Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario. Technical Support

I am pleased with this hitch. It does what its supposed to. The mounting of it was easy even after a few beers. I use a hitch basket with two 55qt coolers strapped down to it. It doesnt move, its very sturdy. The hitch doesnt stick out so its very shin/knee friendly. Pretty awesome. No compaints.

Still going strong, no issues.

Installing this was far less painful than I had imagined. For one, the video is extremely helpful. I just watched it until I needed to pause it, and that was really great. It took me about 2.5 hours to get this installed, but that's only because I was by myself and had never done anything like this before. There were three things that I found difficult: the hardest part was getting the push pins back into their respective places (make sure you don't break them when you're removing them), my dremel kept acting up so it took a while to cut the proper sized opening on the bottom of the fascia, and I couldn't figure out how to get one clip into place to snap the bumper back into place. But if you'll notice, those things have NOTHING to do with the trailer hitch! Putting the trailer hitch on was seamless and so easy as far as I'm concerned. I haven't towed anything with it yet but I'm soooo looking forward to it! You can see all the tools I used to install the hitch in one of my review pictures. It's not a lot of tools, which I think is awesome! Some tricks I used to make the installation even easier: 1) taping the lights up with electrical tape once I removed the brake light covers to keep them out of the way, 2) putting the bumper fascia on two folding chairs to keep it off the floor, 3) I didn't have a ratchet screw driver to get the bottom screw off of the mudflap, so I used a drill bit and a wrench, which worked pretty well, 4) I kept the push pins and screws near where I took them off of the car so I would remember which parts went back where.
All in all, a pretty painless installation for a complete newbie at this kind of thing, and I love the way it looks.

The video was very helpful and straight forward. completed the Hitch installation in 1hr 30mins, referring to the video during each step, since this was a DIY install. very happy and proud of this project because a did not break or loose in parts and saved expensive labor costs. Waiting for the new Hitch mount bike rack to arrive. thank you eTrailer staff.

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

We bought this for our Subaru Outback to carry the Kuat Transfer v2 bike rack, also purchased from These two work together great! We had the hitch installed by our local mechanic, who did a fine job. This hitch looks nice on the car and clears our steep curb out front with no problem.

This is an excellent hitch receiver. Because of the design, it is mostly out of sight. The only thing visible is the receiver portion. I use it primarily for a bicycle rack. I haven't used it on a camper, but I'm sure it would be great.

Exactly what I wanted! Very informative website, prompt shipping and A-1 customer service. Wish I had another vehicle to order another one of these. I'll go check with my wife, but it might be awhile. :)

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

I purchased the Draw-Tite Max Frame Hitch Receiver for my 2017 Subaru Outback. The people at Etrailer were great to deal with and helped me to make my choice in purchasing the correct hitch receiver for my Outback. I wanted a hitch that was like a custom fit and the Draw-Tite Max is the one. The instructions were easy to understand and it took about an hour to install. The service from Etrailer was great and they were always there to help me with my questions. I also purchased the Hopkins Plug in simple wiring harness which was very easy to install.

Larry S.

Looks great and works great . One great hitch.

Appears to be sturdy.
Mounting holes
don't match up nicely. Some finesse and bolt scrape to put it on. Due to thickness of hitch mounting plate, the bumper cover doesn't quite line up with all clips for snapping in to place. I noticed that someone mentioned leaving the foam block off to allow proper fitment of cover. ? Not sure everything is going to stay attached. We'll see.

1. I ordered the Draw-Tite hitch from etrailer based on the added feature of the extra set of pin holes for the stabilization pin. The hitch I received and installed did not have the extra pin holes. See pictures below. Unfortunately I didn’t’ realize this until I completed the installation. The packaging and instructions had the correct item number. But to tell you the truth I don’t know what I received…. Emailed customer service but the person who replied back was clueless… I am now shopping for a cargo rack but will most likely buy from that tool store in the northern part of the country.
2. Like others measure twice, cut once. I didn’t need to cut the center hole on the bottom of the fascia.. Used two zip ties to attach it since I couldn’t line up the hole sufficiently for the push pin.

Hi Tom, Thanks for your feedback! Draw-Tite updated their hitches and no longer have the second hole for the J-pin.

2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

The hitch was very easy to install on my 2019 Outback utilizing the video and instructions that came with it. I also installed the Curt wiring harness and I installed everything and was done and completely picked up in less than 3 hours.

The trailer hitch is built Rock Solid. It will most likely Outlast my car. Excellent product fairly easy installation.

Great product at a good price. This is my 3rd hitch from Etrailer - for my wife's and two sons' Subarus. I would buy from Etrailer again if I need another hitch. Bonus - clear-speaking customer support agents, good instructions come with the product, and even better instructional videos on the website. They even have videos about this versus that hitch, as usually you'll have options. This is how you do business.

Subaru Outback Wagon

Absolutely the best hitch for my Subaru Outback. Everything that was needed was included in the package and it arrived safely and fast. This hitch looks really good considering that my car is not really a large vehicle. The price was right and I definitely would recommend this hitch to a friend, which is exactly what I did. eTrailer is the place to get your hitch!!

After a year of use, my hitch is working perfectly. Absolutely tight and solid because it was a perfect fit. Dont waste your time looking elsewhere for your hitch. This place sells the right one and at a great price. If you need a hitch, check out etrailer first.

The instructional video was excellent. I just followed it to a T and had no issues. Just be careful with the plastic rivets, especially if you don't have a plastic clip removal tool (as I didn't). The measurement and Dremel cutout part was as easy as it gets.

Still no issues a year in!

2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

Went with the drawtite. Best value in my opinion..the eco hitch would have been my choice(I just think it looks a bit cooler and sits more at a factory height tow hitch..about an inch difference from the draw tite and eco hitch) but the drawtite looks super clean once installed!
It’s not a hard install and requires basic minimus tools. The video is real helpful. Tow infinity and beyond!

Sturdy! Always glad I made the purchase. Thing looks brand new still

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

Haven't had the opportunity to use this hitch receiver yet (waiting on a new bike rack from etrailer). But can say that the build quality seems excellent, and installation was a breeze. Took me and my son about an hour to install on our 2017 Outback and it looks good. Looking forward to putting it to good use!

Update: Have used this hitch receiver extensively with a two-bike rack and a cargo carrier, and it has been perfect. I added a 4-pin wiring harness and plan to purchase a small utility trailer, which should work well with this hitch receiver.

The product was great and fit nicely I had some quality concerns and they took the time to check it out and was willing to replace it if I wanted. I installed the hitch and they were right the problem was not that big of deal. I followed the video instructions and only had a few problems. getting the electrical connector apart and fitting the trim fascia back together. Because the hitch took up approximately 3/8 " I ended up trimming the foam, it was really easy I used a large serrated knife see picture and it fit perfect I also wired the lights fixture up and out of the way Did this by myself took 3 to 4 hours. I will be buying other products with confidence from them

2014 Subaru Outback Wagon

We are very happy with this hitch. Price was reasonable, and our mechanic said it was very easy to install on our 2014 Subaru Outback. We just took our first trip using this hitch for our bike rack, and it was awesome.

Still very solid, works great.

The hitch arrived on time and in perfect condition, having been well packed. The video instructions and PDF annotated online instructions made the installation process easy! A friend helped me, which made it even easier as we bounced back and forth with what we found best as we went removing each of the clips and parts and so on, but nothing was difficult. The reason I wanted this hitch was to support a hitch-mounted bike rack that this friend sold me when he upgraded to a much larger rack for his truck. I've also ordered a hitch-mounted 500lb cargo carrier basket and matching bag for distant camping trips this year. I'm really excited now that I'll be able to rent a trailer and help my family with upcoming house moving. The new hitch looks sleek and perfect!

I have installed it but not tested it as I have no trailer or tester. The installations was straight forward with the usual problem of finding the harness connector under the side panel. I found it helpful to remove the D ring assembly and to flip the back seats and that other cross member forward. That allows a bit more movement in the side panel to find and work with the harness connector. I found the connector in the upper left corner of the D ring hole and was able to find and cut the blue tape there. Just one piece of tape for me. No double sided foam tape came with the kit so I used some double sided adhesive velcro so I could remove the electronics in the future if necessary and placed it under the location shown in the photo with the tab up and the wiring down. Duct taped the wiring down and fed it under the foam panel and fed it into the spare wheel well. Plenty of wire to reach the hitch.

2013 Subaru Outback Wagon

I ordered my hitch and got it just 4 days later. I backed the car into the barn out of the sun at 9:45 and had the hitch installed and the car back on the road by 11:30 by myself. The hardest part was getting the clug clips out because of the dust and mud. Putting the bumper cover back on was time consuming, too, but I wanted to make sure everything fit correctly. I even located and replaced a missing plug to make sure all holes were filled. Installing the Tekonsha wiring harness went as per instructions, except I had to remove one cargo hook to allow the fender cover to lift enough to gain access to the vehicle harness. I ran the trailer plug under the interior padding and under the door gasket and will secure it to the hitch receiver with tie wraps. Looks good on my 2013 Outback 3.6R imited (don't mind the dust from the barn floor).

We dont tow often, but this hitch allows us the flexibility to tow a small trailer and UTV when we need to go outside the county. It is an excellent investment and does not hang out in the way.

Good quality product, arrived without a scratch or dent… The directions were clear and concise. For someone who doesn’t do bodywork as a profession, the hitch and trailer wiring were easy enough to install.

2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

As advertised.
I was able to install
this hitch on my 2019 Subaru Outback Touring Edition myself with standard hand tools in about 2 hours. Very satisfied so far.

Got this hitch early this year, had it attached by my mechanic cause I figured he had more tools than I do. I just recently got a bike rack for it and all I can say it that it’s rock solid! Through rough gravel roads I’d peek in the rear view mirror and the bikes are solid back there. (A testament also to the 1Up rack. What I also love about it is that since it’s attached to the inner steel bumper, it’s practically invisible except for the receiver. A great product at much less cost than a hitch from the dealer.

Same as the day it was installed! Ill be sure to get this hitch mount again when its time to trade in my vehicle!

Easy Install. Maybe an hour if you have a nice place to work. All the metal is very thick and the manufacturing is very nice, everything is done the proper way like the crossbar being put through the mounting plates and then welded on all sides and the drop to the receiver is fully boxed rather than just on two sides like some I saw.

Towed a 1500lb (combination) trailer and motorcycle 1200 miles ballanced with max tongue weight, with no issues.

I was very pleased with the quality of the trailer hitch for the price and the ease of putting it on my Subaru Outback! I know how to use tools, but not a car person, so the video and written instructions made it simple to do. I am excited to use my bike rack or even toe a small trailer.

Tammie D.

It has been a year since I installed the trailer hitch and it has been put to the test by driving from MD to CO with a [moving company] trailer. It passed the trailer test and I use it primarily for my Rocky Mount bike rack. Definitely got my moneys worth from the hitch and look forward to using it for years to come!

  • Does Hitch Opening of Draw Tite # 76227 Stick Out Past Rear Bumper
If a trailer hitch sticks out past the rear bumper of the vehicle it is installed on it you do run the risk of hitting your shin on it as you walk by. The good news is that the Draw Tite hitch part # 76227 sits about flush with the rear bumper so that would not be a problem. The picture I attached shows what it looks like installed on a similar Outback as your 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon. The cross tube of this hitch is not visible below the vehicle. Only the hitch opening.

  • Comparing the EcoHitch # 306-X7266 and Draw-Tite # 76227 for 2018 Subaru Outback
The EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver # 306-X7266 mounts almost identically to the Draw-Tite # 76227. They are vey comparable in quality and the trimming of the lower fascia is in the same location. The Draw-Tite hitch is my recommendation based on the towing capacity and tongue weight rating as it is just a stronger hitch even though it is lighter at 35 lbs compared to the EcoHitch at 49 lbs. The Draw-Tite is also more cost friendly.

Yes, I checked with the manufacturer and they do list the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 76227 as a fit for a 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon so I agree. The installation will be the same as a 2017 model year which I have attached an install video of for you.

  • Installing Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitch # 76227 on 2017 Subaru Outback
Good morning! At this time (September 2018) we do not yet have an installation video for the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76227 on the 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon. I have however attached the complete written instructions that you can take a look at. The hitch will use existing holes in the vehicle's frame for a no-drill installation but it does require temporary removal of the bumper/fascia along with some fascia trimming. We estimate an installation time of just around 2 hours.

Even though it is rated for more, you are limited by your lowest rated component. The Draw-Tite has a fully welded steel construction which ensures strength and durability. • Why Does Trailer Hitch Tongue Weight Differ From Vehicle Tongue Weight
Our trailer hitches are rated separately from the vehicle they fit. BUT, the overall towing capacity of a vehicle is always the lowest rated component so if your vehicle says 200 lbs tongue weight is the limit that is the limit regardless of how strong the hitch it.
