Video Transcript for Checking Out the 2" Hitch Ball

Today were going to take a look at the Curt 2-inch hitch ball, part number 40038. This hitch ball is 2 inches in diameter. It has a shank diameter of 1 inch, and a shank length of 2 inches. The wrench flats, as you can see here and here, are 1 5/8 of an inch apart. This item has a weight capacity of 12,000 pounds. It features fine threads for more holding strength.

It meets US V5 specifications and it is tested for safety. Now were going to bring in our ball mount and our trailer hitch demonstrator to show you how this would be installed. You would just slide the shank into the ball hole, place the washer, the washer and the nut do come with this item, and then finger tighten that, and once youve got that as tight as you can get it by finger tightening, you would get your wrench and tighten it the remainder of the way so you can use it with your trailer coupler and attach your trailer. That should do it for our Curt 2-inch hitch ball, part number 40038.

Great advice when I called for technical question about trailer balls -- answered by a live human who knew what they were talking about. This Hitchball has served us well over 9,000 miles of towing our Casita.

This trailer ball is well made. It stillfunctions as it should over another 1000 miles

I neeed to pull a trailer with my 2019 GMC Yukon. I found Etrailer.com and followed the instructions on determining the drop of the hitch, the instructions were spot on. I hooked up my trailer to my Yukon today, all was level and worked perfectly.

I had driven around to Napa, Lowe’s, Home Depot and Walmart, and nobody had the 9” drop hitch I needed. Came back to Etrailer, bought the 2” ball and pin, and the Curt 9” drop hitch. I received the items quickly.

Great website,

Thanks,

Craig

Best price , very good 2" hitch Ball , Chrome is nice and clean. Fast delivery. Thank you, Mike Kaplan

by:

The Curt receiver, ball mount, ball, and wiring harness were all of excellent quality. Receiver bolt holes were perfectly aligned with SUV holes. Sturdy, heavy, and confidence building knowing my hitch is well built. I will now have peace of mind pulling a trailer.

by:

its a ball, it works. What more is there to say.

by:

Works like a champ

by:

Works as it should for over a year

by:

Super impressed with the service and timeliness of your organization. Found y’all randomly on google and you are super legit. Helpful website, helpful recs, customer reviews. Customer service great too. Forgot part of my order (wiring harness) and it was overnighted, arrived on time. Everything on point. Keep it up.

The hitch itself was easy enough to install. Had to really use some PBlaster on the rear most holes and ended up needing an impact to get the job done. Beware kinda hard with just hand tools if the receiving holes are rusty,

by:

I received this hitch the next day during the vivid-19 pandemic. It was very easy to install.

2020 Subaru Outback
Pull the small rear panel off the bumper, remove 6 bolts and slip the hitch in between the bumper bar and the frame, tighten the new bolts in (not the stock bolts) and put everything back together. The reason there is a open hole on the hitch is because you cannot remove the bumper bar without removing the whole back end which would be a royal pain.

The brake wiring connector is right on the rear part of the spare tire compartment on the passenger side. It was hard to find but it just all snapped together.

Awesome product, awesome service!!

What to say about a hitch ball? It went on the mount easily and quickly. All parts and instructions were included, packaged well, and in perfect condition. Delivery was fast. Price was excellent and the customer services was even better! Thanks to Paula S. And etrailer for another great experience.

by:

Took me about three hours. The Hitch was easy(About an hour including getting the tools ready). Fit perfectly! A Little Harder installing it by myself from the garage floor but, it can be done! Cutting the plastic and re-installing it took some time. Over all very happy with the hitch. Will recommend to others!!

by:

Great service and product just like all the reviews say. Thanks a lot got the mount the ball and the lock arrived fast and fit perfect. I think they will work great.

by:

Heavy duty! It’ll definitely work.

by:

Seems like a quality piece that was made by someone who cared. The finish was even and consistant. The threads were smooth as silk without the slightest bind as the nut was threaded up the shank by hand. If it holds up in use (resists corrosion) it will be just that much better. The 12,000 lb load capacity should handle the 1,650 lb camper I'll be pulling :-)

by:

Nice and shiny. Does exactly what it's supposed to.

by:

I received the hitch and ball today! Fast shipping and looks great too!

by:

Looks like it is well worth the money.

by:

Instalation was pretty quick and easy, the completed installation worked great on my new trailer.

by:

it is what it is and looks well made. Havn't put 12000 lbs. on it yet but looks like it will handle it!

by:

I benefited greatly from the information at etrailer.com when outfitting my new Honda Pilot with a trailer hitch, wire harness, hitch, and ball.
Everything was high quality, the video instructions for installation were perfect.
I saved just over $1000 compared to what the new car dealer would have charged me to install the same items.

Continue to get reliable use of my Etrailer ball and hitch. Quality material.

by:

I know the finish won’t last but I was hoping I’d get a little longer out of it. It just seems like it aged very quickly and I even greased it to save it a bit although you’re not supposed to for general trailer safety. Still works though… don’t know what else you could ask. If you buy one, but from etrailer. No better site on the internet

We do recommend greasing the hitch ball to help disconnecting the coupler and to help protect rust. Use with the trailer coupler is going cause scratches which will eventually lead to rust. I recommend using grease part # 58117 with the ball.

  • Differences Between Trailer Hitches for 2022 Chevy Bolt EV
Both the EcoHitch # 306-X7359 and the Draw-Tite # DT47GR are partially concealed once installed. The only visible portion of the hitch will be the receiver tube and safety chain loops, with the remainder of the hitch being concealed behind the vehicle's bumper. The EcoHitch # 306-X7359 features a 2 inch receiver tube, so if you're needing the hitch for a hitch mounted accessory designed for a 2 inch hitch, this would be the hitch you'd want to use. The Draw-Tite # DT47GR has a 1-1/4 inch...

Thank you for providing that picture and measurement. Based on what you have there there is definitely enough room to install a weight distribution hitch. I recommend the Fastway e2 which will require placing the brackets 27-30" back along the frame, leaving you with room to spare. The correct system will depend on the tongue weight of your loaded setup. The best way to find this is to measure with a scale like the # e99044. I have also attached an article below which covers other ways...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch for Somerset E3 Pop Up Camper
That answer you looked at is a bit confusing and I think it gave you the wrong idea about weight distribution. A weight distribution hitch should not be selected based on your tow vehicle. The most important thing is making sure your loaded tongue weight falls into the tongue weight range of the hitch. I don't know what year or exact model you have but I'm guessing 268 lbs is the dry tongue weight. You will need to measure to see what your loaded tongue weight is, or at least find the...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch for 2019 Toyota Highlander Towing 2018 R-Pod 179
The weight distribution hitch in the question you looked at was based on the loaded trailer tongue weight. It is impossible to find the right WDH based on the vehicle alone. It looks like your 2018 R-Pod 179 has a dry tongue weight of 292 lbs so based on the GVWR you're probably maxing out tongue weight around 400 lbs.
