Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

I received my tires very soon after placing my order. I ordered these tires as a replacement to what came on my horse trailer. I had put two of the same tires on the trailer the year before. I liked the cost and the quality of the tire. So I decided to replace the other two tires with the same, so as to have the same tires all around on the trailer. I bought them with the mindset to keep everything alike. I am more at ease when pulling the trailer knowing that I have maintained my trailer as well as keeping good tires on it as well. Too many times have I seen people on the side of the road with a blown out tire on a trailer. No problem right? I've even seen trailers unhooked sitting on the side of the road, what would I do with three horses if it were me? Certainly not leave them on the side of the road. I prefer to prevent an emergency then to cause one. Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you. These tires and E-Trailer have allowed me to do so in an affordable manner. Thanks for checking in on me!

by:

I bought a set of four of these tires & wheels over a period of time. Each one of the tires developed a bulge & have been replaced with a better quality of tire. The wheels are still in use.

by:

Still looking great. Went to Alaska and back as spair tires. Just getting ready to put
them on the trailer. I have purchased the other two so now the test begins. I ran the last pair 30+ thousand miles and still look good but time to change. Have great load capacity for my big 5th wheel. Thanks

by:

Review from a similar Karrier Radial in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Unfortunately these only lasted 2 years and less than 8,000 miles before the belts "slipped" and the tires ballooned and got tall and round. I pull a 10k GVWR two-axle toy hauler weighed at 7800 lbs on the axles. These survived two 2600 mile trips and a few shorter trips at up to 65 mph. 3 of 4 tires ballooned and I replaced them before they blew. I filed a Kenda warranty claim and they denied that they could see anything wrong in the pictures. etrailer said Kenda handles warranty claims for these.

Comments
Kenda does indeed hold a 5-year limited warranty on these tires. It seems that our customer service department is in the process of getting that warranty claim issued for you.

Tire was back ordered, I waited, not needed right away. New tire has a date code of 5/21, 14 months old already. Also ordered a halogen light. The box was 2.5 times too big. Halogen light was unwrapped and unprotected in the box. I hope it works. Big fail on this one!

Comments
I am so sorry that this happened to you! Was your light damaged in any way?
-- Etrailer Expert Sierra K - 07/15/2022
Light was scratched, and cover had rubber marks on it from the tire. I was replacing an identical light. My old cover was fine, so I used what I had. I made it work.

Tire order was delivered on time with all accessories. I put 75psi in the Kenda Kendra ST205 75R Class D tires and installed on my McClain tandem axel trailer. Perfect match for the trailer. Perhaps i will write a review after a year of fishing. I normally travel 5k miles a year fishing from Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida.

Review from a similar Karrier Radial in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Delivery was fast and wheels were individually boxed in heavy shipping cartons. Rims and tires were perfectly mounted and were blemish free.

The styling and quality of the rims are outstanding, as are the 8 ply tires. Huge improvement in appearance and load handling over the galvanized rims and 6 ply tires.

The customer service at etrailer is the best I've experienced in a long time. You can buy from etrailer with confidence.

Ordered 5/26 with a promise of delivery 6/3 .. tires were delivered 5/28 .. $10 less than my local dealer if he could even get this model .. he is a Kenda dealer, he did relate Kenda trailer tires are the best out there. etrailer is the best.

Comments
Been on over a year still looking like new. Tread wear is excellent, no indications of any stress on sidewalls, no cupping or any othe indication of uneven wear. Thoroughly satisfied. Would buy again, but given how they are wearing it may be a few years.

Great fit. Was just what I wanted. Was time to get rid of the old bias ply tires. Used them for a couple of hundred miles and over some rough mountain roads. Held up well. Looks like a winner!

  • Width of Kenda Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10295
The Kenda Karrier ST235/85R16 Trailer Tire # AM10295 referenced in your question matches the size and load range of your existing tires so it should have the same overall size. This particular tire has a section width of exactly 9.347 inches so you can also compare this to what you currently have to be sure. This is a really nice radial trailer tire that will work great as a replacement on your gooseneck trailer. It features a maximum load of 3,640 pounds at 95 psi. Assuming you have...

  • Trailer Tires for 11,000 Pound Tandem Axle 5th Wheel Trailer with Tires Distorting on Tight Turn
Trailer tires have a much firmer sidewall than other tires. It is designed this way because on some turns you will have tire scrub like what you are describing but it normally is an issue for the tread more than the sidewall. It is best to avoid this as much as possible as it could absolutely damage the tire if there is too much lateral force on older tires, but the sidewalls are made to withstand quite a bit. Since you can be looking at a max weight capacity of 14K you need a tire rated for at least 3.5K so that it can accommodate up to that weight. For your application I recommend using the Kenda Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10295 because it has a Load Range E, which is 3,640 lbs at 95 psi for single tires or 3200lbs at 95psi for dual applications. • Can I Tow With Tires Under Inflated
Yes, you probably need to inflate the tires to 110 psi. Check with the manufacture of the tires to be sure but most trailer tires should be inflated to their max psi. Running them at 70 psi underrates the tires so they aren't functioning at their max capacity. Tires are designed to carry a maximum amount of weight and they can't achieve that if they're under inflated. Also, the tire being under inflated causes it to wear unevenly decreasing the tire's efficiency and life span. There...

  • Does The Ply Rating Of A Trailer Tire Matter
The sidewall is of a ST (special trailer) tire is built with a larger diameter steel wire to meet additional load requirements. The LT (light truck) tire is not designed to carry as much weight as a ST tire can because they are made specifically for trailers. LT tires can sometimes be used on trailers but ST tires are recommended. Modern trailer tires do not use the same ply rating system that corresponds to load range like they used to. The ply rating doesn't necessarily indicate the...

  • Do Trailer Tires Need to be Replaced By Age
Trailer tires such as the Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10295 do need to be replaced approximately every 6 to 7 years even if the tire seems like it is in good shape because tires older than that can be susceptible to cracking or dry rot. • Comparing ST235/85-16 and LT235/85-16 Tires for a Trailer
The Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire part # AM10295 is a special trailer (ST) tire therefore it is designed to be used on trailers because it has a much stronger sidewall which is needed for trailers due to the constant up and down bouncing. In comparison to a light truck (LT) tire, these do have stronger sidewalls than passenger (P) tires so they can be used on trailers although I do recommend special trailer (ST) tires instead.

  • How to Determine Max Tire Inflation and How to Monitor Air Pressure and Temperature
The recommended tire pressure isn't standard for a tire size and will depend on the load range and ply rating among other things. The tire's recommended pressure will be printed on the sidewall, but a tire like the Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # AM10295 has a pressure recommendation of 95psi when being filled at ambient air temperatures. You will want to look at the info printed in raised type on the side of your tires to determine the specific recommended inflation...

  • How is Trailers Overall Weight Capacity Determined
The weight rating of a trailer is not something we can really be an authority on but we can help you determine it. It comes down to the individual rating of everything and then whatever the lowest rated item is becomes the overall capacity due to your setup really only being as strong as its weakest link. It doesn't make sense that a trailer would have two 12k rated axles and then be overall rated for 32,500 lbs but you'd have to bring that up with the manufacturer as that could be in error.
