Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Replaced my 35+ years-old 4.80-12 trailer tires, thank God I never had a blowout at speed, but the sidewalls were dry-rotted bad enough to get new ones for safety.
I switched to the Kenda K353 5.30-12 LR C tires so I don't need to worry about weight limit on my trailer.
Haven't towed it more than a few miles, but it feels great w/ the newbies on the axle.

by:

e trailer, I enjoy making purchases from the online supplier and I recommend eTrailer to everyone that is looking for items. I work part-time for a large towing company in Seville Ohio and I recommend eTrailer to the service manager when he is looking for parts.

by:

Thank you for having Kenda brand trailer tires. I shopped around for a replacement set, only to find frightening prices, or zero stock. This is the second set I ordered from you with speedy service. The second set was even in a bigger box (no squishing).

by:

Needed 3 tires for my boat trailer to match a new one from last year. Etrailer had the best price for the exact tires I needed. One was backordered but they all arrived when promised. Very good service and follow up.

by:

Have towed about 500 miles with no problems.
Not
5 stars do to not knowing longevity yet. Installed on my boat trailer with 16’ fiberglass center console boat as load. Tires run smooth and quiet.

by:

So far so good, not the best, but this size is hard to find, where I live. Trailer came from TSC, now they don't carry this size. So have to order online, from CHINA!

by:

Mounted the tire today looks like it will be a tire that will last a long time periodMounted the tire today looks like it will be a tire that will last a long time.

by:

Awesome products with great service and delivery. I will be ordering again soon. Thank you etrailer!!!

by:

Although the tires are excellent, squishing two of them into an undersized box is now going to require wooden block spacers and a couple of days in the sun to get all the warpage out of them so the beads can seat. Not very pleased about that. Use a bigger box next time, or two boxes. Free shipping can't be costing you that much.

by:

Great Service! Great Price! Fast Delivery! Doesn't get any better service than that! Thanks Etrailer!

by:

THESE TWO ITEMS ARE JUST FINE. AS ADVE RTISED.
THANKS.

by:

Great service, quick ship!

by:

My tires are brand new, so I can't really tell you about longevity, but my transaction with etrailer was nice and shipping was faster than stated.

by:

Good tires!

by:

Order came in quickly & product looks way better than the flimsy tires we order for our trailer from another company. The last tires both blew out on our first trip in our camper. Will post more after we travel in a few weeks on these.

by:

Your service was greatly appreciated
Super
Fast Shipping!!

by:

Tire is good. Great delivery time.

by:

Products are always in good condition, but this tire appeared to have been stored on it's side and was shipped to me warped. took two hours to get the tire to seal. It should not have been shipped in this condition.

The tires were perfect and have lasted just fine and the 1/2" rod for the stabilizers was exactly what was needed.

by:

The moment this tire arrived I couldn't help but admire how round it was. Additionally noted how crisp and clean each groove of tread was. It was like this tire was hand carved by a Japanese craftsman. A true work of art. As I gazed upon it I immediately realized I could never put it into service on my trailer and instead hung it in my living room as a centerpiece. It has hung in my living room for 11 months now stunning passers by daily. Of course there is the opposite end of the spectrum - those who criticize my decoration strategy. Obviously... the latter individuals are banned from my home forever. Upon deep reflection it is surprising how many relationships this tire has cost me. What do they know? Who do they think they are? Of course the real issue here is that my trailer is still not operational and I still need a tire. Quite the conundrum I face. What would you do?

by:

What I needed for my camper

by:

I received the order much faster than was told, order was correct, very reliable company.

by:

Excellent performance

by:

Just bought the Kendra tires for my lawn trailer, have them mounted but haven't had chance to use them yet. I will say however that I have never had a more pleasant sales transaction.
It was easy, efficient, the price was very good and I was kept informed of my order status throughout the process. I.placed my order on Wednesday and had my tires the following Monday . I will use e-trailer again and would recommend them to my friends.

I recently received my order from e-trailer. I ordered a Dexstar wheel, a pair of Kenda tires, a chrome when center cap, lug nuts and screw in studs. I read all the pertinent info supplied as well as check exactly the brands, sizes etc of the parts I was replacing. I was notified by email (from Phyllis) the day following the order placement that their was a shipment delay of the tires, I was supplied with equivalent tire replacements which could have been supplied to keep the order on time or wait a week and get exactly what I originally ordered. I waited and received everything faster then I thought it would have taken. Phyllis kept me updated every couple days on the order progress- so nice! I was a little unsure if the screw in studs would fit but ordered what seemed to be the best match (had to start somewhere & figured I could return if no fit) and studs and lugs fit as stock- exact matches. This was my 2nd order in two years and have had great customer service and better then stock replacement parts, certainly all for a cheaper price then I could ever find in NW Montana! Thank You all at e-trailer!

  • How Much Taller is a 5.30-12 Trailer Tire Compared to a 4.80-12 Trailer Tire
For a 4.80-12 trailer tire, the overall diameter or height is 20.5 inches. For a 5.30-12 it is 21.9 inches. That is a difference of 1.4 inches but you will only see half of that, 0.7 inches, in added height. Please keep in mind that going to a taller tire will raise the center of gravity of the trailer and can lead to the increased likelihood of sway. Going up 0.7 inches may not be much of a factor but you will just need to be aware of the possibility. Also, the 5.30 tire will be 1/2...

  • Does Load Range of Tire Indicate Speed Rating as Well
The letter ratings you mentioned are the Load Ranges. These are related to the weight capacity of the tire and do not reflect the speed rating. The tire part # AM10066 that you referenced has a 65 mph speed rating.

  • What Pressure Should Trailer Tire Rated at 80 PSI Max be Inflated to
Trailer tires should be inflated when they are cold and should be inflated to the max psi rating on the sidewall. In your case you would want to run 80 psi. If you don't inflate them to the max psi figure you will lose weight capacity and potentially cause the tires to overheat and fail.

The Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire - 5.30-12 - Load Range C, # AM10066, will fit a 4 inch wide wheel. You will want to check clearances on your trailer to make sure the taller and wider tire will fit. The 5.30-12 tire size will be 1-1/4 inches taller in overall diameter and 3/4 inch wider.

  • Can a 4.80x12 Trailer Tire be Used as a Spare on a Trailer with 5.30x12 Tires
As a short term solution should you get a flat or blowout you could use a 4.80x12 in place of a 5.30x12. But you will want to get the 5.30x12 fixed or replaced as soon as possible. Having a different size on the trailer can affect capacity, tracking, tire wear, and overall ride quality. I recommend sticking with the 5.30x12 size as a spare to avoid any possible issues. We have numerous tire and wheel combos in this size which I have linked for you. You will want to match the load range...

  • Why Does a 12 Inch Trailer Wheel have a 13 Inch Diameter Overall
Wheel diameters are not measured using the overall diameter. The are measured for diameter where the tire sits so the diameter is less than the overall diameter of the wheel. With 5.30-12 tires you have 12 inch wheels so tire # AM10066 will fit.

  • What Pressure Should Travel Trailer Tires be Inflated to That Have 80 PSI Max on Sidewall
With trailer tires you need to keep them inflated to the max psi rating you see on the sidewall when cold. So in your case you'd want to inflate them to 80 lbs when cold and you'd be set. Lower psi will diminish the weight capacity of the tire as well as cause heat build up. Vehicle tires will have ranges but trailer tires you have to inflate them just to the max figure and you're set. I attached a help article on trailer tires for you to check out as well.

  • Can 4.80-12 Trailer Tires Be Replaced with 5.30-12 Tires
A 5.30-12 trailer tire like the excellent Kenda K353 # AM10066 will be about 0.7 inch wider and 1.2 inches taller than the existing 4.80-12 size tires you currently have mounted. As long as you have the fender and frame clearance available for this slightly larger tire then you can absolutely make this switch. Keep in mind that only half of each of those differences in size will actually affect these clearances. We recommend having at least 3 inches of clearance between the top of the...

  • Are Larger Diameter Trailer Wheel and Tires Easier on Wheel Bearings
Since a larger diameter wheel and tire would spin slower at the same MPH than a smaller diameter wheel/tire yes, in theory a larger diameter wheel/tire is easier on bearings. That said, we don't see smaller setups wear out at a noticeably faster rate than larger diameter setups. For other reasons larger diameter setups are preferred though. They provide a smoother ride quality and typically have higher weight capacities and speed ratings. I attached a link to a page that has all of the...

  • Upgrading to Larger Tire on Trailer with 3-1/2 inches of Fender Clearance
In order to have enough clearance for your trailer to travel over bumps in the road, you will typically want to have at least 3 to 4 inches between the tire tread and the fenders. You will want at least 1 to 2 inches between the side wall and inside of the wheel well. With this in mind, you do not have much room to work with in terms of mounting a larger diameter tire without the risk of having some clearance issues. To move slightly up in size and capacity, I recommend looking at a 5.30-12...

  • How Much Weight Can Trailer with 4.80-12 Tires Hold
A trailer will always be limited to the weakest components. I can't speak about your trailer specifically but the 4.80-12 tires can hold up to 990 lbs for class c. This does not account for the carrying capacity but if you subtract the weight of the trailer it can get you close. If you require a higher load rating then I recommend the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM10066 which is rated for 1,045 lbs per tires.

  • Should Trailer Tires Be Inflated To Max PSI During Colder Weather
When airing up the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire # AM10066, the tire is designed to be inflated to the 80 psi when the weather is colder. The tire can handle the increased pressure that comes with they heat up during driving. The only way it would get to hot is if you exceed the speed rating for the tire. The Kenda Tire # AM10066 has a speed rating of 65 MPH. It has a load range C with a ply rating of 6 and has a maximum load capacity of 1,045 pounds at 80 psi. I attached a review video...

  • Does the Center Pilot Hole of a Trailer Wheel Have to be an Exact Size
There are two different types of trailer hubs that will determine if the pilot hole on a wheel matters or not. First there are hubs that use wheel bolts to secure the wheel to the hub. These are called hub-centric. For this type, the pilot hole has to be exact because that is how the wheel centers on the hub. Then there are the type that use lug nuts to secure the wheel to the hub. These are called lug-centric. The pilot hole can be larger but obviously not smaller because it wouldn't...

I spoke with our tire expert here and they told me that the 12 inch tires you have on your trailer can be balanced, and that perhaps the tire shop you were dealing with may not have the right equipment to handle your tire size. • Why are 5.30-12 Sized Trailer Tires Heating Up Excessively on a Short Trip
If the tires are getting too hot there's a few things to consider. Things like the overloading the tires or trailer, not inflating them to their maximum psi, or exceeding their speed rating will cause the tires to built up too much heat. I also don't recommend having two different tires on the trailer. Even though they're the same size and rating doesn't mean all is created equal. • Tire Blowout on Starcraft Pop-Up Camper
Special trailer tires should always be inflated to their maximum air pressure (in this case, 80 psi). Manufacturers test their tires to determine the optimal inflation level, and 80 psi is common for 12” trailer tires, so inflating to 80 psi won't cause a blowout in itself. The most common cause of tire blowout is overheating. Overheating can be caused by several different factors: -Overloading the trailer. If the load range of the tire is exceeded by the weight of the trailer, this...

  • Stronger, More Heavy Duty Trailer Tire to Replace 4.80-12 Tires on a Boat Trailer
What you could do is go up to the next highest load range. The tire will have a higher capacity and ply rating so it will be more heavy duty and last longer. Please note though that using higher capacity tires will not increase the capacity of the trailer. For a load range C tire in size 4.80-12 you can use # AM10062. It is rated for 990 pounds at 90 psi. It has a 6 ply rating. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. The other option I would recommend...

  • Tire Blowouts on a 20 Ft. Boat and Trailer with 5.30-12 Load Range C Tires
Most trailer tire blow-outs are due to heat build up from an under-inflated tire. Trailer tires have a thicker side wall and when under inflated the thicker side wall generates more heat faster and can cause the tire to fail. You should always inflate a trailer tire to the max psi rating indicated on the tire. Always use tires rated for trailer use. They will have an ST in front of the size. Radial tires track better and run cooler than bias ply tires, especially on pavement, but can handle off-road applications as well.
