Video Transcript for What to Know About the 1-7/8" Hitch Ball

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Curt 1 7/8 inch diameter hitch ball with the 3/4 inch diameter shank, and a 2,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now, this hitch ball will provide the connection point for your 1 7/8 inch trailer's coupler, and will accept up to a 2,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. On the shank of the ball, has the fine threads on it that provide a nice tight, strong grip. And the dimensions on the shank, the length of it, it's gonna be right at 1 5/8 inches long, and the diameter on it is right at 3/4 of an inch. Now, this ball is constructed from a high strength hot forged steel, you can see it has a nice corrosion resistant chrome finish to it, and if you notice on the sides, the two flat ends here, these built-in wrench flats make it easy to hold the ball in place while you're tightening down the nut.

The nut itself as a zinc plated 1 1/8 inch size hex nut, and it comes with the lock washer for secure mounting to the ball mount. This is designed to fit ball mount platforms that are 3/8 inch to 5/8 inch thick, and when you install this, this shank will just drop through the hole in the platform. After it's through the platform, put your lock washer on there, put your nut on there, and then tighten it down to the correct specified torque. Again, the specs on this, the ball diameter is 1 7/8 inches, which is marked on the top, and the weight capacity is 2,000 pounds gross towing weight capacity, which is also marked on the top. But that should do it for the review on the Curt 1 7/8 inch diameter hitch ball with the 3/4 inch diameter shank, and the 2,000 pound gross towing weight capacity..

Bought this Class I hitchball because the rest of my installation is Class I. Made sense at the time, but the 2” Class II ball is a tighter fit on the U-Haul trailers I rent, and that is probably better for the inevitable rattling. In the end this Curt ball is both good and cheap, and that is a winning combination for me.

by:

It’s a ball, and it works just fine!

by:

Untried as of yet but looks like a quality product. It's difficult to provide an accurate review of a product one just received, but I was very impressed at how quickly my order arrived (days before the expected arrival date), as well as the ease of ordering, the price, and the follow up.

by:

Works great for my e-trailer kayak trailer, also used it for a U-haul tow from Sonoma County California to Gold Beach Oregon.

by:

I moved from Arkansas to Washington State last year and towed a small UHaul with my 2017 Chevy Trax, which has the new hitch that I purchased from you. Everything worked great and I had no trouble whatsoever.

by:

Easy installation. Helps to have two people, however, I installed it alone with the help of jack stands. I highly recommend the Curt receiver. I have another Curt receiver on my 2011 Honda Accord that I also purchased from etrailer.com.

I just finished hauling a load of bush and tree trimmings to the dump with my utility trailer. Attached is a close up photo of the receiver in use.

by:

Received item as advertised in a timely manner. Will certainly do business again as needed in the future. Will certainly recommend.

by:

The cost was cheaper than I could find elsewhere. No frills easy to install.

by:

All the items in my order arrived today. Thanks for your continued follow-up on this order and the speedy shipping once you had the item on hand. I also appreciated the installation video and pictures on etrailer. com. I routinely recommend that my customers reference your website for install instructions and product explanation videos. Keep up the good worK.

by:

Just fine, shipped with the rest of the order and was on time.

by:

Looks to be a quality hitch ball, easy to install.

I only use them a couple times a years, still work fine.

by:

I bought this ball and drawbar to attach to my Polaris Sportsman ATV to pull my trailer around. The drawbar was a perfect fit to raise up the trailer and level it. Well made product, welded nicely to the smaller receiver bar and is perfect for what I needed. I would recommend this product.

by:

The ball started to rust pretty quickly, even though I put a bit of grease on the ball and hitch before I ever used it. Functionally it is still a round hunk of metal that does it's job...it just doesn't look very good.

by:

Shipped and arrived quickly, and appears to be of good quality. A suggestion: like many others, I don't have a socket big enough for the nut, and my torque wrench only goes to 80 ft-lb (the spec calls for 160). I will have to go to a local garage and have them tighten the ball onto the ball mount. I would have been happy to throw eTrailer a couple of bucks or so to have them do this for me when they filled the order. Please consider offering this service.

by:

Nice quality 1-7/8" hitch ball with short shank that is long enough for the ball mount, but does not hang below the nut by much.

by:

This ball is made in China not USA as advertised. Steve did take care of it when I called and said he would have specs changed. All in all a good place to shop hopefully they will get another manufacturer for ball hitches made in USA

by:

Nice quality, easy install, great on line directions and light kit, just plug and done

by:

It is a ball. Nice and shiny.
To torque
it, install it on the drawbar, put the drawbar into a hitch, and torque.

by:

The winch and trailer ball seem to be good quality for the price. I’m happy with this purchase. The five stars are for the service I received and the very fast processing and shipping. I’ll be happy to do more business with etrailer for future needs.

by:

These folks have great communication, and the best prices I've been able to find for the products I ordered. When I got the items, the instructions were clear and easy to follow. The kits are complete and have everything needed. I'm quite happy with etrailer.com

by:

This is a very good product but the real story is the fantastic service and support you receive even in a problem install like I had on my Fit. Three people helped me with the semi custom install I needed. Now perfect. Repeat customer, second install great products and company

by:

It works well and is as described so it fit perfectly. What more can one want from a hitch ball? lol.

by:

I have had this ball for a year and it still works great. I would definitely buy from etrailer.com again.

by:

the whole set up is excellent, the hitch, wiring harness. easy to do.

by:

The Curt ball mount was exactly what I ordered and prompt shipping was really
appreciated

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver and Wiring Harness For a 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid
I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12343 for your 2008 Toyota Camry hybrid. This receiver is going to be the easiest to install as it is custom fit and does not require any drilling to mount the receiver. The T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118482 will allow you to control the lights on small trailers you may tow. • 2018 Hyundai Sonata Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer
The ball mount you get to pair with the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11402 on your 2018 Hyundai Sonata ultimately depends on the height of the trailer coupler that you're towing. A general rule of thumb is that smaller trailers will have a coupler height of about 14" - 16" and when we installed this hitch on a 2018 Sonata (see attached video) we found the hitch height to be 10-1/2" which means we need a minimum rise of 3-1/2" to be in that range. For your application I recommend checking...

Happy Monday to you as well! I do have a potential solution for you. We do not carry a draw bar with a true 0" rise, but what you can do is use the Curt Class 2 Drawbar # C45503. This has a 3/8" rise, and will be the closest thing we have to a 0" rise. You can use it with the 1-7/8" hitch ball # C40001. Keep in mind that with this setup, you are limited to towing 2,000 lbs or less.

  • Will Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver fir 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid
Yes, the Curt # C12169 will fit your 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid. However, I recommend getting the Class III # C13397 instead. In addition to the higher capacity, you will have more available options when it comes to accessories and ball mounts with the 2" receiver. The # C56370 will work as long as you have the AWD model. If you have the front wheel drive model you will need the # C59236 instead. Since it sounds like you will be towing you also need a ball mount. If you stick with the 1-1/4"...

  • Best Trailer Wiring Harness Option for 2004 BMW 325xi Sedan
Since there isn't a plug and play option for your 2004 BMW 325xi Sedan, the best option and the one I recommend is the ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness # 119250KIT. What sets this harness apart from others is that it uses sensors that clamp onto your vehicle's tail light wires to sense the current and transfer it back to the trailer connector. This means you don't have to worry about any potential issues caused by cutting or splicing into your BMW's factory wiring. The built...

  • Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer with a 2006 Audi A3
I cannot go against the trailer manufacturer and tell you that a class I hitch will be fine when they recommend using a class II hitch but that seems like a rather odd request to me as most other trailer manufacturers do not specify the hitch class so long as the vehicle and hitch are both capable of pulling the weight of the trailer. Therefore, I would think you would be okay but again I can't tell you to do something the trailer manufacturer says not to. Unfortunately the only trailer...

We have everything that you need to get towing with your 2009 Buick LaCrosse. For a trailer hitch I recommend the 1-1/4" Class II Curt # C12239 because we have found the Curt trailer hitches typically have better welds and a thicker powder coat than other options. This contributes to a longer lifespan of the trailer hitch which in turn raises the quality of the hitch. Since you're needing to tow a smaller trailer you'll also need wiring to activate the trailer lights and for that I recommend...

If you have or are looking at hitch # C11447 then the ball mount that Curt recommends is # C45520 which is about the same length as C45015 so it would also have enough length. As far as whether or not you can tow a trailer with your 2014 Toyota Prius you will need to check the owners manual or with a Toyota dealer for the final say on that.
