Note: This hitch ball is not designed for use with weight-distribution systems. There is not enough clearance below a typical weight distribution head for the scale portion of this ball to attach without interfering with the system's spring bars.
This Weigh Safe hitch ball has an easy-to-use, built-in scale that measures your trailer's tongue weight every time you tow. If the scale indicates that your tongue weight is too low or too high, you can adjust it before you head out so that you can complete your journey with peace of mind, knowing that your setup is safe. And towing trailers with different coupler sizes is a breeze thanks to the magnetic, clamp-on 2-5/16" ball adapter.
Tongue weight (TW) refers to the weight that the fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch ball of the tow vehicle. Tongue weight is typically 10 percent - and should not exceed 15 percent - of your gross trailer weight. For example, a 10,000-lb trailer should have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. You can adjust the tongue weight of your trailer by removing or adding cargo, or redistributing the load on the trailer. The tongue weight should not exceed the capacity of your tow vehicle, your hitch, or any of your towing components.
Simply put, too little tongue weight can cause trailer sway and too much tongue weight can cause the tow vehicle to perform poorly. You may have difficulty steering, gaining traction, or braking when driving a setup that has too much weight pushing down on the rear of the vehicle. Ultimately, towing with an improper tongue weight can cause you to lose control of your vehicle or cause your trailer to separate from the vehicle.
The Weigh Safe hitch ball's built-in scale signals you to adjust your load before you hit the road, resulting in a much safer and enjoyable towing experience. Before this hitch ball, gauging your trailer's tongue weight was a hassle. You had to rely on inefficient bathroom scales, make a trip to the weigh station, or purchase a separate tongue weight scale. But with the Weigh Safe ball's built-in scale, measuring your tongue weight is as easy as coupling your trailer to your ball mount. Simply attach the hitch ball to your ball mount and hook up your trailer. The weight of your trailer will push down on the hitch ball, which in turn pushes down on an internal hydraulic piston that sits on a bed of oil. When the piston drops into the oil, the pressure reading is sent out to the scale.
A clamp-on adapter is included that increases the diameter of the hitch ball to 2-5/16". The adapter allows you to easily switch hitch ball diameters so that you can tow trailers with different coupler sizes. Both the 2" and 2-5/16" hitch balls are tested and rated at 10,000 lbs GTW with a 1,500-lb TW.
Adjusting the hitch ball diameter with the clamp-on adapter is fast and easy. Open the adapter by pulling apart each side along the hinge. Then place the adapter over the top of the 2" ball and clamp it shut. Magnets inside the adapter will keep it in place. To remove, simply pull the sides apart and lift it off of the ball.
Installing the Weigh Safe hitch ball is simple. Insert the shank of the hitch ball through the hole in your ball mount and thread on the included lock washer. Next attach the female fastening nut, which includes the scale, to the hitch ball shank. Then tighten down the female fastening nut.
Superior Stainless Steel Construction
This Weigh Safe hitch ball is constructed of solid stainless steel offering far greater protection against rust and corrosion than standard steel hitch balls that are only painted or plated on the surface. The stainless steel shank is heat treated to increase its overall toughness, shear strength, and tensile strength so that you can safely tow up to 10,000 lbs.
The Weigh Safe hitch ball meets VESC V-5 regulations and is SAE J684 certified. These regulatory bodies - the Vehicle Equipment Safety Commission and the Society for Automotive Engineers - create standards for the design, construction, and performance of automotive and towing accessories. Weigh Safe has had this hitch ball thoroughly tested in simulation to ensure that it complies with these standards. The result is a strong, safe, sturdy product that is built to last.

Stainless steel construction resists rust and corrosion.Been using this for a year now and it is a bullet proof way to get loaded up safely and moving down the road. I am using this for towing my $70,000 Camaro RS/SS Convertible back an forth from California to Colorado, so it has a important role. Outstanding solution to proper weight distribution on the trailer for large and medium loads.
I purchased one of the first 'off the line' and was truly impressed, as the other reviewer stated, how the material and quality of workmanship stood out. I had great expectations....however.....in practice, the Weigh Safe mount with the built in scale didn't pan out. At hook up, it read my tongue weight perfectly. I do not recommend it's use with weight distribution hook ups including those with anti-sway. I have a Reese system that uses the trunnion design and a friction anti-sway.....which crushed the dial base and destroyed everything but the ball itself during a turn. This caveat to not use with W/D is now on the etrailer.com site where the experts answer questions, but I am dissapointed that the manufacturer didn'ttake the responsibility to have this in their marketing of the product up front. My recommendation for those with a W/D hitch purchase the separate tongue weight scale.
Its great. I tow heavy with a little truck and this works great, just the right amount of weight on the truck
It makes it very easy to get your load balance where it needs to be just move your load while watching the scale gauge you can get the right amount of tongue weight which makes your trailer pull correct and safe
Never could get the scale to read anywhere close to accurate. Re-adjusted according to directions repeatedly. I rarely feel like a product is a waste of money but this was.
Sweet setup ! Now there will be no question as to how much tongue weight I have. My trailer weighs around 3500 lbs and the tongue weight was 500 lbs !! Ahh, a little out of line I would say. The tongue weight should be around 400 lbs. I just bought the trailer which has two large propane tanks and two 12 volt batteries right behind the tongue. I didn't even have the 40 gallon water tank filled. Major refitting job ahead. Thanks to Ian at etrailer for all of his help and I needed some special help and Ian got me through to weigh safe and the help I needed to finish my job. I also used a vise to hold the base and a pair of channel locks to finish tightening.
Great idea but it only worked two times by the third time this scale has stuck at 1100 pounds tongue weight even though I take it off the trailer and stored inside the garage between uses
Nice ball, having two sizes in one unit is nice. Tongue weight gauge is nice but does not seem to respond to my tongue of 175 lbs. I've followed the directions and adjusted the setting as written but still does not seem to work as well as I thought it would.
It’s a great idea but the scaling isn’t really practical for a 3000 pound trailer.
Best way to go for real time convenient tongue weight measurement. Used to tow RV trailer using clamshell for larger tow ball size. Instructions very clear on setting “0” on the scale. Accurate to within 50 lbs. Need to check/adjust set screw for “0” prior to every tow as set screw does loosen after about 10 tows, but adjusting “0” very easy so minor inconvenience in exchange for knowing tongue weight which is a critical piece of information in setting up your rig for towing.
This is the fourth or fifth order I have placed with eTrailer. Each time the service has been prompt. The items have always been as advertised. This hitch scale is to help with loading a medium sized tractor and its attachments onto a trailer. Since the weight and position of the tractor on the trailer varies depending on the configuration of the attachments, this scale lets me get the tongue weight correct for different loads.
I would have given it 5 stars; however, I don't like the fact that the 2 5/16 ball converter clamps over the 2" ball. It's held in place with magnets and can be easily lost or stolen if it's left on without a trailer hooked up. Other than that, it seems like an accurate scale. I only use the hitch to measure tongue weight. I don't usually tow with it because I'm concerns about environmental conditions ruining the gauge.
Appears to be an excellent product. I like being able to see the tongue weight live at any time. Haven’t loaded trailer yet, though.
. I was not happy with the Weigh Safe Hitch Ball. It did not perform as I expected It was very difficult to put together and use when the trailer was attached. As a result, I was not sure how accurate the reading was since the installation did not go well. Right now it is just another hitch ball and not a functional scale.
We use this scale to check out tongue weight before each trip with our camping trailer. We only use it to check tongue weight —not for towing. This ball works best for heavier tongue weights where you can use more of the scale’s indicator range—it starts at around 400 pounds and goes up to about 1200. We shoot for around 450 pounds so we are just able to register a reading which is not in the region where a highly accurate reading can be obtained.
It makes setting up my trailer balance much easier, and considerably safer. My camper weighs 3620 pounds, and this will dial it in within the 9% to 14% tongue weight that I need:)
Super product and great company to do business with. They gave me ful credit on an upgrade as i originally ordered a wrong item. I have been hauling cars, boats and loaded cargo trailers behind a Cayenne so proper tongue weight is important
Since I ordered this (on sale) in November but wouldn't actually need it until April (camping season for us), I went ahead and set it up for a trial run. Set up was a little challenging for me because this requires 2 wrenches at 1.5 inch size. My largest crescent wrench isn't even that big, so I had to use channel locks. Not ideal, but it got the job done. I hooked my travel trailer up and the tongue weight registered 350 lbs, which is about right (no propane tanks or battery, as it it winterized right now). Next, I stood on top of the tongue and it added 200 lbs, which is also about right. So, I'll go ahead a call this device as good as advertised. I'm really looking forward to NOT using the scale and 10 ft bar technique to get my tongue weight in the future. Tongue weight is very important to me as we bring our trailer on cross-country trips over multiple mountain ranges most years. I plan on storing this in my garage for the winter along with my other hydraulic items to prevent any seals from failing prematurely due to excessive exposure to the cold. (NOTE: while the product says it can handle 10k lbs tongue weight, I could not find a ball mount that meets the requisite 3/4 inch thick platform and 1 inch hole diameter that handles any greater than 7500lbs - so the ball mount limits my capacity with this. I use weight distribution to haul my 6500 lb travel trailer (loaded weight), but this will work as a back-up in an emergency if my distro hitch fails for some reason)
A must have in determining load distributions of various implements on various trailers! I use it only to calculate load positions once- then tow with conventional ball/hitch to minimize wear and tear on this instrument.
The weigh safe hitch I ordered was well made however from day one the scale never worked, I was very disappointed because it was a great looking hitch. Sorry to tell you this but very unsatisfied.
I just received my Weigh-safe universal tow ball, (extremely fast delivery) and (thought I had a problem) with it. I learned after I called etrailer that operator error must have been an issue, because it was working as advertised when I checked it again. What can I say? . Of significance was E Trailer's response (by Sheila). "We'll fix the issue right away", she said. The problem was obviously me because when I checked again there was no problem. Excellent customer service.
Good quality but was missing directions. Wasn't working at first but realized I had to tighten the allen key screw to calibrate scale to Zero.
High quality product and very innovative making it possible to know for certain what your trailer tongue weight is! Your website for ordering is the best I have seen making it very easy for us “non-nerd” types to place an order and it came very quickly. Thanks - I am a repeat customer.
The ball with built-in scale works perfectly and consistently allows me to load my car trailer with the correct tongue weight. Too much or too little and I reposition the car on the trailer. I highly recommend this product.
It does not give an accurate scale reading. We set it up like the directions say, and the scale is about 200lb. lighter than a brand new set of digital scales show. Not accurate at all.
