Video Transcript for Curt Hitch Ball - Trailer Hitch Ball - C40004 Review

Today, were going to take a look at the Curt Two Inch Hitch Ball, part number C40004. This chrome ball is two inches in diameter. It has a shank diameter of one inch, a shank length of 2-1/8 inches. It is intended for a ball mount with a draw bar thickness of half an inch to one inch, and has a weight capacity of 6,000 pounds. It comes with everything you see here, including the nut and washer. Were going to show you how you would install this using one of our ball mounts and using our trailer hitch demonstrator.

You would just slide the shank into the ball hole of the ball mount. Also you can see, we have the wrench flats here, to make it easier to tighten. You would take your washer, slide that on first and take your nut, and slide that on, finger-tighten it. Then once youre done with that, you could use the wrench flats here to hold that while using another wrench to tighten that fully, and then youre ready to tow your trailer. That should about do it for our Curt Two Inch Hitch Ball, part number C40004.

Great hitch, but needed a bigger wrench to torque this puppy.

Fit and finish is as expected. It's new and I can't comment on how the chrome finish will hold up . Threads are clean and the nut goes on smoothly. Chrome lock washer compressed nicely with no chrome flaking.

I am very pleased. The guides arrived very quickly -like two days -and were easy to install. I have ordered everything for my used trailer including spare tire, trailer hitch receiver and the ball mount. The ball mount gave me an 8in rise which is what I needed for my Toyota Tacoma. Etrailer follows up and does a great job.

Items arrived quickly. For those using the Curt C45070 ball mount on a Toyota Sienna (2013), flipped over for rise, there is about 3/4 clearance between the bumper cover and the reinforcement web on the back of the ball mount.

For the same sized ball with a 3/4 inch diameter shank thats 2-1/8 inches in length, youd want to use # A-82.

  • What Size Socket is Needed for the Nut on the Curt 2 Inch Hitch Ball 40004
The 2" Hitch Ball - 1" Diameter x 2-1/8" Long Shank - Chrome - 6,000 lbs # C40004 will use a 1-1/2 inch socket like # ALL643210 or a wrench. If you aren't using a torque wrench, you will need to make sure that lock washer is fully compressed to ensure that nut has been tightened enough.

  • Height of Curt 2 Hitch Ball # C40004
I went out to our warehouse to take a look at the Curt 2" Hitch Ball # C40004 that you referenced and I measured a height of 2-3/4" from the mounting base to the top of the ball. I have attached an image to assist. If this doesn't provide the height you need we also have the 2" ball available with an additional 1" rise with part # C40033 or an additional 2" rise with # C40034. These rise measurements would be added to the 2-3/4" height mentioned above.

  • Does Hitch Ball Height Factor in to Determining Rise/Drop Calculation for Picking Out Ball Mount
When determining rise you don't need to factor in the height of the hitch ball unless it's a high rise ball. The rise calculation is done by taking the measurement from the top of the hitch opening down to the ground and comparing it to the distance from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler when sitting level. In relation to the ball mount the dimension would be from the bottom of the ball mount platform to the top of the shank of the ball mount like in the picture I attached. An...

To determine what size hitch ball you will need to pull your custom flat bed trailer, you will just need to look at the coupler on the trailer. Typically, the size hitch ball needed will be stamped into the coupler's metal housing or listed on a safety sticker. Once you find the hitch ball size you need, you will also need to check the ball shank diameter to ensure that it will fit the ball hole on your ball mount. Lastly, you will just choose a hitch ball that has at least a 6,000 pound...

  • Are Safety Chains Required When Towing a Trailer or is the Hitch Ball and Trailer Coupler Enough
When towing a trailer, you will always need safety chains or cables as required by law. This is so if the trailer coupler pops off the ball on your step bumper for some reason, it is still connected to the tow vehicle via the safety chains or cables until you can stop and remedy the problem. I recommend getting a couple of 27 inch Long Safety Chains with 11/16 inch Hook, # 2118-605-04. With these chains installed, you will not have to worry about losing your trailer or getting a ticket! • Choosing Correct Ball Mount for Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer Towed by 2016 Lexus RX 450h
The linked article on choosing a ball mount explains the measurement process we use, and you're correct that Yakima references the top of the coupler while we use the bottom. You'll measure from the ground up to the top of the level trailer's coupler, and from the ground to the top of the receiver opening. The difference between these is the amount of rise you need, about 3- inches. You can use fixed ball mount # 4285 for 3-inches of rise along with 2-inch ball # A-90. If you like...

  • Ball Mount With 5 Inches of Rise for Trailer Hitch on 2019 Chevy Equinox
Since the Class III Draw-Tite hitch # 76419 on your 2019 Chevy Equinox measures 11 inches to the top of the receiver and the bottom of your utility trailer's coupler is 16 inches you will need a ball mount that gives you 5 inches of rise. For that you can use the Draw-Tite Ball Mount # 40346, which will fit your 2 inch receiver and has plenty of capacity at 6,000 lbs. According to Curt, the # C13900 is a fit for the Nissan Frontier and the small Nissan Pickup that predated it but they don't list the Quest as a fit. I'd recommend using the Curt # C13078 Class III hitch which is specifically designed for your 2017 Quest. If you'll be using the hitch for towing purposes, you'll also need the # C56342 trailer wiring harness, a ball mount like # 40346 (use in the rise position) and a 1-7/8 inch ball like # 19261 or a 2 inch ball like # C40004. For these reasons it's really not going to be a good choice. What I recommend doing is using a regular rise/drop ball mount with a 6" drop like the Draw-Tite # 40346, which fits in a 2" receiver and uses hitch balls with 1" shank diameters. • Recommended 6 Inch Drop Ball Mount with Extended Length for a 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver
I recommend using the Curt Ball Mount part # D-28 which has a 6" drop. We do not have a 2" ball mount that offers exactly 6-1/2" of drop with an extended shank but since the vehicle will squat a bit while attached to the trailer, the 1/2" difference will not be an issue for you. This ball mount slides into a 2" receiver tube opening and works with hitch balls that have a 1" diameter shank.
