Video Transcript for Review of Curt Trailer Hitch Ball - Trailer Hitch Ball - C40001

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Curt 1 7/8 inch diameter hitch ball with the 3/4 inch diameter shank, and a 2,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now, this hitch ball will provide the connection point for your 1 7/8 inch trailer's coupler, and will accept up to a 2,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. On the shank of the ball, has the fine threads on it that provide a nice tight, strong grip. And the dimensions on the shank, the length of it, it's gonna be right at 1 5/8 inches long, and the diameter on it is right at 3/4 of an inch. Now, this ball is constructed from a high strength hot forged steel, you can see it has a nice corrosion resistant chrome finish to it, and if you notice on the sides, the two flat ends here, these built-in wrench flats make it easy to hold the ball in place while you're tightening down the nut.

The nut itself as a zinc plated 1 1/8 inch size hex nut, and it comes with the lock washer for secure mounting to the ball mount. This is designed to fit ball mount platforms that are 3/8 inch to 5/8 inch thick, and when you install this, this shank will just drop through the hole in the platform. After it's through the platform, put your lock washer on there, put your nut on there, and then tighten it down to the correct specified torque. Again, the specs on this, the ball diameter is 1 7/8 inches, which is marked on the top, and the weight capacity is 2,000 pounds gross towing weight capacity, which is also marked on the top. But that should do it for the review on the Curt 1 7/8 inch diameter hitch ball with the 3/4 inch diameter shank, and the 2,000 pound gross towing weight capacity..

I moved from Arkansas to Washington State last year and towed a small UHaul with my 2017 Chevy Trax, which has the new hitch that I purchased from you. Everything worked great and I had no trouble whatsoever.

by:

Works great for my e-trailer kayak trailer, also used it for a U-haul tow from Sonoma County California to Gold Beach Oregon.

by:

Still working

by:

Good products, reasonable prices

by:

Was a complete fit, goes past my bumper. The diverlery was fast. I'm completely satisfied with your product and will recommend to my friends.

by:

Easy installation, everything fit as advertised. Works great too.

by:

Who cares the other part is useless

by:

Fit perfectly, good finish!

by:

This is a very good product but the real story is the fantastic service and support you receive even in a problem install like I had on my Fit. Three people helped me with the semi custom install I needed. Now perfect. Repeat customer, second install great products and company

by:

Easy installation. Helps to have two people, however, I installed it alone with the help of jack stands. I highly recommend the Curt receiver. I have another Curt receiver on my 2011 Honda Accord that I also purchased from etrailer.com.

I just finished hauling a load of bush and tree trimmings to the dump with my utility trailer. Attached is a close up photo of the receiver in use.

by:

Strong part with a sharp look! Good pri ce!

by:

Good quality and price

by:

Solid ball. I love that spring washer that comes with this ball. It locks in every inch of torque you apply.

by:

Received item as advertised in a timely manner. Will certainly do business again as needed in the future. Will certainly recommend.

by:

All the items in my order arrived today. Thanks for your continued follow-up on this order and the speedy shipping once you had the item on hand. I also appreciated the installation video and pictures on etrailer. com. I routinely recommend that my customers reference your website for install instructions and product explanation videos. Keep up the good worK.

by:

The cost was cheaper than I could find elsewhere. No frills easy to install.

by:

I bought this ball and drawbar to attach to my Polaris Sportsman ATV to pull my trailer around. The drawbar was a perfect fit to raise up the trailer and level it. Well made product, welded nicely to the smaller receiver bar and is perfect for what I needed. I would recommend this product.

by:

Works as designed.

Havent used it much but it has performed as it should

by:

The ball started to rust pretty quickly, even though I put a bit of grease on the ball and hitch before I ever used it. Functionally it is still a round hunk of metal that does it's job...it just doesn't look very good.

by:

Great selection, fair pricing, and they got my order to me in two days.

by:

Just fine, shipped with the rest of the order and was on time.

by:

Looks to be a quality hitch ball, easy to install.

I only use them a couple times a years, still work fine.

by:

Shipped and arrived quickly, and appears to be of good quality. A suggestion: like many others, I don't have a socket big enough for the nut, and my torque wrench only goes to 80 ft-lb (the spec calls for 160). I will have to go to a local garage and have them tighten the ball onto the ball mount. I would have been happy to throw eTrailer a couple of bucks or so to have them do this for me when they filled the order. Please consider offering this service.

by:

Nice quality, easy install, great on line directions and light kit, just plug and done

by:

Good looking hitch ball, good price.

  • Hitch Ball Option for a Trailer with a 1-3/4 inch Hitch Ball Coupler
We do not carry any 1-3/4 inch hitch balls. The only option I could recommend for you would be to upgrade the coupler on your trailer to work with the modern ball sizes of 1-7/8, 2, or 2-5/16 inch balls. I attached a page that has all of the couplers we offer plus a page that has all of the hitch balls we carry. I would recommend you check out the couplers and find one that will fit your trailer style and has enough capacity and then find a ball designed to fit that coupler that is also...

  • How Tall is the Ball Part Only for Curt 1-7/8 Inch Ball 40001
I went out to the warehouse and pulled Curt ball # C40001 to measure it for you. The height of the ball from the ball mount platform to the top of the ball is 2.619 inches which is just a hair under 2-5/8 inches.

  • How to Install Curt Trailer Hitch Ball 40001 in a Ball Mount
To install hitch ball # C40001 you will need a wrench wide enough to fit around the wrench flats on the ball, a torque wrench good for up to 160 foot pounds and a socket for the nut. You could also use a bench vise if you do not have a wrench large enough. You can also put the ball mount in the hitch receiver side ways and then use the wrench and torque wrench to tighten it. If you do not have a torque wrench or socket large enough, many auto parts stores can loan out tools.

  • Is There an Adapter to go From 1-1/4 inch Hitch Size to 2 inch Hitch Size
We do have adapters that are designed to go from a 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch to a 2 inch hitch like the Hitch Adapter part # HTAD. You should note that the tongue weight capacity of your hitch gets cut in half if you use this adapter.

  • Availability of 1-7/8 Inch Hitch Ball With a 1/2 Inch Diameter Shank
We can get you pretty close. The closest thing we offer would be the # C40095 ball from Curt that is a 1-7/8 inch ball with a 5/8 inch shank. If it's possible to enlarge that eye from 1/2 inch to 5/8, I'd recommend going that route. Since you'd only be increasing the hole size by about an 1/8 of an inch, you wouldn't need to worry about removing too much material from the pull bar.

  • Trailer Ball Recommendation for Swagman Trailhead Towing Bike Rack
We do offer some 1-7/8 inch trailer balls with a 3/4 inch diameter threaded shank, but we don't offer one with an exactly-3000 lb weight capacity. We do however offer a 2000 lb capacity ball as part # C40001 which would work well for light-duty towing up to 2000 lbs.

  • Hitch Ball Recommendations for Ball Mount 36078
There isn't a specific length ball shank required for ball mount # 36078. It just has to be long enough to have 3 threads or more exposed beyond the nut when tight. If you need a 2 inch ball # C40018 is a popular option. For a 1-7/8 inch ball # C40001 is a popular option.

  • What Size Ball Hole do Ball Mounts that Fit 1-1/4 inch Hitches Have
All of the Class II ball mounts out there have a 3/4 inch diameter ball hole. It might be the best solution for you to replace the ball you have with one that will fit that ball hole size like what comes with the # 36065 that you mentioned. For a 2 inch ball you'd need the # C40018 or for a 1-7/8 inch ball # C40001 and you'd be set.

To find the right ball mount you need to tow your Coleman Popup Camper level you can take a couple of quick measurements. Park the trailer and your RAV 4 on level ground. Measure from the top of the trailer receiver opening to the ground. Then measure from the ground to the bottom of the coupler on your trailer. If the hitch height is greater you need a ball mount with a drop. If the trailer coupler height is greater you need a ball mount with a rise. Take a look at your trailer coupler...

  • Availability Of A 1-1/4" Draw Bar And 1-7/8" Ball With 0" Of Rise
Happy Monday to you as well! I do have a potential solution for you. We do not carry a draw bar with a true 0" rise, but what you can do is use the Curt Class 2 Drawbar # C45503. This has a 3/8" rise, and will be the closest thing we have to a 0" rise. You can use it with the 1-7/8" hitch ball # C40001. Keep in mind that with this setup, you are limited to towing 2,000 lbs or less.

  • Hitch Ball Recommendations for a Curt Ball Mount part # C45024
For a ball with a 1-7/8 inch diameter you would want the Hitch Ball part # C40001 and then for one with a 2 inch ball you would want the Hitch Ball # C40018. The shank of both of these balls is 3/4 of an inch in diameter and is 1-9/16 inches long for the # C40001 and 2-1/8 inches long on the # C40018.

Good news, I can help. What you will want to do is get a different ball mount. The current ball mount that you have # C45571 has a length of 7-1/4" from center of hitch pin hole to center of ball hole and a rise of 2-5/8" (from top of inside of hitch opening to start of vertical curve). It also has a 1-7/8" ball. I recommend getting the 9-1/4" long # C45520 ball mount and 1-7/8" # C40001 ball. This ball mount setups will give you the clearance from the bumper you need to tow your trailer...

  • Drawbar Will Not Fit Trailer Hitch On 2004 John Deere Buck ATV
The problem you probably are facing is that you have to use a Class l ball mount in the hitch receiver on your John Deere ATV. The shank on a Class ll ball mount is inserted in the receiver more than on a 1-1/4 inch receiver and the holes will not line up. I went to the warehouse and measured the Curt Class l Drawbar, part # C45021. The distance from the end of the shank that goes in the receiver to the center of the hitch pin hole is 1-1/2 inches. I went to the warehouse and pulled hitch balls with a 3/4 inch shank and 1 inch shank made by Curt and Tow-Ready and Reese to compare the threads. The nuts are interchangeable between the 3/4 inch shank hitch balls as well as the 1 inch hitch balls, so if you are using a Curt hitch ball, you can use a nut from a Tow-ready, or Reese hitch ball with the same size shank with no problem.

Using an adapter would lower the tongue weight capacity by half. It's a matter of the structure of the vehicle where the hitch attaches not being strong enough. That being said we offer a hitch for your vehicle as there is a demand for it. We have the Curt part # C11077 which has a pretty low towing capacity of 1,000 lbs total trailer weight and 100 lbs tongue weight.
