Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Extra Long Hitch Receiver Lock Review

What's up everybody. It's AJ with etrailer.com Today we're checking out this locking hitch pin from Jaw Tight. Now this one is an extended one so it's a little bit longer to fit two and a half and three inch hitches. Let's check it out. You put the key in. You should turn it until the lock mechanism pops out.

Then you can separate the pin from the lock. I put the pin through our hitch and ball mount, may need to shake the ball mount a little bit just to get it through there. We'll put our lock on the other side. With the lock mechanism popped out. You can see it's farther back in there so, you know, you can just put this on there, pushing a lot and it's in place.

Looking closer at the lock. It has a smooth finish, and there's not really a grip on it but it's all right, because the lock is big enough easy to grab onto and pull off when you go to unlock it. Nice and easy to grab onto versus your standard hitch pin and clip which are a little bit smaller and harder to get in there and pull that pin out. You're going to hit your hand on the bumper or your ball mount or something like that. Or they get rusty over time and they get even harder to pull out.

This one's nice and easy. To help protect your lock from the elements. It does come with a rubber cap that you can put on there. Now, it's not attached. So you don't have to remember where this is when you have it, but at least it comes with it.

You may notice a little bit of back and forth or just a little bit of gap between the lock and the heads but that's okay because it's meant for a two and a half inch hitch and a three inch hitch. So when you do it on three inch hitch there's gonna be less of a gap, but there's not enough space for anybody getting there and do anything. It's going to be a great help to turn and keep your ball mount protected. So overall it gets the job done. It'll definitely lock our ball mount into our hitch. There's a few things that I'm not a huge fan of, the cap not being attached is kind of annoying. Cause I'm afraid I'm going to lose it. Or just going to fall off. The lock mechanism is a little iffy. You turn it. Sometimes it pops up. Sometimes it doesn't, you know, I'll turn it left or right. It looks like it's popping out now. So that part it's just iffy and then the whole lock rotates. So if it's not up against the hitch exactly, you're going to turn the lock when you're trying to get that mechanism, you're going to kind of have to hold onto that, turn it to get it to pop out. I think there's just some better hitch locks out there that have the attached dust cover and a better lock mechanism that we offer that you could probably check out. But that's going to do it for a look at the Jaw Tight hitch pin lock. Hope this helped..

My new B&W drawbar and ball assembly arrived today for my 2020 F250 Super Duty. It is a perfect complement to a great truck. The receiver lock completes the package.

See the attached before and after picture.

by:

I find this lock Does a good job securing my hitch however it is difficult to engage with the key. Could be more user-friendly.

I have stopped using this product. Too hard to lock. Not a fan.

Can you please elaborate on what you mean by it being too hard to lock?

by:

Had this a year and many towing miles now. It's as good as the day I got it - lock still works perfectly. My F250 has a 3" receiver which has a 2 1/2" adapter, which, in turn, has a 2" adapter - pulling an 8,000lb trailer. This adapter setup has bent all of the "cheap" hitch locks I've tried, but this one is solid.

Still going strong and still straight.

by:

Kind of does what it says, but the lock portion falls out of the outer tube when unlocked as it's missing a retaining screw to keep the lock in. I've since learned there are keyed-alike locking pins by weigh safe so will try to get one of those. Returning is more work than keeping and paying attention when unlocking but this rating suffered.

by:

Used this ONCE on a trip this summer. Came home and found the locking end fell right off into my hand. The ball detents had collapsed and were not secure in the slightest. Had the pin backed out, it would have been a very bad day for my family and anyone behind us on the road. I cannot believe these are not quality controlled better with the massive liability that comes along with such a critical component. This thing is JUNK. Stay away from this part.

by:

Arrived broken. Could not get lock to latch over pin. Requested replacement.

by:

As advertised. I have a 3" receiver and needed a locking pin that would work on that 3" receiver. It worked with about a half an inch to spare. Easy to unlock if the hitch needs to be removed.

by:

Plenty long enough for a 3" receiver hitch. Seems to work fine. I've only taken it out a couple times in the past year.

by:

Worked great but weigh safe had thier own keyed alike looking pin to match their flip over ball

by:

Worked even better once lubricated.

by:

Perfect fit for the stock 3” receiver on my Ford F-350. I made the mistake of leaving the locking pin in the receiver over our Canadian winter and I thought it would be rusted shut but it still works like new. Great product and quick advice and delivery from etrailer!

Still working great a year later. Perfect for the 3 receiver on my F350.

I was having trouble finding a hitch pin long enough to fit my class 5 receiver on my 2011 Silverado. This one fit the bill perfectly. Etrailer support was very helpful and shipping was quick thank you very much

Works as expected

by:

This is a well made lock and fits my 3" receiver unlike a lot of other locks of this design which are too short for the bigger receiver.

by:

Low profile. Did not work upon receipt.

I am sorry to hear that this item did not work for you. I have sent your information over to our customer service department for them to get in touch with you about the lock.

by:

This product does what it's designed too, that's why I gave it three stars. However, it did not fit my needs...it works better on narrower ball mounts. I have a B&W tow and stow three ball mount and need a hitch receiver lock that's about 1/2" to 1" longer to fit it.

by:

I finally found a locking pin long enough to go through my hitch. I have a 2” sleeve inside a 2.5” sleeve inside a 3” receiver. The OD is too big for most locking pins.

This was my only choice I could find so I would have been happy with just about anything that fit. This way exceeded my expectations. The locking mechanism is super smooth and it has a rubber o-ring that keeps dirt and debris out of places it shouldn’t be.

by:

I received the Draw-Tite Hitch receiver Lock-extra long flush design #BD580412 in a very timely fashion. I ordered it because your web site stated it had a 4 inch span and I wanted to lock my Roadmaster #050 Roll-away to my trailer hitch. When I received it I read the Manufacturers packaging and it said it had a 3 1/2 inch span.I was fuming but I decided to cut it out of it's packaging, put it together and then measure the span.To my relief the span is actually 4 inches not 3 1/2. Please pass that on to the manufacturer. The product seems very well built.

by:

I kept finding this hitch lock unlocked so I tried locking and pulling/twisting snd it pops open every time within 3 seconds. It seems the hiway was putting enough vibration to the lock to pop the locking mechanism up. I have 4 of these two extra long for 2.5 receiver and two for 2”

by:

The Bulldog Extra Long Hitch receiver lock was just the length I needed for my 2017 Ford F350. It is a quality receiver lock and suits my needs perfectly. I highly recomend this lock for those of you that need more clearance than the 3 5/8ths locks that are on the market. My compliments to etrailer.com for carrying this product and their super fast shipping.

by:

I bought this B&W hitch to be a exact fit for my truck. This is the second B&W that I have purchased. Both have been well built. Best adjustable hitches that I have ever owned. Very Happy With them
etrailer had the best price of anyone locally. Ordered Saturday, I received an Email Sunday that my order was Processed, and that it was ready for shipping. It arrived four days later. Thank You Will order from you again.

by:

The hitch lock seems durable; however, time will tell how it holds up. The process in purchasing it was effortless, but the shipping took longer than expected based on other reviews of items that had super fast shipping from etrailer.com. This was purchased for my 2017 F250, which has the heavy duty (wider) receiver. It is plenty long enough to fit the new receivers.

by:

I had a hard time finding a lock long enough to fit the factory hitch on my 2007 Tundra. This one fits with room to spare.

by:

Needed a locking pin for my 3" hitch. Couldn't locate one anywhere.
A person told me about etrailer, went to web site, there it was. Ordering was very easy.
With standard shipping, was at my home in 4 days. Fits perfect!

Thanks, Randy

by:

Works great!

by:

It did not last for 8 months. The key cylinder (the part that the key goes in) came loose and would not lock or unlock. It would just spin around in the housing. I wound up having to cut the pin in order to get it off of the truck, despite keeping the black dust cap on the pin.

  • Does Draw-Tite Hitch Receiver Lock Have a Weight Capacity
Hitch receiver locks such as the Draw-Tite Hitch Receiver Lock - Extra Long - Flush Design # BD580412 don't actually have a specific weight capacity so they can be used for whatever capacity your other equipment is rated for. The reason for this is because the lock is positioned inside the hitch, which means the downward force of the tongue weight isn't on the lock, it is on the ball mount, hitch ball, receiver and coupler. This is why no trailer hitch locks or trailer hitch pins are rated...

  • Does Bulldog Hitch Receiver Lock # BD580412 Have Weight Capacity
Hitch pins and hitch pin locks like the part # BD580412 that you referenced don't actually bear any weight when used with a ball mount so they don't have weight capacities. The downward force of the tongue weight of the trailer is so great that the ball mount is pinned into the hitch so hard that none of the weight is put on the hitch pin. This pin lock will work great with your 3 inch hitch on your Ford truck.

  • Best Locking Hitch Pin for a 3 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver
Yes, the Bulldog Hitch Receiver Lock part # BD580412 is a locking hitch pin that will fit the 3" trailer hitch receiver on your 2017 Ford F-350. This hitch pin has a dual self-locking design with a flush look. It is constructed of stainless steel and is 5/8" in diameter. The end of the pin of the Draw-Tite Hitch Receiver Lock part # BD580412 that has the black cover holds the locking mechanism. It would be possible for a thief to drill put the lock if they wanted to. The lock is a theft deterrent but not theft proof. We have not had any customer complaints about it breaking over time. The pin length on BOLT lock # BL7023585 won't be long enough for a 3 inch trailer hitch. Right now they do not make one that will be long enough but who knows what the future holds. If the 3 inch hitches take off in popularity then we might see some accessories like BOLT locks made for them.

This is the longest hitch lock we have available and it is designed to fit 3 inch hitches like what you have. It features a usable length of 3-1/2 inches. • Recommended Hitch Reducer and Lock for Thule Bike Rack
Starting with the hitch adapter for the 2 inch hitch receiver on your vehicle, I actually recommend going with the Brophy Hitch Reducer # HT02 instead of the Tow Ready # 80300 that you referenced. The reason for this is that the Tow Ready adapter, when in use, is going to reduce the tongue weight capacity of your trailer hitch by 50%. Depending on the weight of your bike rack and bikes, this option may result in you overloading the capacity of the trailer hitch. For example, if the hitch...

Since this ball has a 1-1/4 inch diameter shank, it is compatible with the # 40702.
