The installation is rated a 10 out of 10 for difficulty. I was hesitant to tackle it as I have never removed a bumper cover before. Luckily there were several [online] videos of my VW Sportwagen on how to remove the bumper cover. The removal turned out to be easy and nothing was damaged in the process. Bumper cover removal is a one man job. The Curt hitch fit perfectly and no trimming of the bumper cover is required. I would recommend a second person to assist with installing the trailer hitch receiver. If you don't have a helper, I would use some all thread rod to help hold everything in position. I'm no mechanic. If I did it, you can do it!

Easy to install with zero modification to the vehicle. Took about 2 hours.

Things I found useful:
Use a plastic trim-panel removal tool to release the bumper clips without scratching the bumper or the rear quarter. A screwdriver will scratch the painted surfaces.

Ask a friend to help you bolt up the hitch-bumper sandwich. This was tricky to do alone.

Ordering this product through eTrailer was a satisfying one, including an informative and user-friendly web site, quick and courteous pickup of the Q&A telephone line, and professionalism of the staff.
Since the mechanical ability to install this hitch was above my pay grade, I had a local auto-body facility install the Curt Class I hitch on my 2017 VW Golf Alltrack SE; expect to pay around $150 for this job. The mechanic stated that the installation instructions provided in the delivered package included excellent diagrams and pictures for the mechanic to follow.
The hitch looks and performs very well as a base for my Swingman XC2 bike rack!
(I opted for a trailer-hitch-based option for my VW bike-rack needs for the Alltrack, as I unsuccessfully tried the roof-rack-based VW bike holder on my old 2010 SportWagen but had issues lifting and safely securing the bike (especially in high winds)).

Great. Installation notes:

On
a 2015 Golf TDI Sportwagen, there are 6 T25 screws in each rear wheel well. You need to remove the rear most 4 of those, 3 into bumper cover support frame, and one oriented 90 degrees offset from the others, into rear fender. This is much easier to do if you jack up the car and remove the rear wheels.

If you are working by yourself, it helps to have jack stands to hold the rear bumper while you remove the screws, and to hold the trailer hitch and rear bumper when you install them together. See picture.

You can squeeze the 4 wire trailer socket through the square hole for either tail light (the hole is larger than the socket on the tail light), and wrap the flat 4 wire bundle in electrical tape where it crosses that hole below the socket on the tail light. After you reinstall the bumper cover, when you reinstall the tail light, just make the plastic thumb screw as tight as you can with a flat screwdriver to compress the foam gasket over the flat 4 wire bundle.

This was my second Curt hitch requiring installation under the bumper and it was just about as smooth and easy as the last one. It's got great clearance (more than the bumper itself) and perfect for installing a bike rack.

The one thing I will say is that for the 4 T15 screws, they are plastic screws and the head is likely to strip or break when unscrewed. Instead of unscrewing them, use a nail punch or small phillips head screwdriver to push them out from the back, and then use lube or grease before you reinstall them.

Very happy with the hitch. Went with the 1.25” because I’m only using it for a bike carrier and not towing. Curt hitch required no cutting of the bumper panel for a 2017 VW Alltrack, which was preferred. No alignment problems at all when installing and bolts fit perfectly. Will use strainer for any other needs!

Delivery was timely and the packaging was secure - not easy when shipping heavy steel. Install was straightforward, and the instructions are good. Some of the pictures were hard to discern in black and white, but there is a color version online. It requires a little patience, and a second set of hands is needed for about 5 minutes of the install. My 10 year old son was recruited for that job. When installing this on a VW, highly recommend getting a couple extra plastic fasteners for the bumper, the ones with a T15 screw head. On my vehicle, two were on so tight that I stripped them attempting to unfasten, and I had to drill them out. I bought replacements that weren’t OEM at local auto parts store. Also, if you want to avoid removing wheels, get a ratchet with a short T25 bit. I had a 1/4” bit with a 3/8” ratchet with a step down attachment for 1/4” - wouldn’t fit; I had to go buy a small 1/4” ratchet. Hopefully I’ll save someone a few extra trips to the parts store.

Installed my hitch today on my 2018 VW Golf Alltrack. Took about 3 hrs for the install as I didn't take off the wheels which made reinstalling the screws in the wheel well (I have mud flaps on mine) mor difficult. I was all thumbs!! Didn't have to cut the bumper fascia. I just took off the silver trim on the bottom of the bumper cover first which made maneuvering back on the car mich easier the snapped the trim back on afterwards. Looks great and pretty OEM on the car.

Product looks of great quality. Install on my 2017 VW Sportwagen S TSI required a small cut on the bumper plastic, where the factory cut is. I basically extended the factory cut with 1/3 of an inch, so that the hitch end passes through the cut. Other than that, installation is easy and the hitch looks great on the VW!

Very happy with my hitch - just installed it last night and it sits beautifully under the rear bumper (it doesn't extend the length of the car at all). Moreover, when my original hitch was on backorder, etrailer's customer service was super helpful in switching to a different hitch that was specific to my car while making it easy to cancel the original order. I was able to receive the hitch in time for my trip :)

Fits like a glove. BUT instructions could be better, it’s very hard to see which bolts get which washers . Hardest part was running wire thru interior to battery. Here are the pictures of my 2017 Alltrack.

Install time was right on point, took exactly two hours and that includes rummaging through the garage to get extra tools that I forgot. For the Alltrack there's no cutting, but I recommend getting a plastic pry bar/trim removal tool to help remove the bumper.

Looks like a factory hitch on my 2019 VW Golf Alltrack! Install went smooth, just took it slow and steady. I was hesitant at first but definitely doable with some patience and an extra set of hands. The product itself is solid and well made. I plan to use this hitch mostly for a 3-bike tray carrier, and it seems sturdier than my previous round-bar hitch also from Curt. This 5-star rating is more for the instructional video than the product. The steps and information were super easy to follow, complete with tool references for the torx bits and needed socket sizes. Without rushing, I was able to complete the install in about 2 hours by following along and being careful to not scratch or break anything. Thanks for the video!

This is the third time I've installed a Curt hitch. The other two were on a 2014 Jetta Sportwagen and a 2014 Honda CRV. My 2014 Jetta Sportwagen TDI has been swapped out for a 2015 Golf Sportwagen (a.k.a. GSW) compliments of VW, thus the need for the third hitch. I was a bit intimidated by the need to remove the entire rear bumper cover but there are some fantastic YouTube videos showing the bumper removal process ( just search on "Installing a Trailer Hitch on a Golf Sportwagen 2015" in YouTube) so I took the plunge. I took my time and the process went pretty smoothly.

A few comments regarding my experience.

Removing the bumper cover. Both the Curt instructions and the YouTube video suggest that you can pull on the bumper side pieces to get the clips to release. This did work but if I were to do it again I'd use a tool (an old credit card or other trim panel tool) to release the sides. The cover has a top edge with a series of rectangular cutouts that fit over plastic clips. Even with gentle tugging two of the cutout edges broke (one on either side, in about the same position) during the removal. This isn't a big deal since there are a bunch of these cutouts in a row along the panel edge so there was no issue fitting the panel back in place, but I'd have preferred a "perfect" removal. Also I recommend raising the rear and removing both rear tires to get access to the screws inside the rear wheel wells. They're T25 Torx screws and there's very limited clearance inside the wheel wells with the tires mounted. With the tires off you can use a power screwdriver to get at the four T25 screws inside each wheel well and speed the process along.

As an additional note, as I was removing the T25 screws at some point a pair of plastic nuts fell out from under the bumper cover, one nut from each side of the car, and I was never quite able to tell which of the screws needed these nuts. All the screws seemed to bite when I put things back together. But I still have the nuts so maybe someone else knows where they belong?

Models with driver assistance package. For GSW models with the driver assistance package, there's an additional cable that attaches inside the passenger side bumper cover for the object-proximity sensors mounted inside the cover. I suspected this would be the case but found that the cover could be detached and moved to gain access to the steel bumper beam without detaching this cable. In retrospect it probably would have been better to detach this cable prior to the cover removal. There's a removable plate beneath the rear passenger side that's held in place by two T25 screws that attach the cover (that you need to remove anyway) and another pair of plastic nuts on the inner side of this panel that attach to studs on the undercarriage. With this panel removed (prior to removing the bumper cover) you have access to this cable, though I didn't actually do this or go looking for the relevant connector to detach this cable). The Curt 11422 instructions make no mention of this possibility.

Mounting the hitch and bumper beam. A couple of things here make installing the hitch/beam a bit easier. As the YouTube video shows, if you have a "suitably long" bolt, you can run the bolt from the back side of the the threaded beam bolt holes in the GSW frame so that they protrude an inch or so out from the frame to provide a temporary guide-pin to hold the hitch/beam in place while attaching other bolts. I used the outside lower bolt holes for this (fortunately the bolt holes go clear thru the frame and though there's a rubber seal on the back side you can move this aside to thread the bolt from the back). The bolts included with my hitch included two lengths and the longer ones, when run from the back side, worked as guides as described above. Inexplicably these longer ones were not threaded all the way to the head which meant they couldn't be screwed in all the way to the bolt head, but even so they still provided an inch or so of protruding guide. I also found it helpful to wrap a couple of bungee cords around the hitch and beam towards the middle to keep them bound together as one when jockeying into place on the frame. With a wedge (rolled up newspaper) placed between the hitch receiver and beam and bungee cords the pair was kept pretty well in place. The Curt instructions don't have these suggestions.

The packing invoice from Curt actually listed two distinct sets of bolts (3 of M8 - 1.25 x 25; 4 of M8 - 1.25 x 35) but it was not very clear where these were supposed to be used, or why? The picture suggested that the longer bolts be used on the four outside holes while the shorter ones go on the inside but I couldn't see any reason for this? The bolts I received also seem to differ from the hardware shown in the product images on the eTrailer page for C11422. Their picture shows 7 bolts of equal length with 7 conical toothed washers. Instead, I received 3 conical washer and 4 steel washers + lock washers combinations? I don't think any of this matters, just curious about the discrepancy.

The hitch/beam bolt holes aligned PERFECTLY and I had NONE of the issues other reviewers have reported when bolting the hitch/beam in place. When putting the bumper cover back into place over the hitch, I did find it expedient to cut away a bit of the plastic cover on the bottom side around the hitch. I use a naked hacksaw blade (work gloved hand) to cut out a small flap, though with sufficient jockeying it may have been possible to get the cover up and over the hitch without needing to cut anything. Since this is completely hidden on the underside it doesn't really matter, but the Curt instructions I received make no mention of needing to cut anything, and this may actually be the case. (The on-line Curt instructions do provide a trim diagram for the 4MOTION vehicles).

The hitch on the car is nearly invisible. I love it. My next task is to install the wiring harness.

I like that this hitch does not require any cutting of the rear bumper, and it tucks up nicely under the bumper.

However, I wish that Curt would pay attention to all the reviews about poor fit. 3 of the 7 bolt holes don't line up with the bolt holes on the car. If you don't have the ability to enlarge elongated holes in steel, stay away from this hitch.

The instructions are pathetic. Fortunately, there are several great videos on YouTube. You WILL need a helper to hold the bumper and crash bar in place while trying to get bolts into place. Speaking of bolts, the supplied bolts seem too short until you get everything torqued. Then they are the exactly correct length. I would recommend buying a longer bolt to help get the hitch and crash bar into place.

The hitch arrived nicely packaged by etrailer.

Easy install. It went so smoothly that I didn't even think to take any pictures. I did add blue loctite (medium strength) to the fasteners to help reduce the likelihood of needing to re-torque the bolts. It definitely looks good after the install and will be ready for the first towing adventure in about two weeks. I would recommend separating the lower plastic (black) trim piece from the painted bumper before re-installing the bumper. This made everything work really nicely for snapping the painted portion back in and then it was a breeze to slide the trim piece around the hitch and reconnect it to the painted portion.

Installation
of this hitch was fairly straight forward and went smoothly other than the two bottom outside mounting holes were about half an inch off from the frame holes. This required some drilling to enlarge the holes on the hitch receiver to match up with the frame. That is my only complaint though as the hitch fits perfectly on the vehicle and comes out through the already cut hole in the bottom of the bumper cover. When a hitch isn't in it the receiver is very non-intrusive and does not cause any clearance issues.

One tip on the install which I felt the instructions don't do a very good job of mentioning: The bumper cover has a bottom section (where they receiver comes through) that can be removed very easily. Removing this made reinstalling the bumper cover much easier and then the bottom part could fitted around the receiver and snapped back into place as the final step of the install process.

I was on the fence about installing this myself on my 2016 Golf SportWagen SE. After reviewing a few videos I decide to take the plunge and now glad I did. It was not a difficult project and took about 2 hours. The hitch fits perfect and looks great!

My tips:

Raising the back of the car makes it easier to get to many of the screws. I backed mine up on some ramps.

Leave the wheels on and use a T25 torx bit in vise grips to loosen the some of the screws in the wheel well. I was able to use a regular T25 screw driver for the top screw. The screws come out easy and can be spun by hand once loose.

Get over the fear of breaking a snap or two when pulling the bumper off. I broke a couple and in retrospect see no way I could have avoided doing so. The bumper cover will snap securely back on even if your removal is not perfect.

Put a couple of long bolts in the back side of the bottom holes so that they stick out and use them for temporary supports when placing the hitch / crash bar combination on the car. Once you pin it in place with a couple of bolts can take the temp supports out.

    We have not yet heard about any issues with the Curt trailer hitch # C11422 interfering with the Accident Avoidance sensors on the 2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen. The hitch mounts in line with the rear bumper beam, see instruction link, and only the hitch receiver is visible so there really isn't a way that it could interfere.

    We have the Curt hitch part # C11422 which is a fit for your 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack and would allegedly only require trimming if you had the 4Motion model. If you didn't have the 4Motion model this would not require any trimming at all. We have heard of people installing the hitch on 4Motion vehicles and it not requiring trimming like in the picture I attached.
