Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias with Galvanized 5 hole wheels. It has been hard to find a set of 13" tires to take this load weight, but you had them!

Used on a custom built tilt bed trailer that hauls a 1976 "Morrison Trailblazer", one of only 300 built to make trails in the woods as narrow as 24" wide, or up to 6 feet wide. Morrison Trailblazers were the first mechanized trail building machines made, each built one at a time by Jerry Morrison, each one an improvement over the last one built, this one is # 276, his name is "DINO" and this trailer takes him deep into the woods.

No issues with this set of tires and rims

by:

My two tire and wheel combos arrived today. The tires seem to be decent (time will tell), but the wheels are atrocious. The slag left by the galvanization process has poured into a 1/4 inch thick blob on the edge of the rim and is flaking off. If you are looking for a decent wheel these are not it and you should look elsewhere.

Yeah, unfortunately this is a common issue with the galvanized rims. The manufacturer dips the rims then hangs them up to air dry, then they are shipped out. I can send you over to our customer service department to see if we can get some other ones sent out to you.

by:

They seem like excellent tires. Good rims. Fast delivery.

These are the best trailer tires I have owned. Wear well....track well.

This tire and wheel are a spare for my 6 x 12 utility trailer. I mounted it with a mount also purchased from etrailer and secured it with a wheel lock I also purchased from this website. I have made many purchases from etrailer for my boat, utility, and Airstream trailers and have always been very satisfied with every aspect of all my purchases. This business is a KEEPER! Purchase with confidence.

by:

Great service. One call is all it took. In the last two weeks my fishing partner just bought 4 wheels and tires got the same great service. Keep up the good work.

by:

Nice replacement for rusted OEM Wheels. Super fast delivery. Bought 2 and decided to buy another for spare.

by:

I put this set of tires on my boat a year ago and I use my boat every weekend and some week days and after all the time on the trailer still look like they are new definitely will be buying another set soon

by:

The offset tire mount is very well designed…. Tire and rim are nice…. Fit great on my whaler

by:

I would like to comment that the wheels purchased look great. Arrived in 4 days from my order. The quality is excellent along with the price. I have attached a picture where I replaced the standard rims, wheels, and hub caps on my Tracker Boat trailer with the new wheels from etrailer. The center piece from my old hub cap set matched perfect with my new galvanized wheels.

by:

Awesome wheel and tire. Price and delivery were also excellent. When I need anymore I know where I'll be buying my next set.

by:

Ordering was a breeze. Shipped and received in a flash. Etrailer has a new long term customer with me! Great tire/rim combo. They spiced up my little boat pretty good.

by:

These are load range D tires that I needed for my Tritoon. The rims have a good finish that should not rust for a while. etrailer customer service is the best. I called on Thursday to inquire about my order and was told they didn't know when the shipment would arrive. Since I needed the tires quickly, etrailer substituted another tire in stock and I got them the next day with free shipping. Triple AAA plus for customer service.

by:

Tires look great but the wheel are almost chrome looking and on the inside of them there appears to be casting defects in the same area on all the ones I purchased. Big raised rough spot on them.

While the galvanized finish on the wheels can be rough, I am not sure what happened with the ones you received. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you so we can look into it.

Perfect replacement wheels/tires for my 1990 Magic Loader boat trailer. Quick free shipping was a plus. My previous tires were installed in 2008 and just started leaking air. These are supposed to be high quality tires from Tawain (Kenda). We'll see how well they last on my tandem axle trailer with a 4800 lb Wellcraft boat

by:

Excellent product. Tire holder is first class and galvanized. Tire and wheel are also first class. Only suggestion I have is that all the hardware should also be galvanized because many of us use this in a saltwater environment.

by:

Easy Swap. Bent the rim on our boat trailer and needed to replace it. Matches all the other wheels and tires and had it changed in about 10 minutes. great product.

by:

The spare tire mount was easy to install, came with clear instructions and I got it all installed in about 5 minutes. Wheel is galvanized to help prevent corrosion and should hold up very well on my boat trailer. Order arrived very quickly too: Etrailer rocks! Thanks guys!

by:

My new wheels and tires showed up with no flaws and ready to go.
There are two sets in the photo, just stacked.

by:

very fast delivery, great looking ,will make the boat trailer look very sharp

by:

The tire looked fine but like other reviews stated- the rim looks like crap!!!!

by:

New tires and wheels from etrailer! Installation pictures.

by:

Exactly what I ordered! Super fast shipping and great service too! I’d definitely order from them again!

by:

Perfect service and products every time!

by:

Tire and lock set were in the same box without any filling and the lock set got destroyed. Notified etrailer and they sent a new lock set which was very nice of them. A little filler in the box would have prevented their loss. I have bought from them a few times over the years without issues and will continue to buy in the future. Thank you etrailer!

by:

Easy no hassle and I would definitely tell others to go there for your products

  • Tire Replacement Recommendation for 155R13 C90/88Q on Boat Trailer
Thanks for reaching out! Your 155R13 C90/88Q tire size means the overall diameter is 22.8", the width is 6.1", and it fits on a 13" wheel. While we have some options that are similar, none are exactly the same so you'll want to switch them all over to a matching size asap so you don't have mismatched tires and something else fails. For your application I recommend picking up the Kenda Loadstar ST175/80D13 tire on a Galvanized wheel. We have part # AM3S130 which is a load range C with...

When we have to enlarge holes here for the install of trailer hitches we usually use a rotabroach tool but the best tool to use is a reamer. Since you're making a relatively small size increase I would find a 2 inch reamer tool for a power drill and go with that.

  • How To Measure The Bolt Pattern On Trailer Wheel While On The Trailer
You sure can measure to find the correct bolt pattern on your wheels if you can see the lugs. On a 5-bolt pattern, the easiest way is to measure from the center of one bolt hole center to the center of the bolt hole next to it. If that measurement is 2-5/8 inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2. If 2-3/4inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4. If 3 inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 5, and if it measures 3-1/4 inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2. I have attached a helpful article...

  • Should I Get Higher Load Range Tires Than Needed
The higher load range tires, part # AM31242 that you looked at, really won't help or hurt you. They don't protect any better against nails or anything else that can damage them compared to lower rated tires like part # AM3S060 and you certainly don't need the extra capacity. On the other hand the flexing of a tire doesn't have much bearing on the quality of your ride. Sure it'll have some but your suspension should take up most of that. If it were me I'd likely go with the D rated tires...

All other things being equal, it is always preferable to have matching tires on your trailer. Different tire brands may have different tread depths and may wear at different rates due to variances in the formula used in their rubber compound. However, you can use the two different tires if you wish.
