Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

I've been running these Karrie radials on my tri-axle trailer, which holds a 17,000lb boat since 2016. Overall I'm satisfied. They are a smooth pulling over the road tire. I have had one let go while towing. But overall, they have been good.

by:

E-Trailer service is the very best. O ordered 4 tires a month ago, only got two, probably due to UPS thinking strike. Called four days ago. What usually takes a week for here on friday. Thank you again E-Trailer.
Satisfied customer again.

Excellent tire for my 16 foot cargo trailer wares great and tow’s excellent on wet roads

by:

I received my tires very soon after placing my order. I ordered these tires as a replacement to what came on my horse trailer. I had put two of the same tires on the trailer the year before. I liked the cost and the quality of the tire. So I decided to replace the other two tires with the same, so as to have the same tires all around on the trailer. I bought them with the mindset to keep everything alike. I am more at ease when pulling the trailer knowing that I have maintained my trailer as well as keeping good tires on it as well. Too many times have I seen people on the side of the road with a blown out tire on a trailer. No problem right? I've even seen trailers unhooked sitting on the side of the road, what would I do with three horses if it were me? Certainly not leave them on the side of the road. I prefer to prevent an emergency then to cause one. Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you. These tires and E-Trailer have allowed me to do so in an affordable manner. Thanks for checking in on me!

by:

Still looking great. Went to Alaska and back as spair tires. Just getting ready to put
them on the trailer. I have purchased the other two so now the test begins. I ran the last pair 30+ thousand miles and still look good but time to change. Have great load capacity for my big 5th wheel. Thanks

  • Replacement Wheels for 4-Star LQ Horse Trailer With 235/85-16 Tires
Rim width isn't likely a concern since most 235/85-16 tires will fit a variety of trailer wheel widths. For example, the # AM10295 fits 16" x 6", 16" x 6-1/2", 16" x 7", and 16" x 7-1/2" rims. The GVWR of the trailer is nice to know so you can make sure the wheel capacity is enough to handle the trailer and whatever it is carrying. We have a few different wheels that could work for your application. If you aren't against powder coat you could use the Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel...

  • Does Pilot Hole Size Have to Match to Use Lionshead Trailer Wheel
The Aluminum Modular Trailer Wheel - 16" x 7" Rim - 8 on 6-1/2 # LHJM513 has a 4.88" pilot diameter and will work for your horse trailer. Ther pilot diameter does not have to match your old wheel because this wheel fits over the lugs of your hub, and not the pilot hole, so you just need the correct size lug nuts to match your hub. This wheel is compatible with the Lionshead Trailer Wheel Lug Nut - 9/16"-18 # LHLR110. For a center cap you can use the Lionshead Trailer Wheel Center Cap...

  • Recommended Trailer Tires to Replace 7.5-16LT Tires on Homemade Smoker Trailer
The Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E, item # AM10295, is the closest tire to the 7.50-16LT tire that we have. Your tire has an overall height of 31.8 inches and a section width of 8.4 inches. This tire has and overall height of 31.61 inches and a section width of 9.37 inches. This will give you a similar height but will add about an inch to the width of your current tire, which based on the open wheel look of your trailer shouldn't be an issue. I've attached some...

  • Replacement Wheels And Tires For 2011 Bighorn 5th Wheel Camper
While the Aluminum Bearcat Trailer Wheel 274-000035 is the correct size and will fit your 2011 Bighorn 5th Wheel, they do not match your existing wheels. If you are looking to match your wheel the Aluminum Sendel Series T02 Machined Trailer Wheel # AM22662 appears to be an exact match for your wheels in the picture. We have the Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10295 that will work well with either wheel. They are radial tires and have a weight rating of 3,640lbs.

  • Should Max PSI on Trailer Tire Sidewall Be Followed When Upgrading Load Range Capacity
Almost all trailer tires are designed so that they should be inflated to the maximum psi listed on the tire sidewall regardless of the weight they are supporting. Inflating them to below this number will essentially reduce the tire's weight capacity to an unknown number, potentially leading to you inadvertently overloading the tires with the trailer's loaded weight. For example the Kenda Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Tire in Load Range E # AM10295 features a maximum load capacity of 3,640...

  • Tire Inflation In Regards To Speed And Heat
Your tires with a max psi of 80 are designed to be filled cold as you stated. They will heat up with friction from the road as well as the heat of the day, but they are not restricted to distance. The max speed is 65 mph unless otherwise stated with a speed rating of L (75 mph), M (81 mph) or J (62 mph). Because you have radial tires, they are better at dissipating heat so they will function better under the driving conditions you mentioned. Many people will put up to 8 hours a day at...

  • Recommended Trailer Tire for Fifth Wheel Trailer that Weighs 15,500 Lbs
I wouldn't recommend subtracting the pin weight of the trailer from the total weight to get what you would need as the tire capacity. Instead you would want to use the entire weight of the trailer divided by the amount of tires the trailer has to determine what each tire capacity you would need. Since you referenced a ST235/85R16 tire I would instead recommend the Taskmaster Tire part # TTWPRG235R16. This has the needed capacity as it has a 4,400 lb capacity at 110 psi and then also has...

I attached a link to a page that has all of the wheel and tire combos we offer that are on a 17-1/2 inch diameter wheel. If you have a single wheel axle the part # LHAS701 would be a great option. It has a capacity of 16-ply rating and 4,805-lb max load at 123 psi. It's bolt pattern is 8 on 6-1/2 inch.

  • Do I Need To Upgrade Wheels To Account for a Higher Psi When Changing Tire Size
For starters, not all 235/80-16 tires have the same max psi rating. However, you are correct in that the wheel you have now must be rated for the max psi of the new tire size. With that being said, the majority of times that a wheel will be limited to a certain psi it is because of the valve stem. Therefore, if you upgrade the valve stem to part # AM20906 which has a 200 max psi rating then you can run any 235/80-16 tire you want on your factory wheels. The majority of rubber valve stems...

The first I recommend is the Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire , part # AM10501. This is a load range F radial tire that has a maximum load capacity of 3,960 lbs at 95 psi. For a load range E tire I recommend part # AM10295. it has a maximum capacity of 3,640 at 95 psi. The Baby Moon wheel covers...

I don't have any information of the correct size tires for your 2003 Bayridge by Damon as the manufacturer does not provide us with this. However, there should be an info sticker up near the tongue which usually lists the tire size. If not then the only option would be contact the manufacturer. Thor Industries bought out Damon RV in 2003 so that is who you need to contact. They will want your VIN. The Provider ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # TTWTRTM2358016E have a 30.79 inch outer diameter with a section width of 9.25 inches. The Kenda Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # AM10295 like what you have is a little larger at 31.61 inches diameter and 9.37 inches wide. • 16 inch Trailer Tire Recommendation for Tandem Axle Trailer that Weighs 15.5k
As far as capacity is concerned for trailer tires as long as the tire capacity is above the total weight of the trailer you would be good. As long as the tires are inflated to their max PSI and the age of the tires is less than 6 years you should be good to go. The Kenda tires part # AM10295 that you referenced have a capacity of 3,640 lbs at 95 psi which in a tandem setup would not have enough capacity for your trailer. • Value of Changing Trailer Tire to Larger 225/75/16 Size
A larger tire size on your trailer in and of itself does not offer any advantages unless your existing tires are under-rated for their application, which would be unlikely in a stock tire. The overall diameter of a ST225/75/15 trailer tire is 28.4-inches. The larger size ST225/75/16 would have an overall diameter of 29.2-inches. If your trailer has enough clearance at the fenders for the taller tire you could certainly use it. Your trailer owner's manual is a good place to check on the...

We do indeed offer ST205/15-14 radial tires from 5 different manufacturers in load range B(1430 lbs), C (1760 lbs) and D (2040 lbs). If you want the best tire available that's manufactured in the USA, I'd recommend the Goodyear Endurance, part # 724864519 this is a D rated radial tire with a 2040 lb capacity per tire or 4080 lb per axle. For something a bit less expensive, you could go for the Westlake # 274-000012, which is also a radial and has the same weight rating.

This is a really nice quality radial tire that will give you a high load range and great traction especially on highway driving. You will also need a valve stem and I recommend the Americana Metal, Bolt-In Valve Stem - 1-1/4" Long - Over 100 psi, # AM20906. This combination will offer great results without any tubes in the tire.

  • Why do Load Range E and F ST235/85R16 Radial Tires from Karrier have the Same Max Air Pressure
Max air pressure does not always correlate with the weight capacity increases of tire Load Ranges. The part # AM10501 has a capacity of 3,960 lbs at 95 psi. The # AM10295 which is the same size and brand but Load Range E instead of F has a capacity of 3,640 lbs at 95 psi. Both tires require the same psi be inflated in them to get the full capacity, but due to the construction of the tires they have differing capacities.

  • Does Outside Temperature Affect If Trailer Tire Gets Max PSI Figure
Yes, regardless of the temperature outside you do need to inflate trailer tires like the part # AM10295 to the max PSI listing on the sidewall. So if your tire calls for 65 as max PSI you'd need to go with that number regardless of temperature.

  • Weight Capacity of 5th Wheel Trailer Tires Required Accounting for King Pin Weight in GVWR
Technically you do remove the tongue weight of the trailer from the tire load capacity for the GVWR. The tires only need to be rated for the weight that is actually on the tire, so the axles can even be rated slightly lower. This however is not normally the case. In most instances the axles and especially the tires are rated higher than the required capacity for the GVWR. For 15 inch tires the load rating of E is the highest rating we carry. If you have clearance around the tire for a larger size you could use it. Remember to always inflate a trailer tire to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. The larger size of 235/85-16 will have a bit higher capacities typically and a very slightly larger size than the size you currently have of 235/80-16. If you need to replace all the tires you want to go with the part # AM10295 that you referenced which has a capacity of 3,640 lbs at 95 psi. • Can I Tow With Tires Under Inflated
Yes, you probably need to inflate the tires to 110 psi. Check with the manufacture of the tires to be sure but most trailer tires should be inflated to their max psi. Running them at 70 psi underrates the tires so they aren't functioning at their max capacity. Tires are designed to carry a maximum amount of weight and they can't achieve that if they're under inflated. Also, the tire being under inflated causes it to wear unevenly decreasing the tire's efficiency and life span. There...

You will want to go by the lowest rated component so if the tire is rated for 3,960 pounds and the wheel is rated 3,750 pounds then you would need to go by the 3,750 pounds. If you have the trailer loaded to the max gross vehicle weight rating then it would exceed the capacity of 4 tires rated for 3,520 pounds each. So a higher capacity tire is a good idea. If using the same wheels rated for 3,750 pounds then 4 higher capacity tires would have a combined capacity of 15,000 pounds. That...
