  • Prefer a hitch that looks like it came on your Subaru from the factory and doesn't call too much attention to itself
  • Want to cut as little fascia as possible - with this hitch you can get away with just notching out two slits instead of cutting out a chunk

No, if you:

  • Worry that you might harm the fascia while removing it to get this hitch in place

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

Easy install with video instructions on '17 Outback! I did this myself in about two hours, taking my time. A helper would have been really beneficial at times. As others noted, I opted to not hammer up the bumper clip bracket so I could re-use it. I filed off a corner of the bracket, but may not have needed to. Then I simply cut around the flanges of the hitch (took a few test fits to get it right). Take your time and cut less than you think - you can always cut more, but you can't put it back! I kept the foam pad in (some throw it out), the bumper gets pushed out by the thickness of the receiver plate, and it took a little finagling to get the bumper cover back on, but worth it in the end.

etrailer shipping and packing was great!

Still very pleased after one year of use!

Absolutely the way to go for a 2019 Outback. Easy no drill installation with no loss of clearance. etrailer's installation videos are great and is why I bought this hitch from them. You will need a DEEPWELL 14mm socket as shown in the video as a standard depth socket will not work.

Perfect fit on a 2019 Subaru Outback Premium. Install took about an hour, would have been shorter if the bumper trim had popped back in like it was supposed to, but nothing to do with the hitch. Been a year and still going strong, seems like it will last the life of the car.

2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

Once again etrailer outdid themselves! I was a little intimidated removing the trim on my 2019 Subaru Outback, but following the video and instructions it went super smoothly. I just took my time and before I knew it, I was cleaning up.

I really like the concealed look of this hitch and I sacrifice no clearance. The no-drill option made installation quick and easy. You are cutting the underside of your bumper trim. They recommend tin snips but a dremel-like rotor tool worked so much better.

I am so pleased with how this came out!

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

Just installed yesterday, haven't had a chance to try out yet, but quality is there, feels solid. Install was straightforward as others have shared, similar hangups with foam on bumper being too thick making reinstall of fascia difficult. As my car is three years old, removing bumper fasteners was a bit precarious (be very careful or have spares available). Bumper bar had also seized to bolts a bit on one side but after removing all nuts and a little wiggling it came free easy. I just held the bumper up to figure out cut, had to cut a little deeper as some stated in order to fit. With this particular hitch you could get away with cutting two narrow slits that will fit around hitch since it is not one solid bar where it elbows but two plates. Overall very happy with this purchase, can't wait to put it to use!

One year later and my trailer hitch is still holding strong and ready to go! Havent had any problems with it loosening, rusting, or even scratching really. Very happy with this purchase!

I installed this hitch and it went without a hitch. The product is very attractive and extremely well made. Installation was easy especially after watching the video. I highly recommend this hitch and don't be afraid to remove the rear bumper cover, it's really not bad at all.

2018 Subaru Outback Wagon

I installed this on my 2018 Outback Touring. The [online] video was a HUGE help. I'm so grateful for that. It took about 3 hours. My biggest challenge was re-mounting the rear fascia. Getting all of the parts tucked where they needed to be and making the old fasteners work again were the main obstacles. I could probably do it again in 2 hours or less now that I've done it once.

Hitched arrived fast and was in good condition.

issues were encountered. The notch specified for the cover is too big. I undercut mine and tested the fit. i ended up with 3 1/2 x 5 inches and DID NOT curt through the center push pin hole. The push pin fit correctly after install and there was about 3/16 inch clearance around the receiver frame.

The bigger issue involved the internal bumper that sits on the bumper frame. There is no compensation for adding the hitch. The hitch pushes the internal bumper to the rear by the thickness of the hitch mounting surface. Doesn't seem like much but it has a MAJOR impact on seating the cosmetic bumper later.

I ended up fabricating my own frame brace bumper using a shop floor tile. This reduced the chance of a cover crack during in a minor collision. You could leave the factory bumper off and take the risk. The floor tile was half the thickness of the factory internal bumper.

The cosmetic cover should not require big forces to re-seat. If it does something is WRONG. Proper seating only requires medium finger pressure producing audible clicks along the quarter panel. If there is any misalignment it will not seat correctly.

Works excellent and has been trouble free since the install issues were solved

2008 Ford Ranger

The Curt Hitch is everything that I expected, and more!!! When paired with the Thule Goal Post, and the Thule Portage Canoe Carrier w/ Tie-Downs - Gunwale Brackets, it makes for an extremely secure setup!

My first and last purchase from etrailer!

I'm a first buyer from and probably will not be returning due to:

1. I added a hitch for my Subaru for $xxx. Went to warm up lunch, then came back to checkout. The price jumped to $xxx while in the cart. There's no phone number to reach someone, so I shot of a message to customer service. After a few days they replied that in the future they would happily price match any competitor's price. I wish you luck if you do have any issues in the future, reaching someone is almost impossible. Not really concerned about the $x difference, but just goes to show the level of customer service to expect.

2. The packaging of the hitch was terrible. The UPS guy actually rang and waited for me to come so we could inspect the hitch. It was loose packed in a cardboard box with no bubble wrap or anything. Half of it was sticking out of the box, so the driver wanted to make sure I still wanted it. I've literally had cheap [online] orders packaged better than this. $x worth of bubble wrap would've gone a long way.

Customer Service will reach out to you.

Installation was easy and straightforward. Very happy with the hitch on my Subaru Outback.

2018 Subaru Outback Wagon

I strongly recommend this product for your car. This is incredibly perfect for extending my family life with bike loading, trailer and so on. The Installation video is very easy to follow, so I believe anyone can install it by yourself. Shipping was also fast and detail tracking information is helpful. Since they guarantee the price pledge, this is the cheapest product.

I installed the hitch receiver one year ago. It still works great and there hasn’t had any issue until now. I recommended their product to my friend who has a Toyota Highland. The install was easier than main, and fitted well. Now we used to have a bike trip together.

2013 Subaru Outback Wagon

The delivery was fast and the product looks well made. The installation from a local garage is very clean. I hesitated doing this earlier on my 2013 Outback as the old hitch design required cutting the heat shield for the muffler. That didn't seem like a good idea. This new design avoided having to do that. I haven't used it yet, but the etrailer experience was good, looks like the instructions don't match exactly for the 2013 Outback, there is a discrepancy in where the bumper gets cut? Otherwise highly recommended. Thank you

I just installed the hitch yesterday, and got this invitation to review the product at the same time. So, my experience with it is limited, but I can say that it was a replacement for the equivalent Draw-Tite hitch, which was welded together crookedly. The Curt hitch looks like it has proper welds with sections that should be perpendicular actually being perpendicular.

Subaru Outback Wagon

The online ordering process was straight forward. Shipping was prompt, and arrived on the date expected. The hitch was very well packaged, the box showed some shipping wear, the hitch was in perfect condition. The installation video was incredibly useful, I knew where every fastener was and what tools were needed before starting the project. The fit was perfect, no need to modify anything to get the hitch to fit.
When it came to cutting the bumper cover to fit around the hitch, I decided to depart from the instructions a bit, I did not bend the tab out of the way, and cut two slots instead of cutting out a square. This took a little extra time, but I liked the finished product. Like some others mentioned, the extra 1/4 inch of thickness between the body and the bumper made it difficult to put the bumper cover back on with the foam pad installed. I was able to plane the 1/4 inch out of the foam piece, and am happy with the fit. Note the garage temp was in the low 40's, I think on a 75 or 80 degree day the cover may have fit with the foam unaltered. I had the job wrapped up in two hours, but I had help and was working on a lift, I expect would take longer working on the floor.
This is a good product, well built, great price. I would definitely buy this again if I needed another hitch for an Outback.

2018 Subaru Outback Wagon

Great product! Videos are essential to understanding how this all comes apart. This was not that bad to install...just take your time and have all tools ready. The bumper bolts were torqued way more than is suggested in the installation guide and was a bit difficult to loosen.

On my car, I opt'd to cut out slots vs. a square.

The hitch has a lot of space inside the box without any inserts protecting the hitch. Good thing there is no major damage that could have prevented a good install.

Installation - Detailed & easy to follow for DIY. Video helped a lot.

Product - look good as described. I like the part where the hitch is hidden & flushed on the bumper.

4 star overall. It could have been 5 if the Packaging is good.

Now, time to buy a better (platform) bike rack.

Works really well and looks great. I will say the only thing I was not satisfied about is that the instructions do not exactly apply to a 2013 Outback. The procedure is slightly different, but I figured it out and it does fit.

You mentioned that the instructions did not exactly apply for a 2013 Subaru Outback and I wanted to ask you if you could explain in more detail?
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 03/31/2022
Yes. The bumper removal process is slightly different for the 2013 model year Outback. The receiver bolted on just the same though. The main difference is that the pins to unhook the bumper cover are in different locations.
-- comment by: Matthew - 03/31/2022
I checked with the manufacturer and it is something that they have not encountered before. The hitch would install the same way through all the model years that it fits which would be 2010 - 2012 Subaru Outback Wagon excluding Sport and 2013 - 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon.

2015 Subaru Outback Wagon

Fair price point (best I found), and the product itself is solid. Has performed perfectly. My mechanic who did the install also happy with the ease of installation. It went on a 2015 Subaru Outback (4cyl) for a multi-bike hitch.

Easy install, and super reliable for towing. Done many trailers and bike racks with no issue

2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

The product was as advertised, and the instructional video from etrailer was quite helpful. You will need an above average Mechanical ability as you will have to remove and replace trim panels around the bumper without breaking anything. As it was, the installation went smoothly and without any problems.
I also purchased the T1 connector for the Subaru wagon and we're wagon and again the instructional video was excellent and it was excellent and I had that installed in 15 minutes.
Every part of the experience from the online website, the competitive pricing, free shipping, to the installation videos, were top notch.

So the hitch itself is great. This hitch fits several years of Subaru Outbacks. Mine is a 2012 and the videos and instructions had a differences from mine. First the instructions lead you to believe that you trim the bumper clip off center from the center hole but you trim it exactly in the center. The video shows you unbolting the back clip from the vehicle body but on a 2012 there are no bolts. The biggest problem with the instructions is that they say to trim bumper clip 4.5" deep on my car that didn't work at all. I've attached a photo that shows what I trimmed, it was almost 6"and that was barely deep enough. I also left the foam piece off because the plate that mounts to car is approx. .375" thick and there's no accommodation for the thickness. Between the deeper bumper trim and thickness of the foam it was very difficult to replace the rear bumper clip. The hitch seems very well made and finished. This style seems better than one that bolts to the frame underneath with no need to drop part of the exhaust, cut part of exhaust shield, drill holes through thick steel or crawl under the car. Delivery was fast and the online support for installation seem pretty good except for the differences listed here. Install time would have been under 3 hours if the instructions had been correct for a 2012.

We have had this trailer hitch for just about one year now. It was easy enough for my hubby to install in an afternoon and it works great. We are very pleased with this product and wouldn't hesitate to purchase again from etrailer.

Great price! Much better than what the dealer has and quality is great. We are looking to upgrade our Subaru and will buy another hitch from etrailer.

2018 Subaru Outback Wagon

This tow package was for the 2018 Subaru Outback H6R. It fits beautifully. Just a minor trimming on the bottom side of the bumper. No unsightly showing of the tow bar or anything related.

The removing, and reinstalling of the bumper after the tow package installation took about 2 hours (due to the sensors on the bumpers and their connections).

Value for the money, Fast delivery. I did not contact customer service for this purchase.
