Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

The tires are great, nothing out of the ordinary, but they arrived quickly and met my needs exactly.

What I am more impressed with is etrailer's service. I've ordered a few things over the past few years, and in a world where the customer often comes last, etrailer has been top notch with service and communication. I even cancelled an order once because I changed plans. They took care of that immediately, reimbursing my card, no questions asked.

I'm doing this review because I received an email asking me to -- one year after ordering the product. That's smart! Most places want you to review before you've even had a chance to use it. Thanks!

I was surprised to get an invitation to review these tires about a year after purchase. That is a pretty rare commitment to quality and that makes me a pretty big fan of etrailer that's for sure!
When I originally purchase these I recall they were on a back order and took some time to come in, but etrailer was communicative throughout and honored the price at the time of the order even though tire prices were skyrocketing at the time and had gone up considerably by the time they were able to ship. They really are a class act.

As for the tires they are great too!

I had purchased a couple of sets of load range C tires (4.10-8) on rims locally at a big box store prior to this set and had a bunch of problems. They'd air themselves down because of poor fitment to the rim, and dry-rotted and checked within a year of being on the trailer.

These tires on the other hand are excellent in every way. They fit the standard 8" rims properly and hold air and a year later they still look great. They have good side to side traction and handle loading very well. They seem to wear like iron. They are well balanced.

I used these as an up-grade option over 4.10-8 Load Range C tires mounting them myself (I've got a manual tire machine) on the same rims after carefully measuring for clearance on the trailer. This was a good choice for me as even though I don't try to overload the trailer these slightly larger tires provide a better ride under a full load and generally are a tougher tire and better riding.

They travelled 1,300 to KY from MD and back shortly after I mounted them. While in KY I helped my Mom take down an entire garden shed, hauling it, everything that was in it, and a lot of other junk to the landfill in my small trailer (multiple trips). There were times where if I wasn't overloading the trailer, I was definitely at the bitter edge. I felt a lot more confident with these shoes on the trailer than I ever had with any other.

All in all these tires have my confidence and my recommendation!

Tire 5.70-8etrailer offers a great price on products and shipping. Shipping is fast. Quality of products offered is great. I stumbled across their website when I was searching for new trailer tires (tires only) and glad I did. Plus, good to see they are a local company (in the same state).

I bought these tires to replace the old cracked ones on one of my sailbost trailers. Good tires at a good price. These tires are as good as any on the market today. Beware of some of the tire sellers out on the market. I bought from e-trailer because I can trust there products. etrailer sells good stuff at good prices.

  • Taller Tire Recommendation for 4.80-8 Trailer Tire Size
Based on your wheel size and tire diameter the tire size you have now would be the 4.80-8 which the biggest replacement for that would be the 5.70-8 like the # AM10012 which is 2 inches taller.

  • Availability of Load Range C 5.7-8 Trailer Tire
With tire Load Ranges all that really changes between them is the weight capacity. Aside from that you would not get a noticeably different ride quality out of one over the other. For a Load Range C in the size 5.7-8 we have the part # AM10012 which would work well.

  • Can Tubes be Used With Trailer Tire AM10012?
It is not recommended to use tubes in a tubeless tire like the Kenda K353 # AM10012 because it will generate more heat in the tire which can lead to a blowout. If you are looking for a tire with tubes because the wheels on your trailer are designed for tube tires, I recommend replacing the wheel and tire. To do this, you only need to know your wheel's bolt pattern; if you are unsure what it is I have added a link to a help article detailing how to find it. For a 5.70-8 bias tire and wheel...

  • Can Trailer Tires be Downsized from 5.70-8 to 4.80-8 on a Fishing Boat Trailer
Both the 4.80/4.00-8 Trailer Tire, like # AM10002 that you selected, and the 5.70-8 Trailer Tire, like # AM10010, are designed to fit on 8 x 3-3/4 inch rims, so the smaller tires will mount on your rims. The problems come with weight capacity. The 4.80-8 trailer tires are only available in load range B and C while your original size tire is available in load range B, C and D. You will need to make sure that the tire you select is capable of carrying the gross weight of your trailer loaded...

These tires are rated for 65 MPH, which is the standard speed rating for trailer tires. With the same load range and size your current tires have, the Kenda tires will do exactly what you need. I have attached a video review of the tires for your reference.

  • Recommendation for Wider Tire to Replace 4.80-8 Tires on Mower
To replace the existing 4.80-8 size tires on your mower with a wider set I recommend taking a look at a 5.70-8 size tire such as the excellent Kenda K353 # AM10012. This will let you keep your existing wheels while providing you with a tire that's about 1.3 inches wider than what you currently have. Its inflated diameter/height will be larger by 1.9 inches but keep in mind only half of this difference will actually work to increase the ride height of the mower (since the other half is above...

  • Should 5.70-8 Trailer Tire Be Used in Place of 4.80-8
Both of those tire sizes are designed to fit the same rim dimensions of 8 inch diameter and 3-3/4 inches wide. Going with a larger tire when clearance is available will typically give you a better ride. The larger circumference allows the bumps to be a bit smoother, the wheel doesn't end up spinning quite as fast, and the larger tires have higher capacities. If the 5.80-8 that you have now is working well I'd stick with it. If you need a replacement tire you'd want the part # AM10012. I...

This tire is 5.9 inches wide. This tire will be 18 inches diameter when inflated and is rated for 910 lbs at 75 psi. This tire will not only be wider but will almost be 2 inches taller raising your trailer by about 1 inch. For any other tire, you would also need to replace the wheel.

A 5.70-8 load range B tire has a capacity of 715 lbs, which is 1430 lbs per pair. If the weight of the trailer exceeds that amount, then you'd want to go with the load range C, with a 910 lb capacity (1820 per pair). Even if the weight of your trailer doesn't exceed the capacity of the load range B, I'd recommend going with the higher load range. If you just need the tire, go with part # AM10012.
