Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

Totally rebuilt a small jet ski trailer to haul 450 lbs. of custom shutters from Michigan to south Florida, 1,575 miles. I also installed new Timkin bearings. Pulled the trailer over a two day period with absolutely no tire, wheel or bearing issues. I75 speeds of 75 mph. Absolutely no issues.

by:

That was a terrific transaction. The wheels arrived very promptly and fit perfectly. I need caps for the hubs on the trailer. Could you please assist me with that?
Thank you kindly

Joseph, I would love to give you a wheel hub cap however we do not currently carry one that would work for you. You will need a cap that fits a pilot hole diameter of 2.80 inches and works with a 4 bolt 8 inch rim.

by:

Etrailer sent me tires that are over 2 years old.... Date code on the tires were 1822.... which is they were made in week 18 of 2022.. Sending them back and buy somewhere else..

by:

Exact parts that were needed for my trailer, Fast shipping and excellent prices.I will be using etrailer for any parts that may be needed in the future.

by:

The reservoir I fish at has a questionable ramp. I removed the 12 inch tires and replaced them with the 8 inch. This puts it a little closer to the water and I don't have to back in as far. Retrieval will also be better. Fast, accurate service with a very reasonable price. Thanks for everything.

by:

Wheel / tire assembly was delivered as ordered. And as usual, great service from etrailer.com

by:

Perfect replacement for a large kayak kayak trailer.

by:

I put the tires with wheels on my trailer this morning. Haven't had an occasion to use the trailer to transport my riding mower, but the wheels and tires look fine. I had some misgivings about buying wheels and tires online because of the hassle of returning them should they not fit. The description of the of the tires and wheels was complete and they fit my trailer just fine. I'll buy again from etrailer.com.

The tires have never let me down.

by:

Speedy delivery and excellent sizing guide that allowed me to confirm I was purchasing the correct tires and wheels. Thanks!

by:

needed new tires for a jetski trailer. nobody had any in stock locally or was going to charge an arm and a leg to have tires mounted on the current rims. your price was cheaper and i received the product in less than 3 days from ordering it. was very satisfied.

A year later and still holding up like day one. Perfect tire for small yard utility trailer.

by:

I ordered the tire/wheel as a spare for a Mini-Mate pop-up tent trailer. It did not come with a spare. I also ordered the mounting bracket. Both arrived in same box and were delivered very promptly. I am very satisfied with product as well as the service and highly recommend this company.

by:

Upgrading my two boat trailers and tires, rims and lugs a priority. E-trailer had both sizes I needed and delivery was very prompt.
Last year I ordered new taillights.
Two years ago ordered car hitch.

Best resource for all things trailers.

by:

My order arrived much sooner than I expected. Packaging is always excellent and the service from the E-trailer team members is beyond compare. Online site is super easy to search and prices are excellent. I needed the wheel/tires for a Kayak trailer. Thank you again etrailer and Natalie in particular for all her help!!

by:

Wonderful

by:

The quality of the products was only surpasses by the speed with which I received then. The tires and rims seem to be top quality. Of course, I will know more after a few miles on them.

I will be hauling my boat and jet skis on the interstate and needed better equipment as well as spares for out on the road. I certainly felt that these were affordable and will make very cheap insurance for not leaving my boat on the side of the road.

I would certainly recommend etrailer.com to anyone.

by:

Quality items shipped fast and arrived when they said it would !! I Will be doing business with this company again.

by:

This tire and wheel was a perfect replacement for my old, under-rated set. They came fully pressurized ready to be mounted. I'm impressed with the tread, they should last a long time.

The packaging for the items shipped was heavy duty and delivered fast.

by:

Nice little tire and rim for my trailer. Shipped fast and was installed in ten minutes.
Loved the whole experience especially the price.

by:

Products came very quickly and were well packaged to avoid damage. Have no installed light kit yet but it appears to be what was advertised. Their prices on tires on wheels makes it no point in replacing tires themselves when you consider labor.

by:

I was VERY impressed with the tutorial videos on measuring my existing wheels, the ease to order, the quick shipment/ delivery in spite of the restrictions caused by the Covid-19. The wheels were packaged well, and the quality was exactly what I had hoped. Best prices I found, excellent service and top quality etrailer is the total package, the way all companies should be. Thanks so much!

  • Smallest Diameter Trailer Tire For 8 Inch Wheel
The smallest diameter tire for an 8 inch trailer wheel is the 16.1 inch diameter Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 # AM30060. This will also work with your 1/2"-20 bolts and would be the only option. Just keep in mind the # AM30060 has a max 745 lb per-tire capacity.

The Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30060 will fit in place for a 4.80-8 tire size. The wheel has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern so as long as that matches your existing bolt pattern it will work. If you just want the tire and want to keep your old wheels you can use # AM10004.

  • Can An 8 Inch Trailer Wheel Be Switched With A 12 Inch Trailer Wheel?
There are a couple of things to consider if you decide to swap out your 8" trailer wheel like the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30060, with a larger 12" tire like the Aluminum Spoke Wheel for Malone MicroSport and MicroSportXT Trailer # MPG469. The first, which it sounds like you've already thought about is the height issue. When going from an 8" wheel to a 12" wheel you are going to gain about 4" of additional wheel diameter. Since you've already mentioned...

  • Can a Load Range C Tire be Used Instead of a Load Range B Tire on a Trailer
First, make sure that you stay within the gross trailer weight capacity for your trailer. If that 200 pounds extra puts you over the gross trailer weight capacity then you will want to carry that extra weight in the vehicle. Going with a higher capacity tire will not increase the gross trailer weight capacity. With that said since you have a long way to go and such small tires, having a stronger tire in the same size would help to reduce the chance of anything happening to the tires. For...

The valve stem that comes with the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel part # AM30060 is rated for the max psi range of the tire which is 90 psi therefore you won't have any issues. If you feel more conformable with a higher rated valve stem we do offer the Americana Metal, Bolt-In Valve Stem part # AM20906 which is rated for over 100 psi.

I do have an option for you but it doesn't look like you have room for larger tires without modifications and that's how you'll obtain a higher speed rating. That said, we do offer wheel/tire combos in the size you need with a slightly higher speed rating of 65 mph, the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel part # AM30060 is what I recommend. Unfortunately, these smaller trailers are really not designed to be pulled at high speed.

Be sure to triple check your measurement of the end of the hub cap to make sure before you purchase. The largest pilot hole I have for that size wheel and tire is from Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM30060 . The pilot diameter is 2.8". It's a 4.00-8 Non Radial Trailer Tire and has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. I do have a 12 inch tire with a pilot hole measuring 3.19" # AM30580. • Speed Rating of the Kenda Tire and Wheel 4.80/4.00-8 on a 8 Inch Wheel
Unless otherwise stated all specialty trailer tires are rated at 65 miles per hour. This is the max miles per hour this tire can sustain due to the excess heat build up that will occur if you go any faster. I would not recommend exceeding that speed for any length of time. I attached an FAQ article on trailer tires for you to check out also.

  • Recommended Replacement Tire & Wheel for Motorcycle Trailer
Unless otherwise noted all trailer tires are only rated for up to 65 miles per hour. Going faster than that causes heat to build up which then causes the tires to fail. For a white wheel and tire that would work as a replacement and would match your current size you would want the part # AM30060. This setup would have a maximum capacity of 760 lbs per tire at 90 psi. With trailer tires you want to have them inflated to their max PSI at all times. Any less pressure will cause the capacity...

If your current wheel uses a 4 on 4 bolt pattern then I recommend going with the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30040. This has a Load Range C which means that the max load for it is 745 lbs at 90 psi. If, however, your current wheel uses the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern you will want to go with the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8...

Usually a smaller-size 8-inch trailer wheel like the Kenda # AM30060 is not fitted with a hub cap. The small projections you noticed (and there are actually 3 of them on this item) are not intended to hold a hub cap although on larger wheels this can be the case. These small round nubs are simply a result of the tooling used for production of the wheels.
