Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

I received my boat trailer tires from etrailer sooner then I expected. I am very pleased with the product. I would definitely recommend them to all of my boating and fishing friends.

by:

Wheel / tire assembly was delivered as ordered. And as usual, great service from etrailer.com

by:

Speedy delivery and excellent sizing guide that allowed me to confirm I was purchasing the correct tires and wheels. Thanks!

by:

The reservoir I fish at has a questionable ramp. I removed the 12 inch tires and replaced them with the 8 inch. This puts it a little closer to the water and I don't have to back in as far. Retrieval will also be better. Fast, accurate service with a very reasonable price. Thanks for everything.

by:

Well made tire and it will make a nice spare in case I need it.

by:

I put the tires with wheels on my trailer this morning. Haven't had an occasion to use the trailer to transport my riding mower, but the wheels and tires look fine. I had some misgivings about buying wheels and tires online because of the hassle of returning them should they not fit. The description of the of the tires and wheels was complete and they fit my trailer just fine. I'll buy again from etrailer.com.

I ordered the tire/wheel as a spare for a Mini-Mate pop-up tent trailer. It did not come with a spare. I also ordered the mounting bracket. Both arrived in same box and were delivered very promptly. I am very satisfied with product as well as the service and highly recommend this company.

by:

Upgrading my two boat trailers and tires, rims and lugs a priority. E-trailer had both sizes I needed and delivery was very prompt.
Last year I ordered new taillights.
Two years ago ordered car hitch.

Best resource for all things trailers.

A year later and still holding up like day one. Perfect tire for small yard utility trailer.

by:

My order arrived much sooner than I expected. Packaging is always excellent and the service from the E-trailer team members is beyond compare. Online site is super easy to search and prices are excellent. I needed the wheel/tires for a Kayak trailer. Thank you again etrailer and Natalie in particular for all her help!!

by:

The quality of the products was only surpasses by the speed with which I received then. The tires and rims seem to be top quality. Of course, I will know more after a few miles on them.

I will be hauling my boat and jet skis on the interstate and needed better equipment as well as spares for out on the road. I certainly felt that these were affordable and will make very cheap insurance for not leaving my boat on the side of the road.

I would certainly recommend etrailer.com to anyone.

by:

This tire and wheel was a perfect replacement for my old, under-rated set. They came fully pressurized ready to be mounted. I'm impressed with the tread, they should last a long time.

The packaging for the items shipped was heavy duty and delivered fast.

by:

The product I wanted, great price, excellent customer service. Staff quickly resolved a problem

by:

Outstanding customer service. Fast shipping. Products appear to be American quality. Looking forward to future business with etrailer.com

by:

first time ordering tires on line . your tire and wheel infro was a great help. price also seem very reasonably hope not to need wheel and tires again if so you will be hearing from me . also quick delivery , like that

by:

Products came very quickly and were well packaged to avoid damage. Have no installed light kit yet but it appears to be what was advertised. Their prices on tires on wheels makes it no point in replacing tires themselves when you consider labor.

Great service from etrailer. Repeat cus tomer

  • Can 18.5x8.5-8 Trailer Tires be Replaced with 4.80/4.00-8 Tires on a Snowmobile Trailer
Kenda tire and wheel combo # AM30060 is a great option as long as the weight capacity is enough for the gross trailer weight. One of these tire and wheel combos is rated for 745 pounds at 90 psi. So for 2 of them on a single axle that would be a total capacity of 1,490 pounds. The center pilot hole is 2.8 inches in diameter and it has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. If that is enough for the trailer then you will be good to go.

  • Measurements of Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8 White Wheel
The Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM30060 will be approximately 6-1/2" from the lug nut hole to the ground. That will have little bearing on the tire clearance, however. The most important things to know are that it is overall 16.1" in diameter and is 4.7" wide. These numbers will be the determining factor on if you have enough clearance for the tire to fit without interfering with your fender or sidewall. I've added a link to a...

  • Offset and Backspacing for Rim and Tire Part # AM30060
Trailer rims like the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30060 have a zero offset, meaning the mounting flange is dead center of the rim. Sounds like you are looking for the backspacing. Since this wheel has a zero offset all you need to do is take the width of the rim (3-3/4 inches), add 1 inch for both wheel lips (4-3/4 inches now), and then divide by 2. Which equals 2-3/8 inches. 2-3/8 inches is the figure you are looking for. Now would using a 2 inch spacer...

  • Shorter Wheel Tire Recommendation to Fit Trailer Inside Barn Door
The part # AM30060 does have the correct bolt pattern to allow it to bolt up to your trailer hub. As long as your trailer does not have brake assemblies these rims would fit over the hubs and work well from a fit point of view. The weight capacity of this wheel/tire setup is 745 lbs though which wouldn't be enough for your 2,500 lb trailer. Your best option would be the part # AM31215 that will be 6 inches shorter than what you currently have. This has the right bolt pattern, enough capacity...

  • Replacement Wheel and Tire For Trailer With 4.80/4.00-8 Tires
The wheel diameter is the bead seat to bead seat measurement. You probably measured the overall diameter which is why you got 9". If you look at the picture below where the # AM30060 tire diameter was measured you can see that the wheel is approximately 9" across. For your log splitter wheel and tire combination, the pilot hole in the center will be much larger than the hub center. This is not an issue as the wheel will bolt to the hub and be centered based on the lug studs and lug nuts. All trailer spindles will have the single nut holding that wheel bearing in place as you stated. Usually a smaller-size 8-inch trailer wheel like the Kenda # AM30060 is not fitted with a hub cap. The small projections you noticed (and there are actually 3 of them on this item) are not intended to hold a hub cap although on larger wheels this can be the case. These small round nubs are simply a result of the tooling used for production of the wheels.
