Weve been using this hitch ball for over a year now, and its still in like new condition. Keeping all of the contact surfaces wiped clean and covered lightly with moly grease certainly helps, but the high-grade steel alloy and durable chrome plating probably deserves most of the credit for its excellent performance thus far.

Rachel B was awesome to deal with. I ordered this hitch ball and received it quickly through UPS. When I tried to install it the threads were burred that caused the nut to seize and not fully tighten. I called eTrailer and talked to Rachel B who promptly addressed the issue and sent me out a new ball which works flawlessly. The ball is of very high quality and very well made. Worth every penny. It's rated for 16,000 pounds versus China made Reese Tow Ready balls are only rated 10,000??? I also purchased this ball because it's made in the USA!!!! Will purchase again soon from eTrailer!

by:

Great item shipped quick!

by:

I wanted to purchase a ball and mount for hauling up to 14000# and wanted them made in the US. Etrailer had exactly what I wanted, communication was great and shipping was fast. I've used the Convert-a-Ball cushioned mount before on a smaller trailer, but I couldn't believe how great it worked with a heavier trailer. I'm really happy with my purchase. Thanks.

by:

Nice looking product. I have every confidence it will work as advertised. Paid a little more $ but it’s made in the USA.

by:

This ball hitch is extremely well made and durable. Handles my towing needs readily. Rated 4 stars only, as it would be a HUGE improvement to have flat-sided base to be able to get a wrench on for installation.

by:

Works great

by:

Nice product. Wrench flats would be handy but I don't plan on removing it. A friend with a big truck repair shop is handy. Not everybody has a torque wrench that will do 415 ft lbs.

by:

Great USA-made quality. That's what I was looking for. Very happy with this ball. The only reason I gave 4 stars is the fact that I would have really liked a way to put a wrench on the flange but since it is rounded I can't. Other than that - great!

by:

appears to be a good, strong hitch ball. will find out for sure when i use it to tow my RV.

by:

Great product would buy again

by:

There is no method of securing the ball while tightening the nut (i.e. no flat spots on the base). I am unable to tighten the nut to have at least one thread show, let alone to the proper torque. I will probably have to mangle the ball just trying to remove it so that it can be replaced (in a hurry) with a suitable ball before this weekend.

by:

High quality product, I have worked it hard and it is hold up very well!

For a spare Fastway e2 weight distribution hitch head we have the following: - Round Bar # FA94-02-1055 - Trunnion Bar # FA92-02-1255 These don't come with a hitch ball already installed so you'll need either a 2" Hitch Ball # C69FR or 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # BWHB94050 as well. With the Gen-Y Cushioned Weight Distribution Shank part # GY92RR you could use the ball mount adapter part # BA-1 so that you could use a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball like the # BWHB94050 and you'd be set. This would limit the setup to towing a 10,000 lb trailer though.

  • Does the B&W Receiver Reducer Sleeve Reduce the Tongue Weight and Towing Capacity
The short answer to this question is- No. The B&W Hitch Receiver Reducer Sleeve # BWRHXA2182 does not reduce the tongue weight or towing capacity of your hitch in the same manner that a hitch adapter like the # HTAD would. You will still be able to tow and carry the full capacity that your vehicle and hitch are rated at. While it is rated for towing, you would still be best served by using a ball mount for a 2-1/2" receiver since those are often rated properly for towing applications...

Without knowing the rise or drop you need, or the weight capacity, I can only offer a couple of general recommendations for ball mounts with long shafts. I'd recommend upgrading that hitch, ASAP. If the hitch fails while you're towing, causing an accident, your insurance company would be well within their rights to deny you coverage which would leave you wide open to all kinds of legal liability.
