  The problem you are describing is a text book example of road grime and corrosion pact threads in the weld nuts on your 2013 GMC Terrain.   The weld nuts on your vehicle will likely have to be cleaned out. Over time the threads can get packed with gunk and make it seem like the bolts are too large when really they are not. Use a spray lubricant such as PB Blaster and soak the weld nuts. Let them sit for about 15 minutes and then scrub them out with a brush such as # 814092 or a battery terminal cleaner such as # DW00254.   I checked the owner's manual for a 2012 Chevy Equinox and found that the 4 cylinder models have a 1,500 pound towing capacity if the trailer has brakes.
