Corrosion Resistance for Marine Use

This trailer hub-and-drum assembly has a zinc coating that resists corrosion, making it ideal for use on your boat or snowmobile trailer. All GAL-DEX hubs and drums undergo a test in which they are sprayed with a 5-percent salt solution to determine corrosion resistance over time. These products are able to withstand 500 hours of constant exposure to the saltwater mist. This 500-hour salt spray rating indicates that a product is not only durable enough to last in freshwater environments, but it can also be used on trailers that come into contact with saltwater.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Dexter Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub with Integrated Drum - 8-201-51UC3

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this Dexter Galvanized 12-inch trailer hub and drum assembly for 6,000 pound axles. Has the six and 5 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now this is a marine grade trailer hub and drum assembly. It'll provide the surface area for your brake shoes to grip when your brakes are activated. And if I spin this around just to show you the back of it right here, you can see if you're using the hydraulic drum brakes, then the shoes are gonna apply right here.

If you're gonna use it with the electric brakes, then you're gonna see where the magnet will apply right here. So this is compatible with both electric and hydraulic drum brakes. And if you notice, this part does come with all the extras there that I have laid out on the table. It'll come with both the inner and outer bearings. Comes with the bearing races that are already pre-installed into the assembly.

Comes with the grease seal. Comes with the grease cap, and it comes with six of the half inch by 20 size lug nuts for attaching your wheel and tire assembly to this. Now the part numbers for all these parts if you do want them, they are listed on the product page at the bottom of the page. Now this is a sturdy iron construction. If you notice it uses a Gal dex finish on it, which is actually a zinc coating that has a 500 hour salt spray rating.

So this is ideal for use on a boat or snowmobile trailer and it's durable enough for saltwater applications. Again, the application for this one is 6,000 pound trailer axles with the number 42 spindle. The wheel sizes that'll fit on this is 14 1/2 inch up to 16 1/2 inch diameter. The drum dimension, if we spin this around again, the dimension on this, if we measure inside this side to this side, is gonna be 12 inches. The width of two inches is gonna be the width right here and this will work with 12 inch by two inch brake assemblies.

Now the bolt pattern on this, spin it back around to the front here, you can see as a six on five 1/2 inch bolt pattern. The wheel lug size that fits on this is a 1/2 inch by 20 and the weight capacity on this is 3000 pounds per assembly. So when used with one on the other side, it'll meet the 6,000 pound axle rating. But that should do it for the review on this Dexter Galvanized 12-inch Trailer Hub and drum assembly for 6,000 pound axles with the six on 5 1/2 inch bolt pattern.

I replaced the entire triple axle suspension on my 5 wheel with your products. Everything went well and I’ve had no problems with the updates.

by:

Product has held up remarkably; I trailer only so there are weekly drops for the boat.

Last year was lighter then normally but all in all better then I though they would last.

by:

Product is good quality, it was just what I needed, And fast shipping would definitely order from again and recommend to family and friends.

  • What is the Outer Diameter of the Center Hub Bore for Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-201-51UC3-EZ
The outer diameter of the center hub bore on hub and drum assembly # 8-201-51UC3-EZ is approximately 3-3/4 inches. Most trailer wheels center using the lug nuts though and not the hub. That means that the wheel pilot hole can be larger just not smaller.

  • How Tight Should Spindle Nut be on Trailer Hub
When our installers replace a trailer hub, there isn't a set torque spec used when tightening the spindle nut. The hub is placed on the spindle, making sure the inner and outer bearings are correctly seated. The spindle nut is then run down until you start feeling resistance. At that point, spin the hub and check for end play (wobble). If the hub still seems a bit loose, you can run the nut down a bit more. As you'll see in the video I've linked to, tightening the nut is something you'll...

  • Will 6k Dexter Hub & Drum Fit on 7k Dexter Drop Axle
Yep, the two are indeed compatible. You were right on about the hub bearing, since it has the same inner diameter, it will fit the 7k axle. So you can use the following together: - Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with 4" Drop E-Z Lube Spindles - 7,000 lbs # 8327872 - Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 6,000 lbs # 8-201-51UC3-EZ Please note that you will need to abide by the lowest-rated component of your set up, which is the 6,000 lbs of the hubs. I also wanted to mention that if you need...

  • Will a 2-1/8 Inch Grease Seal Fit in Place of a 2-1/4 Inch Grease Seal for Hub # 8-201-51UC3-EZ
The 2-1/4 and 2-1/8 grease seals are usually interchangeable but manufacturers have started going to the 2-1/8 model for a tighter fit. So what you would need is # GS-2125DL for one seal or # RG06-090 for a pair. We can't swap the seals out of a kit though so they would need to be purchased separately. the other option is to use regular hub and drum # 8-201-9UC3-EZ. It isn't galvanized but does come with the 2-1/8 inch seal.

  • Can I Use a Timbren Axle-Less System on a Boat Trailer That is Used in Salt Water
Yes. Timbren Axle-Less Suspension systems like the # ASR35HDS05 have a thick powder coating on them, so they could be used on a boat trailer that gets submersed into salt water and do just fine. The spindle uses # 15123 outer and # 25580 inner bearings and you'll want to use hubs with either a dacromet plating or a galvanized finish. The hubs I recommend would be the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 6,000-lb Axles - 12" Diameter - 6 on 5-1/2 - Galvanized # 8-201-51UC3 which would...

The 8-201 trailer hub replacement is the part # 8-201-51UC3. This for a 6,000 lb axle so for leaf springs you'd want the # e94SR which is 26 inches long. For a U-bolt kit you'd want the part # APUBR-8 and then for replacement shackle bolts part # 166081.

These assemblies will fit perfectly with your axles based on the bearing and seal information you gave as well as 14.5 inch wheels. Then...

In order to use 6-on-5-1/2-inch bolt pattern hubs on a Timbren axle-less suspension system those hubs will have to use the same bearing set as the hubs intended for that system. In the Timbren system # ASR35HDS02, for example, which has 4-inches of lift and is rated for 3500-lbs and off-road tires, the bearing set is inner bearing # 25580 and outer bearing # 15123.
