Double-Eye Leaf Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Double-Eye Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

Working very well. Restored my trailers load capacity.

The new springs added weight capacity, as expected, and are holding up well.

by:

It all arrived earlier than expected. There was 2 broken plastic bushings that were put in the same box as the springs, but I was able to use a couple of the older ones.

They are working great. No issues at all. Great replacements. Highly recommend these.

by:

These springs are holding up well after several thousand miles. I bought these to replace the 3 leaf springs that were on my travel trailer before that had started to bow downward. They seem better able to handle the unexpected nasty bumps I have hit occasionally. They increased the ride height an inch or two, so I readjusted my hitch ball height and load equalizer bars accordingly. The trailer behaves much better now.

by:

Packing is atrocious and shipping is trash. Didn’t ship my whole order, chose to ship via 2 different shippers because it was cheaper for them to do so. Ship dates were not honored as posted on site when ordering.

by:

I suspected my springs were at the end of their life because of the way the trailer was sitting so I ordered them. The next afternoon I rolled over a curb and one spring completely snapped.
I received the leaf springs exactly on time yesterday around 11:30am, I installed them immediately because its my work trailer, and I was back up and running by 3:30. Good deal!

by:

hi carol
I just finished putting the
new spring on my travel trailer, went fine. wanted to mention delivery was on time.

by:

Great set of springs. Thanks for all the information when I called.

by:

Always on time and worth every penny

by:

Good Quality. Fit like a glove. No iss ues.

by:

3500# trailer needed a little stiffer spring, nice fit and quality compared to 3500# springs.

by:

Ordered as a spare have not used yet

by:

They have exactly what I needed and fast shipping. Great customer service. Thanks.

by:

Amazing quality! Holding up really well against these Alaskan roads and trails!

by:

Fit like a glove and delivered on time! Of course we'll need to use them before we can really rate them but so far so good!

by:

Excellent choice for my 2019 Cherokee WolfPup 16BHS. Originally speced with 3500# springs, were completely flat in four years. These returned 3-4” of clearance. Perfect fit. Strongly recommend.

by:

Everything did fit but with some persuasion. Probably my trailer. The shipping however was a week past the “estimated delivery date”. That’s the reason for the three stars. When I called to find out why, I was told that was an estimated date. When your boat trailer is down and you want to fish that’s not a very good estimate.

by:

Received in 2 days. Excellent

Very pleased

by:

What excellent service I received. I received my shipment promptly and one of my items was ordered incorrectly. I wish I had known but was not too bummed. It was probably my mistake. When I called to re-order the rep recommended I go right to the manufacturer for the special part, and gave me the number. etrailer credited my credit card for the incorrect part and because it was not an expensive item did not require me to return it. Thank You!!!

by:

etrailer is an absolutely wonderful company to do business with. I have never had an issue with this excellent business. Shop here with complete confidence. You will never be disappointed.

  • Choosing Between 4,000 and 5,000 Lb Leaf Springs to Replace 25-1/4 3,500 Lb Leaf Springs
It's okay to replace leaf springs with ones rated for more weight and pretty common to do so but keep in mind, the higher you go the rougher the ride will be. If you have a utility trailer then I'd probably opt for the higher rated 5,000 lb springs, 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 5,000-lb Trailer Axles part # e44SR. If you have a camper trailer then I'd probably opt for the lower rated 4,000 lb springs, 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles part # e57SR.

  • Upgrading Brakes and Suspension On 2022 Grand Design Imagine Travel Trailer 2910BH
So I just want to start with the brakes. Due to you having the 4,400LB Lippert axle you will need their Brake Kit # LC66WD for each axle. These brakes are forward self adjusting like the Dexter you were looking at. For a cushioned equalizer I prefer the MORryde # MR27ZR. This will have slightly larger dimensions than your current equalizer but understand the shackles will take care of the width and the height does compress under load so it will be much closer to your vertical dimension....

  • What is Difference Between 6-leaf vs 4-leaf 5,000 lb Trailer Axle Leaf Springs
One of the biggest differences between the 6-leaf 5,000 lb trailer axle leaf spring part # UG34FR and the 4-leaf part # e44SR is the length. The 6-leaf setup is 30 inches long and the 4-leaf setup is 25-1/4 inches long. In general though the number of leaves doesn't affect ride quality or performance to a noticeable degree but when there's more leaves you end up with a taller trailer ride height if the spring is mounted above the axle.

  • Replacement Leaf Springs for 2017 Grand Design Imagine 2600RB
Thank you for providing that information. Leaf springs like the ones you have now typically match the axle capacity on your trailer. Although adding leaf springs with a slightly higher capacity won't hurt, it also is not necessary. Based on the leaf springs and and other information I'm sure you have 3,500 lb axles. Your standard diameter for this capacity would be 2-3/8". In addition to the capacity you want the eye to eye length to match, so we are looking at 25-1/4" long leaf springs. I...

Yes everything you mentioned would work well together on your 2003 Keystone Cougar 276 with a 33 inch wheelbase. The EZ Flex equalizer kit part # K71-652-00 would give you a more cushioned ride quality than you have now, would work great with the 3,500 lb leaf springs # e44SR and the part # APUBR-1 would be correct size u-bolt kit.

  • Replacement, Heavier Duty 26 Inch Leaf Spring For 4,400 lb Axles
We do have a more robust option to replace your 072-078-00 double-eye springs, which are for 4,400 lb axles and have a 2,200 lb capacity, like you mentioned. So for a higher capacity option, I do not recommend going any higher than a 5,000 lb spring. Anything above that is going to give you a very stiff, bouncing, uncomfortable ride. So I recommend going with either of the following: - 6-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,500-lb Trailer Axles - 26" Long # e27SR - 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for...

Since Grand Design is kind enough to list certain parts for their trailers I can confirm you have a 33" wheelbase on your 2020 Grand Design Transcend 27BHS. This means the MORryde Rubber Equalizers # MR87ZR will fit your trailer. Although I'm fairly certain the # MR46ZR is the right wet bolt kit, they do not list the shackle size so I recommend measuring. If you have 2-1/4" shackles then this is the correct kit. If you measure center hole to center hole and find it is 3-1/8" you need #...

  • Can I Upgrade My 3,500 lb Leaf Springs To 5,000 lb Springs If The Measurements Match?
Hey Kevin thanks for your question. There is not much downside to going with the 5,000 lb springs instead of the 3,500 lb. A higher rated spring may make the ride a bit more "chunky" at times, since the spring would not flex as easily. Other than that, the springs can definitely be upgraded as long as the eye-to-eye length matches. So if the current springs measure 25-1/4" long eye-to-eye when not under a load, the 4-Leaf Spring # e44SR will be the one. Keep in mind though, that upgrading...

I can definitely point you in the right direction. Leaf springs can expand up to 1" when under a load. If yours measured 26" with weight on them, I would be looking at a 25-1/4" long spring as a replacement. We also have the # e34SR which is a 5 leaf 25-1/4" long spring for a 6,000 lb axle. Both of these springs are 1-3/4" wide, which is standard width for a double...

Thanks for the picture and all of the information! Those dimensions do not match up to a leaf spring we currently have but I do have a close option which I think will work. When leaf springs are measured for replacement we ask people to jack the trailer up, on one side, to take the weight off of the springs. Over the years the springs will stretch out and a 10 year old trailer could very likely have started out with a shorter leaf spring. Another way to accurately measure is to go from...

From what I have found, you have 4,400 lb axles on your 2010 Keystone Cougar 26BHSWE. Your axles have a hub face measurement of 85" and a 68-1/2" spring center. Unfortunately, 4,400 lb axles are no longer being made so you will also be replacing the hubs and drums. When choosing a replacement axle you typically want to match the hub face measurement.
