Great hitch, works well! The install, was straight-forward and instructions easy to follow. Would recommend Etrailer to anyone.
Overall, great product considering the alternative from the Volvo dealer is literally 10x as much.
A few notes though, I'm reasonably good with a wrench and have installed several hitches over the years. This one was the hardest, and took me 3 hours, not 2 as listed in the instructions for a novice.
I have a 2022 XC90 so the heat shield may have changed a little, but more cutting is required, especially around the rearward bolt, than described in the instructions. Also, the instructions never tell you to reinstall the heat shield, so don't forget that!
You don't have to remove the bumper cover, you can wiggle the heatshield out without removing. In new cars with parking sensors, they are a pain to remove.
Finally, the kit would have more complete if 4 small bolt retainers were included. These look like little toothed plastic washers that would hold the captured bolt in place while you are reinstalling the 45 pound hitch over your head on your back. Instructions say to use the fish tape to thread through the bolt holes in the hitch, but I think you would need 3-4 people under the car to make that happen. I only had a 15 year old helping me.
Again, great product, would buy again, but not a simple install.
Love this hitch. I installed it on my 2019 XC90 Volvo T5. It is a perfect fit. The Volvo Dealership (here in San Diego) sells the $2,200 option including labor and that just seemed to high to me and probably to you for a hitch, even if it is a motorized hitch. I want to add a few personal notes that you may find helpful. I was so happy with this I am planning on getting the hitch for my wife’s 2019 XC60.
1. Do watch the video on the site twice. I was very helpful. I actually had it nearby during the installation. Much easier than reading the paper.
2. I used a 19mm socket on the 1/2” bolts that are provided. That was not detailed anywhere although you could figure it out. But if you are like me and needed to buy some tools that is what fits.
3. There are already holes in the frame that you can use to feed the hardware through (near the axle). You might need to extend the feeder wires to use them but it saves you drilling the larger hole to get the hardware in. You will see it when you are under the car. I didn’t take the picture.
4. If you don’t have them you can easily buy drive on ramps (for pretty cheap) to raise up your vehicle enough to do this job safely. They gave plenty of safe room to work.
5. The trim for the heat shield instructions in the video mostly apply. You will need to do a little extra than what they suggest on the 2016 model in the video
6. MAKE SURE you have the muffler hangers attached to the muffler before you do final assembly. I took mine off for ease of testing the fit and marking the holes to drill. I didn’t put them back on before final install and what a difficult time I had getting them back on. You don’t want to drop the hitch because you might lose your 1/2” bolt.
Other than that I love it. Could not be happier.

Great that it didn't need to cut or adjust bumper. Sits a little low, but hitch ball and assembly can be bought to sit high. Not very noticeable. Really have liked it.

The Curt Trailer Hitch is very solid/strong. Well manufactured. The installation video is excellent although it takes closer to three hours to install and best to have a helper.
Great product, very good quality. The video instructions on the website were spot on. Had to buy a large step up drillbit which was 75 bucks at Home Depot but other than that it was pretty easy. Only other tip would be to trim a little bit more than you think you’ll need to from the heat shield before you put it on. It looks great on my 2020 XC 90.
To install is no need for a bigger hole, 5 inches to the front of the car is a big hole from the factory. Is what I used. For the back bolts I extend the rod on the coil wire.
