Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I purchased this Kenda tire and wheel combo as a spare for my Aspen pop-up camper. It now gives me peace of mind as I’ve traveled many miles without one. It matches the existing wheels and tires on the trailer perfectly. etrailer had the best price for this item. I waited a little while for delivery but it was worth the wait. Thanks again etrailer for coming through with the parts I need!

Nice tires and rims!! They came in a timely manner. They were bolt on ready. (minus the dang little warning stickers that leave goop wherever they were stuck) When ordering, I paid attention to the Load Rating. Never even thought that they would be SPEED rated?!?! So, I purchased tires that are rated at 65 MPH! But they have the correct Load Rating!! So, just a heads up, don’t make my mistake. check the Load AND Speed ratings BEFORE you buy!!! etrailers updates and follow up are excellent. Since the Speed Rating was my mistake, I did not check in with Customer Service. But my guess would be, based upon current experience, Customer Service is problem just as good as the rest of the services!

good looking rims and decent tires. had to get them balanced and had to get different lug nuts because the holes for the nuts to sit in are smaller than the open end nuts most trailers come with. look great though and run good.

I have purchased wheels and tires for two kayak trailers from these folks and I can tell you this...quality is great, price is fair, but the customer service will blow you away. THIS is the type of company I want to deal with, and I will gladly pay a premium to do so. Fortunately with etraielr you don't have to pay a premium, you get the outstanding customer service AND great prices. I would HIGHLY recommend this company.

After a year I am even more impressed! Tires and rims are holding up very well and still look like new!

They are aluminum wheels and seem to be well-made. Here is a hint, though. The holes are too small for the two automotive lug wrenches I tried. I tried a 13/16" Spark Plug socket but it was too weak and deformed (if you try that and don't deform it you may not be putting enough torque on it). I bought a 13/16", 6-Point, 3/8" Drive Socket from Sears which works fine.

Well, product shipped fast, overall 200% Improvement on my Trailer. Good decision, and now I even have a Spare. Company communicates well with tracking and updates.

Looks good and makes the trailer look so much better.

Nice looking wheel. Tire performs well.

My experience was great and shipping was fast

AWESOME upgrade to the stock ugly white wheels that came on my trailer. Already getting positive comments and people asking "where did you get those cool trailer wheels?"! THANKS etrailer!

Had some confusion about the order I placed over the phone, but Noah got the additional wheel I needed rushed to me and made it right. Great job!!

I had tires balanced, one took 1/2 oz on inside the other was "00" no balance needed. The ride wad much smoother then bias ply tires, etrailer thank you for advice.

I buy a lot of items on-line and this was by far the best packed item I've ever received. Now I can enjoy the item as if it were bought directly from a retail store.

Good fit and finish and a good value.

These look really high quality, a huge improvement over the stock tires. The price was right, very happy with purchase.

Didn't give the full 5 stars strictly because... China. Rim machining is excellent though. Tires are good quality. Bought these as replacements on my 10 ft Karavan PWC trailer. Upgraded from tiny 4.80 X 12 bias plies to these larger radials. Way better confidence traveling down the interstate now.
P.S. the sticker goo comes right off with acetone, no damage at all to rim finish!

Fast shipping and great service!

I have used this company 3 times now for replacement tires and wheels for my 30ft boat. Each time they tell me shipping could be 4 to 5 days, BUT, each order has been delivered in 2 or 3 days.

Highly recommend them.

I have had a great experience with these tires and rims. I put them on my utility trailer and they not only look great, but they handle the loads I carry. I haul a large lawn tractor, crush and run gravel, tree limbs and other such materials as need and the tires just keep doing their job. I recommend these tire/rim combo for OEM replacements, you won't be disappointed.

The tires have not been an issue. They look good and I font have to worry about them. I recommend them to anyone.

I am completely Satisfied not only with the excellent products "etrailer" provides as well as the speed of service and delivery. I am also extrmely satisfied with how the entire team of sales/ shipping staff keep me informed through emails about the process of my orders; Great Job "etrailer Team "...... I ordered my wheels and lug nuts late Friday "NIGHT" and had them on my door step by mid afternoon on Tuesday!!!!! ( They actually were delivered a day early. UPS had them scheduled for wednesday and delivered them the day before ) AWSOME !!!!!!!! etrailer, Flat Out AWSOME, I'm going to place another order soon. Thanks, Terry O.

I had a flat on my boat trailer returning home from a Minnesota walleye fishing trip. A few of the guys I was fishing with told me about E Trailer and how great they were so I called them to order this new tire & rim combo. The product shipped the day I ordered it and arrived the next morning via UPS. I was able to mount the new tire & rim, seems to fit well only problem is that I don't have correct lug bolts which I ordered and those shipped same day and are delivering next day. Overall I would highly recommend this company, the people are really friendly, helpful if you aren't 100% sure of exactly what you need. Heidi, Judy and Kevin all helped me with my orders and they were really great folks. I'm ordering rest of my boat trailer tires from this company from now on.

Wheels look good on my trailer and the tires are holding up very well. Very happy with my purchase definitely will order again when the time comes for tires. Thanks

As always etrailer delivers an awesome product at a great price!

Got this wheel as a replacement spare for our pop-up camper.

Really nice looking wheel. Considering not covering it up to show it off.

I just received all of my items and everything appears to be excellent quality. I am very pleased with the service so far and they have always answered my questions ahead of time in a prompt manner.

no issues.

  • Are Radial Tires Better than Bias-Ply Tires for a Boat Trailer
Due to it's construction, a radial tire has more flex and will allow for more ground contact which improves tractions and tread wear. It also gives the radial tire better stability and will normally run cooler which will help the tire last longer, especially when the tire is under a load. When it comes to radial tires and wheels for your boat trailer, I recommend Kenda KR25 ST145R12 Radial Trailer Tire with 12" Aluminum Wheel, # AM31206. This tire has a section width of 5.7 inches and...

The Load Range E of the tire size 205/65-10 that you referenced has a 1,650 lb capacity when inflated to 90 psi. The only way we can safely recommend you run this tire is at it's max capacity. Otherwise the capacity would be diminished (to an unknown amount), and the tire would heat up and potentially fail. • Can Tire Pressure Be Lowered On Small Utility Trailer
It is always recommended to inflate the tires on a trailer to the maximum pressure. If you do not inflate the tire to its maximum, it reduces the amount of weight a tire can carry and if overloaded can cause the sidewalls of the tire to overheat and fail. If you over inflate the tires it will cause tread wear at the center of the tread and if under inflated it will wear the outside edges of the tire. It's always recommended to inflate the tires when they are cold. I have attached a...

Your current 20.5x8x10 size tire is equivalent to the current tire size of 205/65-10 which has an overall diameter of 20.5" and a rim width of 6". Since your wheel has a 5 bolt pattern it should be the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern which is the most common. The Kenda KR25 ST145R12 Radial Trailer Tire with 12" Aluminum Wheel # AM31206 will definitely meet your lower pressure and wider needs, but it will also be a little taller. With that said, you will want to make sure you have enough clearance to go with a larger tire. You will want to make sure you have at least 3" from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender/wheel well and around 1.5" of space between the sidewall of the tire and side of the fender/wheel well. There are differences between the 5.30-12 tires and 205/65-10 tires. The 205s only fit a 6 inch wide wheel so you would have to replace the wheels as well if you make the switch.
