Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

This is an exact replacement for the hub that had been ruined on my 23' Donzi boat trailer. It was shipped extremely quickly and I installed it this afternoon - ready to roll again!

At the time I ordered these, I was new to re-doing breaks. I had never done anything like it before. I did my best research. However, I still ordered the wrong parts for my trailer. George and Tamera were extremely helpful in their research! They went out of their way to help me get what I needed. After watching the videos and getting greasy, the job was complete. I may have made mistakes along the way, and I really should have called first, but in the end, my trailer works great. My trailer - 3 years later - still has no issues and has over 10,000 miles on it pulling my quads. I have been a satisfied customer since 2015. Joel

Product arrived in good condition. Installation was smooth and easy. The only problem that I had, mainly my fault, was installing the dust caps. The fit was extremely tight to the point I bent it up then it would not fit properly. One thing I would suggest to others is to install and tighten as you would normally, then wait a day or two and try to wiggle the rim. If it does pull the cotter pin and tighten again. IF you can not wait then do check them after the first usage.

product a Hub and bearings were as expected-New, the bearing cap was thin and crushed when trying to get it to seat but it did finally work the unexpected thing was the fast service it had to be shipped the same day as I called in the order. That means downtime was less!! Thanks and I will be using you again!!

i bought this hub to adapt a 30's era Ford spoked wheel to my motocycle sidecar. it fits the wheel perfectly. it will take a bit a creativity to match it to my axle, but i knew that would be needed when i ordered it. it's a good solid piece.

Was very pleased with the trailer hub . We couldn't find one anywhere else! Would use etrailer.com next time we need anything!

Well, I can't say much about the product itself - seems to be just fine. I can, however, comment on the superb service - our shipment was "upgraded" without even asking. We ordered the part on a Saturday and had it on Wednesday. That's how you keep customer coming back!!

Ask the Experts about this Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums

  • Can 17 Inch Wheels be Used with 3,500 Pound Trailer Hubs
The Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 84555UC1 referenced in your question is designed for 3,500 pound axles and works with 13 inch to 15 inch wheels, like you mentioned. The potential problem with going to a larger 17 inch wheel is that there won't be enough surface area on the hub to safely support a wheel of that size. This can cause major issues if you were to hit a curb or other object in the road with the trailer, as this lack of support from the hub can easily lead to the wheel...

  • How To Pick out a Replacement Hub For a Boat Trailer
Until you can verify that the hub on your trailer is a Trailer Hub Assembly # 84555UC1 I cannot recommend you go ahead and purchase this hub as a replacement. Unless the trailer you have currently has a hub problem you really wouldn't need to worry about having a back up for the 1 hour drive with the trailer back to your home. What I would do is inspect the trailer before you purchase it to make sure the hubs are in decent shape. If so, buy the trailer and wait till you get home and...

We do offer 60-inch replacement trailer axles from Dexter and both can be seen on the link provided. Note that both of these are rated for 2000-lbs. The 5-on-5-1/2-inch hub you referenced, part # 84555UC1, is intended for 3500-lb axles. The most important measurements for selecting a replacement axle are the hub face-to-hub face measurement (taken with the hubs in place) and the spring center-to-spring-center distance. Please refer to the linked photo. For example, Dexter Trailer...

As long as your existing hubs are idler units and feature this same 5 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern, these will work great as replacements. If a hub or wheel has an odd number of holes/studs then you would measure from the center of one hole to the center point between the 2 holes across from it.
