Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

Just finished a harbor freight 4 x 8 trailer and turning it into a kayak trailer. Class B tires came with the trailer and I am immediately replacing them with the Kenda Class C 4.80 x 12" from etrailer.com. This gives me a higher speed tire and at least I can "feeL" safer at 65 mph or so if I have to speed a little to go around a car or on the Interstate. Very impressed with these tires and fast shipping received. Here is picture of trailer.

My Kenya tires still going strong 1 year later. I have about 3000 miles on the tires with most trips at 60-70 mph. I have repacked my wheel bearings at 1500 miles just because I like to err on the safe side. No flats, no problems - Highly recommend.

by:

Great customer service and unbeatable prices! Don’t bother searching for a better product and price.

Great tires and wheels. Over 1000 miles of travel on my 4x8 camping flatbed trailer and they still look like new. Just make sure you check pressure and keep them covered from the sun. I tow around 65 mph and they don’t heat up and keep cool with about a 1500 pound load.

by:

After looking around for a while in all local store for the right tires size for my trailer without any luck a friend send me the link to etrailer and after browsing their website for 2 minutes I found the tires I needed, I ordered them and received them within a week. Tires look exactly as shown on their website and the shipping was free ( purchase over XXX.00 I think. I highly recommend etrailer.

by:

Very nice tires for a great price. I installed them on our little StarCraft Tent trailer, upgrading from the stock 8inch tire/wheel combination. Absolutely zero modification on this particular trailer, both on the hubs and the rear spare tire mount. Raised the stance a bit and trails better than ever. I have approx 1000 miles on them and so far no wear to speak of. A most beneficial upgrade!

by:

I have more confidence and feel safer with the new tires (4.80-12) than the factory tires (4.80-8) installed on my 12 foot boat trailer. I feel that the trailer can be pulled at a higher speed without fear of a blow out which is necessary under certain driving conditions. Delivery of the new tires was super fast from etrailer. Thumbs up.

by:

Tires and rims have performed well, put roughly 2k miles on them so far in the first year(6 camping trips in our little tent trailer)

by:

Etrailer.com once again came through with good quality tires and rims for a better price than I could find locally. Also local stores only sell Load range B while these are Load Range C. And Free Shipping! Also Etrailer.com has a terrific website, loaded with information to help choose the correct tire/rim/accessories that will fit, no hassle. I bought these 12" tires to replace the 8" ones on a boat trailer. They look great and give me more clearance. All of my trailers use tires and rims from Etrailer. Thanks.

by:

I have only used the trailer a couple of times, but the wheel/tire assembly works great and still looks like new after a year out in the weather.

by:

Fast service, arrived a day early, good packaging, fantastic and attentive personal communication, quality product with great weight ratings. Thanks Guys!

by:

I bought these tires as a major upgrade from 8" to 12" tires on my 22 year old popup and have traveled cross country and back with a very smooth ride. It required adding another 3" of clearance for the larger tires, which also gave me more ground clearance. I buy all my trailer accessories from etrailer!

by:

The products were just as described. I installed them on a small utility trailer to gain ground clearance when 4 wheeling. I ordered them last Friday and they were shipped free within hours. I received them today (Wednesday), put them on and I couldn't be happier. Perfect fit. Would highly recommend.

by:

Not much to say other than its a trailer tire and the quality is good after a year. Tire shows no visual sign of wear so far, so I am pleased with the performance so far.

by:

Outstanding! Excellent price, Same Brand wheel/Tire combo that I could by Locally, But with etrailer I got 3 for what 2 would cost me locally and I got load C instead of B. Shipping was fast, and free. I added a pic of these wheels mounted on my "work in progress" trailer. Also email updates were a nice personal touch!

by:

Great wheel and tire. I ordered 3 each, one for a spare.
1 box with one tire came yesterday, the other 2 came today.
I wish they would have came all at once since the tracking number was for the 1 wheel and I was not provided with the other tracking number I did not know if I was getting the whole shipment.
I used them on an old pop up trailer that I converted to haul my dirt bike

by:

Product was as listed

by:

The tire was exactly as advertised and met my needs. I have never had a negative experience dealing with eTrailer.

by:

Had these tires before and always work great. I’m a traveling veteran and camp all over the US. Have to make sure I spend my grandchildren inheritance (even if it’s small)

by:

Speedy delivery

by:

Great upgrade from the old 8" wheel and tire.

by:

Very impressed with the wear thus far of this tire. Driven 1300 miles already and it still looks great. Handled up to 65 mph. No problems.

by:

I just want to say that it’s just as cheap or cheaper to order these from etrailer as it is to order tires and have them mounted. And these are Kenda!

by:

Fit perfectly, and shipped really fast! Very well satisfied.

by:

Rim and tire arrived within one week of ordering. Product was exactly as shown on web site and as ordered. It is installed on an older 4'X 8' open trailer of 2,000 lb capacity I use for hauling fire wood and kayaks. I have not used the trailer since installing the new wheel so cannot comment on the tire performance, but from my inspection it appears ideal for the intended use.

by:

Great upgrade from my little 8" wheels on my pop up camper. Ordered on Wednesday and it was delivered on Friday.

by:

I ordered two tires for a trailer, and they were here in 2 days. High quality tires with rims at an affordable price. This is why I keep coming to eTrailer for all our trailer needs.

  • Replacement Wheel and Tire for 1999 Flagstaff 208 With 4.80-12 Tires
Based on what I have found, it looks like the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel # AM30620 is a direct replacement for your 1999 Flagstaff 208. It has a 4 on 4 bolt pattern and a maximum load of 990 lbs at 90 psi. If you need a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern you can use the # AM30660 instead. If you have the clearance I would recommend switching to radial tires like the # AM35351DX (4 on 4) or # AM31199DX (5 on 4-1/2). These have automotive grade tread and will hold up better...

  • Replacement Larger Tires for a 5x8 Utility Trailer
Hey Andy, thanks for reaching out! It sounds like you might have a 4.80-12 tire like the Kenda # AM30620, so to upgrade you can use a 5.30-12 tire, like the Taskmaster Radial Tire # TT53012C which is going to have about a 21-1/2" diameter and about a 5-1/2" section width. These install on the same wheel so you'll be able to have a tire shop swap them out for you. If these tire sizes don't match what you have, please let me know what the big lettering on the sidewall of your current tires...

  • 12 inch Trailer Wheel and Tire with Higher Speed Rating
I suggest moving to a radial tire for your highway application. We have a 12 inch trailer tire that has an 81 mph speed rating with the # TT48012C. This has a tire size of 4.80-12 and would fit and work well for you, except it is not mounted on a wheel. Normally I would recommend a tire and wheel combination but since you need the higher speed you will need to purchase the tire and wheel separately. There are many 12 inch styles and colors of wheels with the 4 on 4 bolt pattern for you...

We do not carry the Eco brand of trailer tires but I can tell you that Loadstar has a more reputable name overall in the trailer tire world than the Eco brand so in terms of quality between just those two that's where I would lean. That said, your best option for a trailer tire in the size of 4.80-12 that you referenced is the Taskmaster tire part # TT48012C as unlike the other tires in this size it is the preferred radial tire style and has the highest speed rating of 81 mph. • Can a Load Range C Tire be Used Instead of a Load Range B Tire on a Trailer
First, make sure that you stay within the gross trailer weight capacity for your trailer. If that 200 pounds extra puts you over the gross trailer weight capacity then you will want to carry that extra weight in the vehicle. Going with a higher capacity tire will not increase the gross trailer weight capacity. With that said since you have a long way to go and such small tires, having a stronger tire in the same size would help to reduce the chance of anything happening to the tires. For...

In order to upgrade to a 12" diameter wheel/tire combo you will need to do a bit of measuring to make sure you have room for the new size. For example, a 4.80-12 tire is 20.7" diameter x 4.9" wide and a 4.80/4.00-8 tire is 16.1" diameter x 4.6" wide. This means that the new tire size will be 2.3" taller and .15" wider which you will need to measure for in order to ensure you have proper clearance. Contrary to automobile tires, trailer tires should be kept inflated to the recommended psi level to receive the minimum wear out of the tires. Another downside to under-inflating the trailer tires is even though you typically carry way below the capacity rating, if you happen...
