Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I was trailering a 650+ pound boat and motor on little 8 inch tires and knew I was on borrowed time before a highway blowout. These upped my load capacity from 575 to 990 pounds. Ordered two sets of rims/tires as replacements plus a spare. They came well-boxed.Manufacturing date was about 10 months ago. Changed them in my driveway with a small floor jack placed under the axle right under the leaf springs in less than an hour, with the boat on the trailer. As others mentioned, the galvanizing is thorough but rough in spots. Be sure to check tire pressure before installing;mine arrived with very little air in them. Quick shipping. A good value. I'm happy. Recommended.

Galvanized wheels in New York are a must. This wheel and tire combination is working well for me.

Michael

Still working great in the Central New York salt belt. Rims look like new. Full trailer loads are about half what these tires are rated for so there is a better margin of safety.

by:

This is my iceboat trailer with new wheels and improved fender brackets. Rust prevention is my main goal on this order. The price was lower than the local store. The delivery was completed in under 48 hours. Amazing! I believe the former white painted wheels were purchased about 10 years ago. They need restoration. The tires might have 2000 miles on them. I recommend galvanized wheels as in this new order. Two wheel and tires for under $100!! Fantastic – and much cheaper than the local tire dealer who offers white painted wheels that rust - by over $20. And free shippng.

By the way, each fender now has two brackets as suggested by eTrailer.

The trailer sat in the woods all summer, since it is a iceboat trailer used in winter. I just pulled it home from the cabin. The wheels look perfect. They have a silver finish, not white paint. Happy!

by:

The product is what I ordered. It came quickly, and the service was fantastic. I just wish shipping costs weren’t so high, but in the scheme of things it was the perfect purchase for me.

Fantastic. Drive my boat 800mi and not a problem. I would buy these again.

by:

These galvanized wheels were perfect for my utility trailer. Great price, delivered fast, installed easily and make the trailer look new.
I'd highly recommend the galvanized type over the white painted style.

by: 09/12/2022

Horrible Quality! Rim had many manufacturer defects and was bent and out of balance since day one. The tire was properly inflated and had a blowout after only a few hundred miles. Quality control is lacking. Spend your money on a quality rim and tire. This isn't one!

by:

My tire needs came up rather quickly and I needed an affordable solution, pronto. I found a variety of tires/wheels and prices that fit my needs. I also found useful advice in choosing the right tires for the job and I highly recommend using it. It's too soon to tell how long the tires will last but, I was very satisfied with the selection, prices, fast delivery and ease of use.

After several trailer loads, my tires and wheels still function like new. I wanted to fix it and forget it. Done! Recommended.

My whole experience from start to finish couldn't have gone any smoother. i called eTrailer with alot of questions. I needed to go from an 8 inch tire to a 12" tire, they were nice, knowledgeable and pateint. i found the tires and the wheels i wanted and had them within two days of ordering. just put them on my boat trailer and they look great!

its been over a year since i got these tires. After many trips and many miles they are still working great. Would and will definitely buy these again.

by:

Very happy with the 2 4.80X12 tires and wheels from etrailer.com. Ordered on a Saturday and delivered to my door on Wednesday. Fast shipping and quality products at a great price! For use on a used boat trailer I picked up to haul my fishing kayak. Will order from this seller again!

by:

Great experience,etrailer is the best!!!

by:

The tire I had originally picked on etrailer for my motorcycle trailer was out of stock but I needed them for a motorcycle trip I was leaving for that same week. An etrailer staff person (James) notified me immediately and helped me find a equal replacement that arrived on time at no extra cost. I am very pleased with the tires he recommended. They performed exceptionally well on my trip.

Great product and even greater service!

Still very happy with my trailer tires! Great product and I have had zero issues with them.

by:

Great tire/wheel combo. Fit perfectly. Came inflated to around 50 PSI, so was ready to use once installed. Delivery was very clean. Both wheels packed in a long, narrow box. Easy to handle. Would buy this again.

by:

Haven't installed the new wheels yet. They'll look good on our galvanized trailer. I would have given 4.5 stars if available. The welding on both Korean made rims is a little rough at places on the inner side. The galvanizing looks good. The Vietnamese made Kendas look great. Shipping was crazy fast. MO to FL in 2 days. Looking forward to installing the wheels and a smooth ride.

by:

Great quality at a fair price! Worked great on our little utility trailer.

by:

Happy with this purchase and the customer support received. When I first ordered I didn't realize there was a galvanized wheel, nor that there was a tire with a higher load capacity in the size I needed. etrailer sent me a shipping label to return the first tire, and I wound up getting two. One year later, no rust on the rims, tires have been performing well on my canoe trailer, and holding their air well. Stored outside, my only concern is that weather will 'retire' them before mileage does which is typical of any trailer tire I think.

by:

I chose to purchase my trailer tires and wheels from e-trailer because I consider them the leader in the field. I shopped hard, and the price was good. When my galvanized 4-lug, 6-ply, 12" wheels arrived they were even better than I hoped.

by:

The tires look good but the wheels have a few rough welds that appear to be where the wheel seams...ugly. The edge of the wheels also are iregular shaped at certain points. I do hope the wheels hold up without cracking at the seams.

by:

They fit good and look good on the trailer. A lot safer than the tire that I took off.

by:

Great service, shipping and tires....pe rfect!

by:

Put these on my boat trailer as the original ones were dry rotted. Wheels look better than the painted ones. Tires are good quality. No more tire worries!

by:

Ordered a pair of Kenda 4.80-12 trailer tires and galvanized rims, Item AM30630. Excellent quality products, well packaged and delivered promptly. Got 'em today, very satisfied, and they make my little firewood trailer look like a million bucks.

by:

Got a set of these for my single place PWC trailer. I converted it to a 2 place stand up trailer and replaced the wheels/tires along with most everything else. These wheels look great and ride nicely.
Tip: Use one of your old wheels/tire as a spare. Order a spare tire holder from etrailer.

by:

Very nice rim and tires, great and fast delivery, only negative issue is rims are galvanized and finish is not appealing, had I know I would of saved money and bought white for $XX less now it will cost me to have them powder coated

Yes, these wheels are dipped in a galvanized solution and allowed to drip dry which can make for a rough finish. This is typical with galvanized wheels from this manufacturer.

by:

Great deal. Good tires!

by:

I don't use the trailer as much but when I do I usually overload it not really knowing the wait of the load mostly fresh wood chips. But the tires, they have been holding up and not splitting in half!

  • Can Trailer Wheel and Tire Size 4.80-8 be Replaced with 5.30-12
Yes you can go to the larger wheel and tire size of 5.30-12 that you asked about. For a 4 lug wheel version we have the part # TA66RR which would work great. This has a higher speed rating of 81 mph.

  • Recommended Smaller Trailer Tires to Replace 5.30-12 Tires
They do make 5.30-8 tires but we unfortunately do not carry them. If you're looking for a smaller tire to lower your trailer, then I'd suggest going with the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30630 for a 4 on 4 or # AM30670 for a 5 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern. These tires are 4.80-12 which is going to be 1.4" smaller in diameter than your current 5.30-12 tires, so that should bring your trailer down a bit.

The Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30630 is rated for 65 miles per hour. If you routinely go above 65 miles per hour it will start to generate excessive heat. If it's one thing tires hate it's heat! All of the trailer tires in size 4.80-12 are rated for 65 miles per hour.

  • Replacement Trailer Spare for Tire Size 4.80-12
The tire diameters are very different between the two sizes. The bigger size you have now of 4.80-12 is overall 20.5 inches tall and the older size 4.80-8 is 16.1 inches. Since that difference is split between either side of the spindle you'd have one side of the trailer sitting 2.2 inches taller than the other. In a very short-term emergency situation you could probably limp home with that but I would highly recommend matching the larger tire size for a spare with something like the part...

  • Does Pilot Diameter of Replacement Wheel Need to Match That of Old Wheel
The answer to your question will depend on if you have hub centric or lug centric wheels. What's the difference? Lug centric wheels use wheel studs embedded in the hub and lug nuts to attach the wheels. The wheel studs provide all the support for the wheel. In this case, the wheel's pilot diameter isn't important as long as it's large enough for the hub grease cover to pass through it with some room to spare. Hub centric wheels are a different story. Hub centric wheels are held on by...

  • Do I Need to Give My Kenda 4.80-12 Trailer Tires # AM30630 Time to Cool Down When Driving
The 90psi is going to be the cold filling pressure; as you drive, the tires are going to heat up and the air inside them is going to expand. When running long distances, most tire manufacturers recommend that you stop for 30 minutes for every 3 hours of driving in order to let the tires cool down. After each stop, it would be a good idea to check your tire pressure and make sure that they're not going below the 90psi if you are having tire pressure concerns.
