Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Install was easy, I just wish it came with a cotter pin. I had to run to HomeDepot.

by:

These hubs worked great. I had to add the spindle nut washers to get good engagement between the spindle nut and cotter pin. I would definitely buy these again.

by:

Hubs not made by dexter and not made in US. No reason to pay extra for these over other Chinese hubs. Would have returned but etrailer was slow to ship and I was leaving for a trip and couldn't wait.

It looks like you may have been sent the wrong part by mistake. I am sending this along to our customer service team to make sure that they reach out to you.

by:

There was a problem with the initial order I received and it was promptly handled by the polite and helpful customer assistant. These parts worked great for a single bike takedown trailer.

by:

The hub was very easy to install. The only problem I had was installing the wheel bearing hubs. It took many tries to get them on.

by:

Ordered two hubs, only one arrived. Second tracking number says it was never picked up. Now I have to wait 8 days for an investigation before I can get a replacement part. Upgraded the shipping so I could receive and work on trailer during the holiday break. No blame, just stating what happened.

by:

I wanted to change from four lug wheels and tires to five lug type on my boat trailer. Towed trailer, loaded with fishing gear, fuel tanks, extra motor. and batteries from central Pennsylvania to Fort Peck, Montana and back. The trip was uneventful. Other than the fishing....it was GREAT!
Your new hubs made my trip successful.

by:

Made 4 800 mile trips to date with absolutely no problems. I would buy them again

by:

Smaller, bearing on the backside came out once I open the package

Oh my goodness! I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you.

by:

these are great hubs. my trailer had tiny 4 bolt hubs and wheels and these fit perfect on the 1" spindles and allowed me to run a much taller tire. even comes pregreased with plenty of grease

by:

I have ordered from e-trailer twice. Both times they provide excellent service! Parts arrived amazingly fast!! One order had a damaged part, I called and got a very nice sales rep. Parts were replaced FREE. I will deffinatly order from them again. I ordered hubs, wheel and tires, and light kit for my boat trailer. All parts are good Quality.

by:

Hubs went on without any trouble. Only tricky part was to get the caps seated into the hub to trap the grease. Haven't used the trailer yet, but don't anticipate any problems. Shipping was awesome. I ordered with standard shipping and the box was on my porch the next afternoon.

by:

The hub I ordered for my trailer worked perfectly!!!!!! The customer service is unreal, from fast shipping to constant checks(personal emails) to see if item had arrvied on time, truly a professional company that puts their customers above all. I never write reviews put this company definetly earned it, Thanks and I will be back!!!

by:

I initially ordered a pair of hubs from another online retailer That I has used prior and whom had mine "in stock". They didn't. After 5 days of no shipping info, they notified me they were back ordered. I cancelled the order.

I ordered a pair of these hubs from etrailer.com on 6/2, George notified me on 6/3 that they shipped and I received them on 6/6. That's customer service.

Price, availability and delivery. Every online retailer should strive for this level of attention..

by:

Put on trailer brand new again hubs bearings all good fast shipping will deal with you again thanks

by:

Not only is the product exactly what we needed (the dust caps are a little on the lightweight side) but Matthew was extremely helpful in getting me the parts I needed to fix my trailer!

by:

I am just starting on a restoration of a 40 plus year old motorcycle sidecar and the hub and wheel that I ordered are perfect for this project. I will try to send pictures on completion, probably a few months out.

by:

Perfect fit. Bad old trailer bearings? Buy the complete hub!

by:

Fit perfectly

by:

Good product fair price. Packaged well. No missing parts.

by:

fit perfect,
great website I easily
found what I needed,
seems well made,
the outside dust cover was hard to install (I had to fiddle with it)

by:

high quality wheel hub

by:

Shipping was fast and install was easy...your measurement guide was very helpful to figure out my spindle size and lug stud spacing for my wheel. Thanks

by:

Great price, fast shipping, and customer service is professional. I will continue buying from etrailer. Thanks for your business.

by:

  • Replacement Hub For A Trailer With A BT8 Spindle
For a replacement hub that uses # L44643 bearings with a 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern you'll want the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # 8-258BTUC1. This will come as a quantity of one so you'd need two kits to do both sides of the axles. Each kit will come with the bearings, races, seal, grease cap, wheel bolts, and lug nuts included.

If you needed a hub and drum assembly for your spindle you would need the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-257-5UC3. The # 34822545BX would not work on your spindle dimensions.

Your existing bearings will have the reference number etched into the side of the bearing cage for easy identification. We have one 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern option for each bearing set. It sounds like you have a standard 1 inch straight spindle. Because it is for a boat trailer, I recommend replacing your hubs and bearings with a galvanized hub to reduce corrosion. • Replacement 5 On 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern Boat Trailer Hub for 1 Inch Spindle
Before proceeding, I'd take a moment to confirm the spindle diameter, because there are two different bearing sets that are very close in dimension, so you'll want to be absolutely sure of the measurement you get. We recommend using a digital caliper like part # PTW80157. When dealing with specifying spindle/bearing ID dimensions a ruler or measuring tape typically won't provide enough accuracy which is why using a caliper is preferred. • Where to Measure on Trailer Spindle to Pick Out Replacement Hub
Are you sure about the inner diameters of the bearings? Since you said it's a Dexter we should have a solution unless this is a mobile home axle. • What Limits the Speed of a Trailer
What limits the speed a trailer can go is the tires. Trailer tires are only rated to go 65 miles per hour. If you are traveling fast enough that bearings in good condition begin to damage themselves the trailer tires are probably already in the process of failing. Trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall, to handle vertical loads, that get hot enough to fail when you exceed 65 miles per hour. Going to a larger diameter wheel/tire will not give you the ability to exceed the speed...
