How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

This little rig has teeth! Much faster than i expected. About a 30 minute installation from old lift removal to new and wiring. Super simple. Great addition to my hangar 18!

Still going strong. I like this little guy a lot!

My Jack arrived DOA. After installing it on my trailer, the Jack didn’t work. The manual crank handle came in handy because I didn’t have time to troubleshoot and repair it at the time. It was just a wire that was no longer connected to the switch but I have to tell you it was extremely disappointing to receive a brand new item that didn’t work. If it had worked out of the box, I’d give it a five star review. You should consider soldering and heat shrinking the wires to the switches or making the wires longer so they aren’t banjo string tight and putting the lug at a strange angle.

Great product and Trailer has great customer service. It's to bad that the shipping companies do not take better care with the items during shipping! will receive replacement parts to fix what was broken, but it causes lots of extra work for the customer. will have to take complete jack off to replace the broken motor cover because of shipping carelessness!!

regards,

Dan Ewert

Works very well on our Lance 1475. My reason for giving it less than 5 stars is the wiring provided for the positive lead. It’s too short to run it properly secured between the jack and the battery box, the manufacturer should add another 12” or so. I had to splice more wire in to make the connection and be able to secure the wire along the trailer frame. Also, a little heavier gauge wire would be a good idea for the amps this unit is pulling. Other than that, the form, fit and function are perfect.

Still working perfectly after a year of use, and perhaps 10 camping trips. Definitely great value for the money. I did purchase the vinyl cover to protect it, and just leave that on all the time.

Jack is fine, mechanically and electrically. But the plastic lens over the LED lamp would not fit properly, no matter what I did. So I had to use silicone caulk to seal it up.

I will give 10 stars to etrailer and its employees. My 1st replacement jack didn't make out so well after a trip on the Long Island Expressway. I contacted the company, and a replacement was on the way in short order. Thank you!
The product itself does seem above average and appears great for the price point. Very easy install. I suggest taking your time with the electrical connection and hooking right up to the point of contact instead of a splice if you can, there's plenty of wire. I now cover the unit with a plastic bag, as my original lasted only 5 years and the insides were all waterlogged and rusted when it failed.

by:

As always, I was extremely impressed with the customer service and efficient shipping of my order.
My first stop is always etrailer!

by:

My second jack from etrailer, previous jack was very dependable and worked very well for years.
This one will replace the previous jack which as damaged by user forgetting to retract it before attempting to drive off, no fault of the previous jack. etrailer service, quality and price is fantastic.

The jack works as advertised. It is strong enough to raise the back of the truck to make it easy to set the chains on the weight distribution hitch. The only design change I would make is to have the motor on the aft side (trailer side). I can no longer lower the tailgate on the truck when hitched. But for function, it is great! I also wired in a single pole, double throw switch (with a center off position) so I can use the trailer battery when not hooked to the truck. The switch is mounted inside the trailer and in the center off position it isolates the jack so no one can operate it when unattended. I would definitely recommend this jack to anyone.

Terry

2/6/2023

Totally satisfied with the jack. Works great and my trailer comes in at over 7,000 lbs. I was able to turn the motor assembly 180* and now I can lower the tailgate on the truck. this might no work on trailers wit propane bottles on the toung. I would definitely recomend this jack to anyone

by:

So far disappointed, customer service. The box was opened and damaged on the front step. I can't tell what is missing because there is no parts list. The instructions were torn and the 57" wire has vanished into the abyss because the one attached is 47" . Sure this is just a mistake but the quality controls and customer service so far is less than desirable. I have emailed Nicole and Alexzandar with pics, per their request. I asked Alexzandar if I could start a return and he said sure I would get a separate email and the shipping of $XX.XX would be deducted from my refund. Support your local dealer this was not what I was expecting from this site.

This was purchased for my 24 foot enclosed car hauler. Overall I think this is a decent purchase, priced under $120.

The fuse should come from the factory with dielectric grease packed in the little holder as it is located outside of the housing and it's in a pretty rough environment. The power lead length is plenty long for connecting to either a battery mounted on the tongue or service box that all of your trailer wires go into- This is where I wired mine into. I actually used a grommet to plug the hole that the manufacturer ran the power wire through and drilled another hole on the other side so the wire would run straight down the correct side of the jack and into the service box.

One of the screws that mounts the black housing on to the metal frame was pulled through by the time it arrived, so I am used washers when I reinstalled them to help prevent this from happening again.

Other notes:
I will need to get a longer hitch now, as my tailgate will hit the jack housing, and I did purchase a cover for the jack from the recommended bar at the bottom when I purchased this jack.

Final:
I've only cycled it up and down twice but it worked nicely and quietly so overall I am very pleased with my purchase

If I were to review this product a week ago, it would have been a very different review. I bought this a year ago to replace my jack on my camper. I installed it at the end of last season and it was only used starting in May of this year. It started out great. I had no issues with raising and lowering the camper (a lot easier than a manual jack!). However, right before it was a year old, it stopped working. There was still power going ot the jack, I tried to change the fuse, nothing worked. I knew that i was still under warrenty, so we called etrailer. They were not helpful one bit. I was hung up on after i was trying to understand why i was going ot have to pay to ship this jack back to them before they would ship me my replacement. Mind you, i am still under warrenty. I don't have another jack for the camper to sit up on. So i was asking how i would do this. She was not helpful one bit and hung up. We called back and asked to speak to a manager, and he just said it was industry standard for customer to pay to ship the items back. So because they sold me a faulty jack, wanted to take no responsibility for making sure they are selling quality products, they are making me spend more money because i trusted them. If you want to try your luck with buying from this company, go for it. However, i never will again after this horrible experience we have had.

Easy install for somebody reasonably handy but the lack of visuals (even when the instructions say to “see picture” that isn’t there!) is unfortunate. The instructions are also confusing because they talk about installing the fuse as close to the batteries possible for the fuse comes hardwired. It seems like they probably revised their design but did not improve their instructions. It seems like they probably revised their design but did not improve their instructions. Still it’s a great deal and seems to work well.

Not uploading pictures because it looks exactly as advertised and exactly as in all of the other pictures.

I got the recommended matching cover and if it’s great.

Working great. No problems to report. Highly recommend this product and your business! Thanks

The Jack seems to be great quality and was very easy to install. At first I was a bit perturbed with the lack of detail and small font of the one page directions, but it’s as simple as 3 bolts and one wire to the battery(the hack is grounded inside). It raises my 2017 Jayco Baja much higher than stock crank jack. I hope it lasts the test of time as I am very happy with it this first day. The light seems bright as well.

After a year it still works great!!! Looks good and works like a dream!

by:

Works well, does the job. Like most electric jacks, you have to hold the button for almost a minute or so because it moves slowly. It’s a great buy at a good price. Easy to install and use. No issues with the product after the first year. We do have the problem lowering our tail gate on the truck but any Jack gives us the same problem. A longer hitch would solve that issue.

by:

I have been more than happy every time that I have used your services. Products are always exactly what I needed. And I appreciate the timely shipping of materials. Thanks

The jack showed up with a damaged top cover and it was missing one of the three star washers used for the bolts. I was able to use one of the old washers and etrailer was very quick to send me a replacement cover with no questions or charges. 5 stars for customer support and service! 4 stars for the jack, works fine but it should not have showed up with the two issues and it was still sealed in the box so it wasn't someone else's return.

by:

I got the electric Jack in just a few days. Put it on today and will test it tomorrow as I get ready to travel with camper. So far I believe it will be a great jack!

by:

Installed this jack on a 2021 Wolf Pup 16PF camper a year ago and have used it numerous times since. The jack lifts with ease during each operation. Install was quick and easy. Would highly recommend this jack if your load falls within the rated specs.

by:

Easy installation, more powerful and the light and switches seem higher quality. Time will tell but happy with the first year of use.

by:

Very solid and heavy duty jack, with bright LED lighting, manufactured by Ram. Adjustable foot piece for quicker adjusting... Jack pretty easy to install, with single wire electrical connection and 3 bolts. Jack has low gear ratio and foot shaft moves slowly, but has plenty of power to lift front of trailer. Plenty of clearance behind jack for propane tank cover on our Airstream. Replaced more expensive model that was bent at mounting flange being winched onto transport trailer.

John

2/9/2019

Jack is still slow and steady and has worked perfectly since installation... The adjustable foot unit is about an inch too tall for at lowest position some sites, based on low hitchball height of our tow vehicle, but we have used the shorter foot from prior jack as an alternate, and that solved problem...

by:

I decided to try this after the warranty ran out on my 4th SmartJack. So far, so good. Installation took about 30 minutes. That's with removing and reinstalling the propane tanks and tray for easier access. The power wire could have been a bit longer and the instructions will be difficult if you are not mechanically inclined. No illustrations. I love the fuse location. Much easier to access. If I don't edit my review, you may assume it's still working.

by:

Has had no problems since I installed it. Works perfectly on my Lance 1475. Only thing in need of improvement is the length of the positive power lead. It’s too short; had to splice in an additional foot of wire to properly route the lead from the jack to the battery.

  • Can the Electric Jack w/ Footplate Be Rotated
Yes, you can rotate the Electric Jack w/ Footplate part # EJ-3520-BBX in one of three ways so that the controls face forward, back to the right, or back to the left. Just remove the nuts/bolts, rotates, then reinstall once you get the jack in the correct orientation for your setup.
