Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The leaf springs provide the attachment points for your trailer's axle, suspending it from the frame of your trailer. Each spring flexes to absorb road shock as you travel, allowing the axle to move somewhat independently of the rest of your trailer. This helps to reduce wear and tear on the trailer and also ensures a smooth ride.

Double-eye leaf springs attach to hangers that are welded onto your trailer. One end of this spring will attach directly to the hanger with a suspension bolt. The other end will attach to shackle straps that are suspended from a hanger. These straps allow the spring to move and pivot so that it can better compensate for uneven pavement. If you have a tandem- or triple-axle trailer, the shackle straps will be attached to the equalizer that connects multiple springs.

To mount this spring, you will need hangers, shackle straps, and suspension bolts. If you are simply replacing a spring, you may still have hangers welded onto your trailer. You should, however, replace your shackle straps because they are usually the first component to wear out. You may choose to replace old suspension bolts as well. It is recommended that you replace the other leaf spring in your setup at the same time. Because springs can sag and elongate as they wear, this new spring may not exactly match the old one, and the alignment of your trailer could be affected.

If you are fabricating a trailer, you will need to purchase a hanger kit for installation. To determine the type of hanger kit that you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring that you have, as well as your axle capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications. Hangers and other suspension components can also be purchased separately if there isn't a complete kit that works for your setup.

The install was relatively straight forward, but it was a lot of work. Took longer than expected, but I cleaned up and painted a few parts in the process. The hardest part was jacking up the trailer and removing the old bolts from the hangers. I was a little hesitant to go from a 4 leaf spring to a 3 leaf spring, but etrailer was a great help in figuring it out. After thinking about it, I think the 3 leaf spring may actually be better because the individual springs are thicker, hence less likely to break.

Comments
It DOES seem counter-intuitive, but the number of leaves in a leaf spring doesnt have any bearing on its weight rating. As long as youre using the properly rated replacement spring, youll be good to go!

  • Replacement Leaf Spring for 3,500 lb Axle with 25-3/4 Double Eye Spring
Thank you for all of the information! For your application I recommend checking out the 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles # e57SR. This measures 25-1/4" from center eye to center eye but that will likely match up with what you have. Most people will measure the leaf spring while it still has a load on it (even if it's just the trailer frame) but we take our measurements while the spring is unloaded. If you relieve pressure off of the leaf spring by raising your trailer...

  • Replacement Leaf Springs For a 2016 Gulf Stream Single Axle Travel Trailer With 4,000LB Axle
The ML-042-00 springs you got do not have the capacity your 2016 Gulf Stream requires. Those springs are only rated for a 3,500lbs capacity. I recommend replacing those springs with the correct 4,000LB Springs # e57SR so you will not have the springs go flat. These Springs have a 25-1/4" eye to eye measurement and your current springs have a 25-1/8" eye to eye measurement.

  • Can Bad Leaf Springs Cause 2018 Gulf Stream Vintage Cruiser Travel Trailer to Lean
The spring measurement you have doesn't indicate if the spring is bad or not. That is nothing more than the length of the leaf spring. Leaf spring lengths also vary within the same capacity, so a trailer that weighs the same could have 26" leaf springs and nothing would be wrong with it. I would inspect the leaf springs with your trailer on the ground and see what they look like. If that leaf spring looks completely flat then I would replace it with one like the # e57SR. It is recommended...

  • Can I Upgrade My Leaf Springs To A Higher Weight Capacity
Yes, you can upgrade to The 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/4 inch Long # e57SR. Going up in weight capacity on your leaf springs will not increase the capacity of your trailer. Using springs that are rated higher than the load applied to them with result in a rougher ride. Be sure to replace both springs on the same axle at the same time. The springs have a sturdy steel construction and the nylon bushings are included. I attached a review video link below.

  • How To Measure Trailer Leaf Springs for Replacement
In order to measure for a new set of trailer leaf springs you'll need to jack the trailer up and let the axles hang freely, then you can measure the unloaded length eye to eye. Once you get the correct length you can obtain the axle capacity which is found by checking the axle tag. The 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles part # e57SR for example measures 25-1/4" long and is for a 3,500 lb axle. I have attached our selection below.

  • 25-1/4 Inch or 26 Inch 4,000 lb Double-Eye Spring For Trailer With 25-1/2 Inch Eye Spacing
Good question, and what happens is that leaf springs elongate over time, and since you mentioned you got measurements of 25-1/2 inches from center eye to center eye and 26 inches under partial load, the best option for leaf springs really is the 25-1/4 inch spring: - 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/4" Long # e57SR If you go with the longer spring, it won't allow for much travel or rebound, and the ride would be exceptionally stiff.

There will be no performance issues whatsoever going from leaf springs with 4 leaves to leaf springs with 3 leaves. So long as you have the correct length, the springs are going to work superbly. The 3-leaf, 4,000 lb leaf springs we have measure 25-1/4" from center of spring eye to center of spring eye: - 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/4" Long # SP-220275 - 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/4" Long # e57SR

  • Replacement Leaf Springs for 2017 Grand Design Imagine 2600RB
Thank you for providing that information. Leaf springs like the ones you have now typically match the axle capacity on your trailer. Although adding leaf springs with a slightly higher capacity won't hurt, it also is not necessary. Based on the leaf springs and and other information I'm sure you have 3,500 lb axles. Your standard diameter for this capacity would be 2-3/8". In addition to the capacity you want the eye to eye length to match, so we are looking at 25-1/4" long leaf springs. I...

  • Recommended Leaf Spring Replacement For A 2019 Dutchmen Kodiak Ultra-Lite 283BHSL
Definitely looks like the springs are being overloaded and need to be replaced. You can use higher rated leaf springs but, the higher you go the stiffer the ride will be. Since we know the weight class with your axles the next step would be to measure from eyelet to eyelet to figure out the correct length. With the leaf spring being flat it's going to measure a bit longer than it typically would so we would just need to find something close to the measurement. At 4,000lbs we have a...
