Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Highway Legal 4.80/4.00-8 Tire that Can Go Up to 65 MPH
You are correct and I do have a tire for you. However, you don't want to use the Kenda Loadstar K371 Bias Trailer Tire - 4.80/4.00-8 item # AM10002 on the highway at 70 mph. Instead you will want the Kenda K371 Bias Trailer Tire - 4.80/4.00-8 - Load Range C item # AM10004. This tire is the same size but is a Load Range C tire. It is rated to be used on the highway but has a maximum speed of 65 mph when inflated to 90 PSI. This is our highest rated 4.80/4.00-8 tire. For a great tire and...

  • Wheel Capacity of Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel
The # AM30050 Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel has a wheel capacity of 910lbs. The tire capacity has a maximum load of 745 lbs at 90 psi as you stated. You are correct in assuming that this can only carry 745 lbs, but that is just for the individual tire. Since you would have at least 2 on your trailer, the pair would be capable of holding 1,490 lbs since the weight of the trailer will be distributed between the two tires. I have attached a video review of...

  • Does 4.80/4.00-8 Trailer Tire Need to be at Max PSI for Lightweight Trailer
It's not uncommon for trailer users to deflate the tires for lightweight trailers, but when we've spoken with our trailer tire manufacturers, like Kenda with their 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire # AM30050, they've said to stick with the psi rating on the sidewall of the tire. Some tire manufacturers have charts that show what to put the psi rating at when hauling different loads so if your manufacturer has something like that feel free to follow it, otherwise it's best to go with the rating...

  • Can Camper Trailer Weight Capacity Be Increased By Changing Tire Load Range Rating
Thank you for the photo of your camper trailer. When it comes to a trailer's weight carrying capacity the lowest-rated part of the trailer - either the frame, axle, hubs, wheels or tires - will determine if more capacity can be added. If the tires were the lowest-rated component then changing them to another size or simply to a higher load range in the same size could give you more capacity/safety margin. But if the tires are not the "weakest link" then upgrading them does not add capacity...

  • Replacement Hub and Wheel For Unitized Hub on 2000-lbs Axles with Inner Bearing L44649
I have a solution for you on this, but we do not have any unitized assemblies available, so you would need to get a new hub and wheel for your trailer. I'll also mention that the # AKIHUB-440-2-2K won't work for you since the grease seal does not match up with the 1.250" ID of the National seal you mentioned. However, you can use the CE Smith Trailer Hub Assembly w/ Carrying Case for 2,700-lb Axles - 4 on 4 - Pre-Greased # CE13109 which use # L44649 inner and outer bearings and have a grease...
