If you're replacing a busted or rusted-out spring on your trailer - or if you've decided to upgrade to dacromet to avoid rusted-out springs down the line - the first thing you'll need to do is measure your existing leaf springs. Take a look at the measurements above. If these dimensions - and the weight rating - match what you currently have, you should be good to go.

Remember, though, your leaf springs can flatten a bit over time. And if you're measuring your spring while your trailer is fully loaded, the overall length that you get might be a bit more than what you need a brand new, unloaded spring to measure.

Rustproof Your Trailer Suspension with Dacromet

Double-Eye Diagram Dacromet

As you travel across highways and backroads, your trailer's leaf springs are going to corrode and flake over time. This is especially true if you have a boat trailer that's regularly submerged in water. Completely rusted-out springs on trailers are all too common, and these dacromet springs are a great solution to that problem.

Dacromet Versus Rusty Springs Comparison

Longer-lasting springs will save you money and are great for any trailer, but they are a must have for folks who live or play by the water. If you live on the coast, you're probably always rinsing the saltwater off of your trailer to try and keep rust at bay. If you're really worried, you might've even tried to repaint your springs or spray them down with rust inhibitors. But upgrading to these dacromet-coated leaf springs could cut down on or eliminate all of that maintenance, leaving you more time to spend out on the water.

Rust-resistant coatings are graded according to a salt spray rating. Basically, this rating shows the amount of time it takes for a material to show signs of corrosion when exposed to pure, continuous salt spray. We conducted our own salt spray test and found that this dacromet coating lasts up to 744 hours before it begins to deteriorate. Compare that to some other dacromet coatings out there that are rated at just 300 hours - or zinc coatings that don't last for even that long - and you can be sure these springs will last.

Double-Eye Leaf Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Double-Eye Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

I’m happy to say the spare set of leaf springs are safely stored in event of a failure on the road. The original set survived a 3-month trip to Fairbanks after I installed a set of Sumo Springs to help dampen the Alcan, frost heave shock load.

  • Replacement Double Eye Leaf Spring For 3,500 Pound Axle
With your axle leaf springs measuring out to 25-1/4 inches long I recommend the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e28SR for your 3,500 pound axle. This spring has a 5,000 pound weight capacity so it will be a little stiffer for you. The spring has a sturdy steel construction and has a dacromet finish that will provide a superior rust resistance. Make sure to order accordingly you get quantity 1 when purchased. • Replacement Leaf Springs And Aftermarket Crossmember For A 2020 Jayco Eagle HT 29.5BHDS
Hey John, To determine the correct replacement leaf springs for your trailer you'll want to jack up one side to take the pressure off the leaf springs and then can measure from the center of one eyelet to the center of the other eyelet. From there we'll also need to know the axle capacity so that we can choose the correct capacity springs. There should be a sticker on the axle tube that lists the capacity. As for the crossmember, you can go with one of the following options depending...

  • Replacement Leaf Spring for Lippert 702095 Trailer Spring
I looked up the Lippert 702095 leaf spring and it's a 25-1/4 inch long spring that has a 2,600 lb capacity per spring. The closest option we have is the etrailer Dacromet coated part # e28SR which is also 25-1/4 inches long but has a 2,500 lb per spring capacity. Since you have a 5,200 lb axle the next higher rated spring would be the part # e78SR which is a 6k axle rated leaf spring that is also 25-1/4 inches long and Dacromet coated. This would probably be your best choice since it would...

Old springs tend to stretch out as they wear out so in your situation you would want to go with a slightly shorter spring like the 25-1/4 inch length which we have in a 4k capacity part # e57SR, 5k with part # e28SR, or 6k part # e78SR.

  • Picking Out Trailer Leaf Springs for Trailer with 30 inches between Hangers
To pick out the correct suspension components for a trailer you want to do it by most importantly picking out the springs that closely match the capacity of the axle capacity needed. That is priority one. For example if you were using the springs part # 1020, # e66SR, # e34SR, # e28SR, or # e57SR with the hanger kit part # APT5 that comes with equalizers that are 7-3/4 inches long you would want the hanger spacing to be 29-1/2 inches which is pretty close to what you have. All of these...

  • Availability of 25-1/4 inch Leaf Spring for 5,200 lb Axle
We have a pretty close leaf spring that would work well with the part # e28SR which is 25-1/4 inches long from bolt center to bolt center and is for a 5,000 lb axle but we do not have the 5,200 lb version. As long as you wouldn't exceed the 5k axle rating though this spring would work great.

  • Recommended Leaf Spring Replacement for a 3,500 Pound Trailer
Though the etrailer 5,000 pound leaf springs # e28SR will have more capacity than your original leaf springs, they might be a bit overkill. The more heavy duty the spring is, the stiffer they will be, which may cause the trailer to bounce when you hit bumps. These will still fit and work, but I don't think the towing experience is going to be the best. The better option will be to go with the 4,000 pound leaf spring # e57SR. These will still have more capacity than the originals, but will...

I would be happy to help you determine the correct replacement leaf springs for your 2016 Grand Design Reflection 29RS with tandem Lippert 4400lb axles, but unfortunately the axle tags like the one shown in your picture do not have leaf spring information and neither does Lippert as the springs are put on by the RV manufacturer. • How to Measure Length of Double-Eye Trailer Leaf Spring e28SR
Yes, a double-eye leaf spring like # e28SR is measured from the center of one hole to the center of the other when the spring is not under tension. If a spring is installed in the trailer suspension it will tend to measure a bit differently. Also, springs that are very old and well-worn will tend to measure a bit longer than they were when new. So for example if you pull an old spring from your trailer and find it measures 26-inches eye to eye, then it is quite possible that when new...

  • Replacement 25-1/8 Inch Long Leaf Spring for 3500 lb Axle
The PR4 leaf spring which we sell as # e28SR is not interchangeable with the PR4B which we sell as part # e54SR. The springs are different lengths and capacities, with the # e54SR being 25-1/8 of an inch long for a 3500 lb axle and the # e28SR being 25-1/4 inches long for a 5000 lb axle. The correct way to measure for length is to jack the trailer up so the axle hangs free, then measure the eye to eye distance. This might be difficult because the springs are broken, but if they aren't...

I would be happy to help! The longest 5000-5300lb leaf springs we currently offer is the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 5,000-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/4" Long # e28SR but these will be 3/4" shorter than your current leaf springs. The best option would be going with these springs, but having the hangers moved while you are changing the axles. This will make sure that your suspension geometry will still be correct even though you will be using slightly shorter springs.

  • Replacement Leaf Spring for Worn Out 26 Inch Long Leaf Springs
Since leaf springs flatten out as they wear, the best way to determine their actual center eye to center eye length is to put the trailer up on jack stands so the axle(s) hang freely, then measure them. This being said, there's every chance that the actual length of your springs is 25-1/4. You could indeed go with 5K spring like the # e28SR you'd looked at, but keep in mind that increasing the spring capacity WILL NOT increase the load bearing capacity of your trailer. Your current Dexter springs 072-097-00 are a 25-1/4 inch leaf spring that is rated for 5,200 lbs. So we have a couple options that would match the length but not the exact capacity. You'd want the part # e28SR for a 5k rated spring in this length or part # e34SR for 6k rated.

I checked your order notes and the leaf springs you bought last year were the part # e28SR which are for 5k axles. Since this is over the capacity of your axle failure would not have been caused by over loading the trailer assuming you stayed under that figure. Were you on off-road terrain? It's also possible the failure was a fluke or you are overloading the capacity of your trailer.

My recommendation for a replacement is the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 5,000-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/4" Long # e28SR which is rated for 2,500 lbs but is the same length. There aren't holes through the top of the hangers that come with the # APTT5 so there wouldn't be a way to bolt them to your trailer. If the springs you have are 26 inches long you would need to have a distance of 34-3/4 inches between each hanger.
