Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Time will tell regarding how good the steel is. I purchased these because they are made in the USA. The units are shipped loosely in only a cardboard box and get bounced around. One of the four was open at time of delivery and was upside down; this unit looks like it was dropped and the outer bearing race journal is bent!

The parts arrived Ok, but the box was a disaster. The brake drum broke through the very thin box and was sticking out. It's a miracle that no parts were lost by falling out of the hole it created. Very poor packaging for such a heavy part.

Have not had a chance to install the hubs & drums yet due to the holidays so I can't comment on them but like many other customers have stated the boxes that the drums were shipped in were trashed. Three of the four boxes were badly damaged. Luckily there was no damage to the threads on the studs or to the drums. When I ordered the drums, Odelia told me that the drum number I gave her 008-201-09 was the same one that I was receiving but it definitely looks different than my original drum from 2005. (See attached pictures of the boxes and original drum with Dexter tag)

PARTS SHOWED UP JUST A COUPLE DAYS AFTER I ORDERED THEM. ALL THE PARTS ARE PERFECT AND THE TRAILER IS BACK ON THE ROAD. GREAT SERVICE AND GREAT PARTS.

Great heavy duty (better than the original) drums that fit like a glove on my 2016 Lippert 6K axles. Good fast shipping and great customer service when needed.

The product is excellent — I boutght the four drums to go with the four new brake kits that I bought from you. But the seal/bearing instructions indicate that you can order either kit. So, I picked the one that seemed to have the outside washer included. Unfortunately, the kit I selected had 2 1/8" ID seals and I need 2 1/4" seals. Now I have to go out and buy new seals, which are much more expensive locally. The fault is partially mine for not locating and reading the "fine print". But etrailer could be helpful by saying in its instructions, "Select the kit that corresponds to your required seal dimensions."

All parts fit fine and solved my braking problems. I do feel that the rubber plugs that cover the adjusting slot on the backing plate should be included in the charge for the backing plate. Etrailer was very receptive to questions I had.

I ordered an extra set of brakes for my dump trailer so that both axles provide stopping power. I called Juanita at etrailer and figured out every single part needed the first time. I didn't have to send anything back. Great job!

Ordered two of these for the front axle of a camper put 15,000 miles on them with no problems what so ever. fit my axle right out of the box. I did replace the races with the ones that came with my bearing kit because they weren't the same number as the old ones.

I recently purchased 4 Hub assemblies and Brake pads for a travel trailer. I work for a RV dealership and tried several venders. etrailer not only made the purchase easy, but they had the products I needed that no one else could seem to find and they were here within 2 days of ordering.

- 42656
by:

The only bad thing I can say is I found it difficult to make sure u was getting the right bearing. I would figure since bearings are not included when u click on the hub they would have what bearings fit come up under the hub. Again very fast shipping

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums

  • Can a Dexter Hub and Drum Assembly Replace an AL-KO Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly
Yes, a Dexter Hub and Drum like # 42656 will be interchangeable with an AL-KO hub and drum of the same size. When replacing the hubs, you need to make sure you get the proper hub for the spindle on the axle. Each trailer manufacturer uses a range of spindle sizes depending on the application. To determine the exact replacement, you will need to pull one of the existing hub/drums, locate the bearings, and get the bearing numbers that are stamped into both the inner and outer bearings. • Do the Bearings Need to Be Packed When Switching from Oil to Grease Lubrication
When changing from oil to grease lubrication in your trailer hubs you will need to completely disassemble the hubs and bearings making sure to clean off all of the remaining oil. Once the old oil is removed you will then need to repack all of the bearings and install them back into the hub. The final greasing to fill the hubs can be done though the zerk fitting on the Bearing Buddy but the bearings will need to be packed prior to installing them. Please note that the seals will need to...

  • Can Trailer Hub and Drum 42656 be Used if the Outer Bearing and Race are Different than what I have
Yes because the outer race 15245 is associated with outer bearing 15123 which has an inner diameter of 1.25". The race you have now, LM67010, is associated with bearing LM67048 which also has an inner diameter of 1.25". This means the new bearing will fit the spindle you have and matches the race for hub # 42656.

The trailer hub part # 42656 that you referenced has an outer diameter hub bore of 3.09 inches and does have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Since the thread pitch and size you mentioned are not standard for trailers we do not have them nor do we have any studs that match.

  • Recommended Brake Controller for Electric Drum Brakes on Boat Trailer
Electric drum brakes are found as OEM equipment on boat trailers more and more these days. This is due to their simpler 2-wire installation compared to what is involved with installing hydraulic brake lines, and also due to their moderate prices. There are no water-proof electric brakes, but what you can do to keep things right is simply to disconnect the trailer's electrical connector from the tow vehicle before backing the trailer into water. This action also helps to protect your trailer...

  • Replacement Hub and Drum for 5,200 lb Axles on 5th Wheel Trailer
The axle sticker says that the hubs on your trailer are rated for 5,200 lbs. The only thing you will want to ensure is that you do have 6 lug wheels so they will fit this hub. I have added a link to a video review as well.

  • Can Oil Bath Hubs be Converted to Grease Hubs
You'll basically just need to remove as much of the oil from your hubs as you can and then pack them with grease instead of oil. Oil seals and caps seal better than grease seals and caps so to make the conversion you want to make is not hard at all. It's when people want to go the opposite direction to they need new seals and caps. For grease you'd then want the LMX Red grease # L11390. Also, Bearing Buddies aren't a requirement so you don't have to find a Bearing Buddy to fit your hub threads.

  • Would Converting Oil Bath Hub to Grease Void Warranty

  • How to Convert Oil-Bath Hub to Grease Hub on Trailer
All you have to do is remove the oil from the hub and pack the hubs with grease instead since the oil seal and cap would easily work well with grease. The best grease out there is the LMX Red part # L11390 which is the most heavy duty and is also waterproof.

  • Will the Dexter Hub 42656 Fit on Their Axle 8327820?
As the Dexter Axle # 8327820 uses an inner bearing # 25580 and the outer bearing has an inner diameter of 1.250", the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum for 5,200-lb and 6,000-lb Axles # 42656 will definitely fit.

  • What is Needed to Convert Oil Bath Hub to Grease Hub
To convert an oil bath hub to a grease hub like your 12k Dexter axle has you don't actually need to change anything aside from removing the oil and putting grease in the hub in it's place. The oil seals are tighter than the grease seals and cap so there would be no risk for leaks. And since Bearing Buddies make it easy to overfill hubs and blow out seals we recommend greasing the hubs manually. For grease the LMX Red part # L11390 would be your best option as it's heaviest duty and waterproof.

Also, this hub has a 12 inch diameter and a 2 inch depth like what you said you needed. For the correct bearing and seal kit you would want a Bearing Kit # BK3-100.
