Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

The item was shipped on time, and specs were precisely as indicated on the website. The install perfectly followed the online instructional videos. All went smoothly. Hitch mounted bike rack is now installed, in use!

by:

Great product, reliable. However, unless you have jack stands or a dedicated auto bay to get under the car with room to spare, installation is pretty tough. It's not necessarily difficult, but you need leverage to get certain parts off the vehicle. Additionally, there are boring aspects so you need a step drill bit. However, once you get it installed, it's been reliable, sturdy, and instills confidence that whatever I'm towing behind me (bike rack, hitched platform, etc.) is safe and solid.

Clean fit. Great [online]videos demonstrating installation.

Subaru XV Crosstrek

Perfect hitch for my Subaru Crosstrek. Bought so I could install a hitch bike rack and this works great. Sits much more flush than regular 2in. Hitches I was looking at. Fairly easy to install if you have one or two other people to help you hold it up while you are installing it.

by:

Overall trailer hitch is as advertised. Good quality construction/ welds look good. Priced right. Shipped OK/ arrived no issues.
Installation was a bit tough. Videos were extremely helpful and a must to understand the order of bolt/ spacer block installation. The written instructions were of no help just to verify torque settings.
Two points of issue. The forward most bolt (one drivers side/ one passengers side) is juuuusssst that much too short. The kit supplied 4 -1.5" grade 5 carriage bolts but there really should be 2 - 1.75" or 2" bolts for those forward most holes because once you add the flat washer + the lock washer + the spacer in the frame and the spacer between the frame/ hitch it is impossible to screw the nut on. See attached pictures
Also, once installed and put to use, the Thule bike rack bolt that goes thru the hitch could not be tightened w/ the Thule wrench. The trailer hitch chain loops would not allow. A ratchet w/ 3/4" socket will need to be kept in the car for the Mrs to tighten when using the bike rack.
Hitch looks good and is installed and operational. Thank you

2016 Subaru Crosstrek

Great hitch for Subaru Crosstrek. I use it to put a tray style bike rack on the back. Easy install, I had no issues with the length of the bolts as other customers have mentioned. Also did not have to drill out the holes in the frame on my 2016 Crosstrek. Included bolt fishing wire makes it a breeze to install. If you do it solo, might want to have a hydraulic jack to hold the hitch in place while you bolt it on. Have not tried it for towing, but it looks like it's built solid. Arrived super quickly from etrailer.com, highly recommend!

by:

This worked wonderfully for our Subaru Crosstrek. I was able to install it myself and we have used it many times over the last year. We have a Thule bike rack that holds 2 bikes and we have taken our bikes to the river and beach several times.

by:

A perfect fit, and smooth installation. Definitely something I recommend. E-Trailer makes it even better with their top-notch support if you have questions. I have purchased several items from them, and have always been happy - they are my most trusted source for everything related to towing/hauling/trailering.

by:

Eases of install. took me a whole 45 mins. Definitely helps to have a second set of hands to hold the hitch in place. Highly recommend for a 2014 Impreza/crosstrek

by:
2012 Subaru Impreza

Fits snugly under bumper. I had it installed for me, so can't comment on the installation process. Just what I needed! Swagman bike rack and Draw Tite hitch are well made and very sturdy.

Jamie was excellent! She took care of everything and I had the hitch sooner than expected! Haven’t installed it yet, but will update when it’s done!

Very nice hitch. Easy to put on. Instructions were spot on. We use it with a bike rack.

Chevrolet Colorado

A solid hitch that the do-it-yourselfer can install. Bolted right onto the daughter's Subaru. Bike rack has never been out of the hitch since the install(the bike gets keep in the car sometimes for safety!) Very happy customer! Since college graduation last spring- car, hitch, bike rack, and bike have been from Maine to California with Utah and Colorado stops and now a job in Vermont! Everything works great! Thanks for a great product making people happy.

2017 Subaru XV Crosstrek

Product shipped fast but packaging could be a little better. The box was heavy duty but the hitch was put in there with no secondary protection so it arrived scuffed up from the cardboard. There were also a fair amount of chips in the paint but I run a powder coat shop and blasted it and applied a zinc primer anyways to withstand the salt and brines they put on our Minnesota roads in the winter so this didn't bother me. The factory powder coat on this was pretty average but I understand not everyone is willing to shell out extra cash for better paint and just want a functional hitch for a fair price. Installation was straightforward and a breeze. No need to drill any extra holes on my 2017 Crosstrek. Two people make mounting the hitch a lot easier so you don't knock the bolts back into the frame rail. Overall fit was spot on and should do me just fine.

Great product and easy to install. Customer service is excellent as I ordered the wrong hitch. Return was simple

by:
2012 Subaru Impreza

The trailer hitch fit perfectly. Great video and written instructions. I didn't initially lower the muffler until it became clear I couldn't properly torque one of the nuts until I did. Great product and support!

by:
2017 Subaru Impreza

Excellent product. Fits perfect for the 2017 Impreza. Could be a bit more snug up to the bumper but very happy with it overall. The front bolt could be longer as others have mentioned. I would suggest installing the rear bolts first and then the front ones.
Also, wish the receiver stop was a bit further back so that my rack would sit closer to the bumper, but overall very happy with it.

by:

The installation was very straight-forward. The fit is good and all the hardware was provided.

by:
Subaru

Best hitch I ever had. Put it on a Subaru Impreza

by:
Subaru

The trailer hitch frame I received was a perfect fit for my Subaru. Design, assembly and finish were all flawless. The video that is available online made installation a breeze. All very well thought out. I highly recommend Draw Tite. Very solid!

by:

We installed the hitch on our Crosstrek. The ordering process was pretty straight forward; however, make sure you are ordering for the correct model of car (I initially ordered for the Impresa model and etrailer was great to work with to return that hitch and correct my order.) Installation of the hitch was pretty simple; I watched a handful of youtube videos and they provided some great tips. We've had the hitch on the car over a year and are very happy with our purchase.

by:
Chevrolet SS

In all, install went well. Happy to see that frame holes did not need to be enlarged. Jacked up car, mostly on one side, and used scissor jack to help raise hitch into position. The fish wires for bolts are very cool.
Customer service is tops. Hitch marred by several bad scratches on hitch where hardware bag impacted in shipping, and I'd pay more for SS hardware here in rusty Northeast.

Ground clearance is good at 10"+.

Comments
Working well, but hard to keep rust-free. I even had coated when car had very expensive rustproofing treatment. Hard to keep drawbar from scraping paint, however. Prime and paint often!

2017 Subaru Impreza

The quality of this tow hitch is adequate. The hitch has a notch where it mounts to the frame to skirt the rear left exhaust hanger, but it’s not quite deep enough, so the hitch isn’t perfectly centered. I found getting the spacer in place for the forward holes a challenge, use tape as they show in the video to keep them in place. The instructions that came with the hitch said to drill an additional 1/2” hole next to the rearward holes to allow the carriage bolts into the frame, that wasn’t enough. Using a die grinder as they do in the video would have been much faster. The safety chain hoops came out of the box slightly bent which will in no way affect their utility but doesn’t inspire confidence in the quality of the product.

My biggest gripe is the misleading advertisement of this hitch. It is listed as good to tow up to 2,000#. That may be technically true, but not in a 2017 Impreza, the specific vehicle it was designed for. In fact, according to Subaru, a 17 Impreza does not have any tow rating at all. The owners manual states that the vehicle is not intended for towing, and to never be used for towing of any kind. Would towing within the capacity of the hitch cause a problem? I don’t know, but I am certainly not going to risk a breakdown that will not be covered under warranty to find out.

Clearly etrailer researches their products well, so I would like an explanation for this discrepancy. It is true that a hitch can be used for something other than towing, so the fact that it is being sold is not a problem. You could use it to mount a bike rack, or small cargo carrier. But in that case, the hitch should be listed on the website as such; appropriate for certain types of loads, but never for towing in this application. The listing states: “custom fit trailer hitch lets you tow a trailer...” which is not true. Had I not thought to check my owners manual, I might have inadvertently caused damage that would not be covered under warranty.

Comments
This trailer is hitch is designed for a variety of vehicles. Yes, it is a custom fit for the impreza but it fits other vehicles as well. It always a good idea to check the owners manual of the vehicle to see what is recommended by the vehicles manufacturer.

The hitch installed easily and fit as expected. It took me about 90 minutes to install it myself. I did have to remove 2 of the plastic body fasteners under the bumper on the driver's side of the car to free up the plastic panel underneath. It was interfering with installing the hitch. I put the fasteners back in after the hitch was installed. The plastic panel rests against the hitch, but it isn't an issue.
