Order received quicker than expected and in good shape. The instructions are straight forward and easy to follow. Few tools required and took less than thirty minutes to organize and complete the installation. Fit was perfect and required no alterations to my vehicle. All that is visible is the receiver opening which results in a very minor change to the aesthetics of the vehicle.

Still satisfied with the purchase. No problems since the installation. The powder coat finish is holding up well in spite of exposure to road salt during the Wisconsin winter

The quality of the hitch is excellent nothing to complain about bolts right in. The only issue that I had was the muffler was extremely close to the hitch and caused some rattling noise when it would rub (maybe because my vehicle has the 2.4l engine). I had to modify the last exhaust hanger. I removed the hanger stop on the car side which allowed me to slide the rubber hanger forward, giving the muffler a lot more space. Also, to avoid the rubber hanger from moving back out of place I used some exhaust wrap and a metal zip tie to lock it in place. You will need a file to file down the spot weld on the metal hanger and an exhaust wrap kit. I hope this helps if you all are having the same issue.

Installed within an hour of delivery. Bolted on easily. Did not need to raise the vehicle. Used 19mm socket on the supplied bolts. Installed on vehicle within the hour of delivery. etrailer responded immediately when original hitch was unavailable.

Very good! Used it for an e-bike rack. Very sturdy, really great.

by:

Exactly as expected. Great product. However, on my Vibe the exhaust is right up against the hitch. This causes an awful sound when driving. Not sure how to solve the issue other than removing the hitch. Great product but really does not fit correctly it rubs badly. Any advice or tips would be very welcome. Please help?!?!!

The exhaust system at the rear of your Vibe is attached to the vehicle using rubber isolators and easily bendable exhaust hangers. Because of this, the actual position of the exhaust system can vary a bit from vehicle to vehicle. When the hitch is installed, due to the fact that its firmly bolted to the vehicle its position will not vary from vehicle to vehicle. The large tolerances in the exhaust system are what can allow the rattle to occur. In other words, its not the fault of the hitch or its design. Youll just need to create a bit more space between the hitch and the exhaust. The good news is that this is a common occurrence that is easily remedied by slightly bending the exhaust hanger. Ive linked you to a help article that addresses how to easily fix the rattle.

by:

The quality of the product seems great. It installed very easily. The issue I'm having is that it fits so tightly on my Toyota Matrix that it actually bumps up against the muffler and causes an annoying and loud vibration. I'm constantly checking my rearview mirror to see if there is someone on a Harley Davidson right behind me.

This can happen when there is a tight trailer hitch fit, but there are some simple solutions. I have linked a help article that covers some ways to correct exhaust rattle from your trailer hitch.

by:

Never could get the muffler to stop rattling against the hitch, even after trying the suggestions.

Still rattles. Im concerned this will develop a hole somewhere but I cant see it to confirm.

My etrailer hitch was pretty easy to install, even with having to clean up the factory frame threads on my older vehicle. The hitch is a great quality product and I am very likely to purchase another hitch from etrailer when I purchase my next vehicle.

2009 Pontiac Vibe

Etrailer was topnotch. The website was so easy to navigate making choosing the right hitch a snap.I installed the unit on my 09 Vibe just 3 days after placing my order. The hitch type bike rack now has a home. Thanks etrailer!

2009 Toyota Matrix

Fix perfectly on my 2009 Toyota Matrix. The only issue I had was with the bolts going into the frame. The bolts that came with the hitch were not tapered (a little smaller) on the end of the bolt. After trying unsuccessfully for a while, I finally used a file to taper the first couple of threads on all 4 bolts. Once the bolts were good, the rest of the install was no problem at all. Great fit on the frame and looks good on car. Thanks!

2009 Pontiac Vibe

I have installed hundreds of hitches and this one was the easiest one yet...fit exactly as advertised, and came with all the right hardware. Took me 20 minutes to install. Thank you!!

Just got the hitch and it looks fine, even though it was bustin out of its box. Will verify that it’s untweaked when I match it to my car’s frame (2009 Pontiac Vibe). Stay tuned! So far all interaction with etrailer has been stellar. First rate customer service contact, through ordering and shipping. Now let’s see how it bolts on!

Excellent packaging and very
fast shipping. This hitch actually took longer to get out of the 'very well packaged' box than it did to install it! Easiest hitch I've ever installed.

Came quickly and was exactly what I ordered. Would have installed in 20 min, but, had to run out and pick up a little rotor brush to clean the threads on the car. Happy!

  • Differences Between the Curt Hitches for the 2009 Toyota Matrix
The difference is the shape of the cross tube. The part # C12228 has a square shaped tube whereas the part # C12221 has a round shape. Typically the round tubes are less visible than the square ones.

  • Is the Trimming Required to Install Curt Trailer Hitch on 2009 Toyota Matrix XRS Visible
The area that needs to be trimmed in order to install Curt trailer hitch # C12228 on a 2009 Toyota Matrix XRS will not be visible unless the trailer hitch gets removed. A small area will need to be trimmed to make space for the receiver. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you. If you plan on doing some towing the correct ball mount is # C45521 and you will need pin and clip # PC2. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19256 and for a 2 inch ball use # 19258. For trailer...

  • Recommended Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver For 2007 Toyota Matrix XR
The reason the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12228 is not listed as a confirmed fit on your 2007 Toyota Matrix XR is because it was designed to fit the 2009-2013 Matrix. For your 2007 Matrix XR you will need to use the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12013 which is the only confirmed fit for your vehicle made by Curt, and as you can see in the picture I included, it will install very close to the rear bumper to give you plenty of ground clearance. You will need to use the Stabilizing...

  • What Size Bolts are Used to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2010 Toyota Matrix
If you look at the instructions for Curt hitch # 12228 which I have linked for you, the bolt size used is M12-1.25 x 30mm. This is a 12mm bolt. This is the size that fits the factory weld nuts on the 2010 Toyota Matrix. Sometimes the weld nuts can get packed with grime or corrosion and it will seem like the bolts are too large to fit. We have a video and an FAQ article which I have linked for you that shows how to clean out the weld nuts to get the hardware to fit properly. If you plan...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2013 Toyota Matrix
If you want to go with a Class II hitch for your 2013 Toyota Matrix you can use # C12228. A Class II hitch still has a 1-1/4 inch receiver though so if you have a bike rack with a 2 inch shank that you wanted to use you would still need an adapter. But with a Class II hitch you can carry more than 2 bikes. If you need to carry more than 2 bikes I recommend going with the Curt hitch listed above and a Class II compatible bike rack such as the Thule Hitching Post Pro # TH934XTR. This bike...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2009 Toyota Matrix
First, where the car was built is not as important as what market the car was built for. If it was built for the U.S. market, it does not matter if it was made in Canada, Mexico, or Japan. You have probably noticed that many cars for any given year come out about a year early, so it is not unusual to see a model year 2009 car with a build date of 2008. A Class II hitch is going to be the better option and out of the 2 Class II hitches, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch # 12228 because...

  • What Ball is needed for a 1-7/8 Inch Trailer Coupler with the Class II Hitch on a 2009 Pontiac Vibe
The hitch ball for your ball mount will need a 3/4 inch diameter shank. You can use the Hitch Ball with 1-7/8 inch Diameter and Short Shank, 2000 lbs GTW - Chrome, item # 19256, or the Hitch Ball with 1-7/8 inch Diameter and Medium Shank, 2,000 lbs GTW - Stainless Steel, item # A-80.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2009 Toyota Matrix Type S Carrying a Bike Rack
For your 2009 Toyota Matrix Type S I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12228. This is a Class II hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver. It has a maximum tongue weight of 250 lbs to handle your bike rack. This hitch has a gloss black powder coat finish and a limited lifetime warranty. I would choose this hitch over the Draw-Tite # 24812 because of the higher tongue weight capacity. This means it can handle more weight from your bikes. It also does not have the same two bike restriction...

  • Receiver Height For 2009 Pontiac Vibe and Parts Needed For Trailer Towing
With the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12228 installed on a Vibe similar to your 2009 Pontiac Vibe we noted the top of the hitch will sit at approximately 12". Please note that this can slightly due to different models offering different tire sizes and springs sagging due to age. The Curt Class II Drawbar # C45521 has a 2-5/8" rise that would put the ball mount at an approximate height of 14-5/8". A 2" Ball # A-82 or 1-7/8" Ball # A-80 will be needed depending on your trailer coupler....

  • Differences Between Curt Class II Receiver Hitch Parts #12228 and # 12221 for a 2010 Toyota Matrix
The two Curt Class II Receivers offered for your vehicle, parts # 12221 and # 12228 have the same weight capacities and install in the same manner. Part # 12221 is constructed of round tubular steel that many find more attractive than the square tubing from which part # 12228 is constructed. If your Matrix is the XR or XRS model, minor trimming of the lower bumper fascia might be required. If you are planning on using the hitch for towing purposes, you will also need the T-1 Vehicle...

  • Why Does Curt Hitch for 2010 Pontiac Vibe Require Stabilizer Strap but Not Draw Tite
In order to satisfy Curt warranty requirements, any of their Class I or II receivers (like the C12228 you referenced) as well as a few of their Class III hitches must be used with a stabilizing strap like part # 18050. This applies to any non-trailer loads like a bike rack or cargo carrier. Curt has this warranty provision because of the lower tongue weight capacities of Class I and II hitches. The strap prevents any bouncing of the bike rack or other hitch mounted accessory from damaging...

  • Differences Between C12228 and C12221 Class II Hitches for 2011 Toyota Matrix
You're absolutely correct. The Curt # C12228 Class II hitch will install with the crossbar concealed behind the bumper (see installed photos on linked product page), while the Curt # C12221 Class II would be fully visible. Other than their appearance once installed, the capacities of the hitches are identical, as is the level of difficulty that the install involves. Matrix XRS and XR Sport models that have the fascia under the bumper will require some fascia trimming for either hitch...

  • Differences Between Class I and II Trailer Hitches Available for 2009 Pontiac Vibe
As your Vibe only has a 1500 lb towing capacity, the only benefit you'd get from going with a Class II hitch is the ability to carry 4 bikes on a bike rack, where the Class I can only carry 2. If you're only planning on towing, and are fine with being limited to carrying two bikes on a bike rack, the Draw-Tite Class I, part # 24812 would be my recommendation. The hitch includes the pin and clip, but the properly sized ball mount and trailer ball are sold separately as part # 19256 for...

  • Can a 2009 Pontiac Vibe Safely Tow a 1,500 Pound Boat Trailer
Since you would be right at capacity I do recommend taking any measures feasible in lightening the load. That will make it that much easier on the vehicle. I do believe that properly equipped, the 2009 Pontiac Vibe will be fine towing the 1,500 pounds. Since you will not constantly be towing it up a steep ramp, and that aspect is only a small part of the journey, the Vibe should be just fine.
