Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Have only put a few hundred miles on them so far, but they seem like quality tires and rims. Order fulfillment and shipping was super quick -- faster than what was estimated when I ordered. I appreciated the quick delivery so I could put them on before a trip.

Its been a year, and theyre in great condition. Was surprised this spring that after sitting in storage all winter, the tire pressure was still right on. Must have a darn good seal.

Arrived sooner than I expected!!! George kept me updated constantly so glad I stuck with the origional order and did not change it. Cannot ask for better customer service or faster shipping! Order arrived perfect! Mounted, inflated and ready to install. Well packaged also. Will be ordering again soon for another trailer I have. deserves more than 5 stars!!!

Good tire and rim.

The items have held the test of time, very durable and I will purchase these again when needed.

Awesome product, awesome company and super fast shipping. Love the map with updated shipping location super nice touch to the buying experience. Will be buying from you guys again in the future!

Bought 3 of these to replace 34 year old tires on my small travel trailer that I bought (always have an identical spare). Towed my trailer from Boston to Yellowstone and back on these. Very good ride and quality. Highly recommended

Seems to be heavy enough duty for my Shorelander trailer spare and matches the current tires and rims perfectly. Fast shipping and lowest price for Karrier ST175/80R13 class C

Excellent tire at a reasonable price. Also, prompt service from!!

My first trip fishing with the new Karrier tires from eTrailer was yesterday 01-21-2012. Out of the box and installed on my trailer. The ride was very smooth! I really appreciate everyone that assisted me with my minor problems from the start. My Thanks to this great team including but not limited to: Katherine H., Lori B., Janice A., Rebecca N., Christy, John, & others.
Showing a couple shots of the tires on the trailer, limit of Crappie (30) & three of the biggest Crappie.

I needed new tires and rims for my RV You had them in stock ,and it was fast service. Received my items in fast time. Thanks etrailer

Worked great .put them on my RV trailer made two trips from Florida to Texas and back. Still look great. Thanks etrailer

Excellent! Quality! Thank you.

These are the 2nd set of Kenda tires I have purchased. The first set lasted for 7 years and I was very pleased with them. I would recommend them to anyone who needs a new set of trailer tires

Exactly what I ordered and a great price. Saved several dollars.

Solid parts. Well put-together by the etrailer team. Super customer service when I placed the order but gave the wrong email by mistake.

Great fast service. Every company should do business this way. Good job, Thanks, Ricky S.

Product was exactly as described, shipping was swift and free. Pricing is very competitive and actually better in some cases when compared to other sites. I would not hesitate to purchase from etrailer again.
The construction of the wheels and tires seems very solid. However, I am not able to offer a complete review of the product at this time, as the wheels were recently installed and have yet to be real world tested.

Tires are working out fine. Smooth and quiet.

Excellent tire, highly recommend. The tips on how to measure the bolt pattern were accurate and easy to follow. Thank you E Trailer.

The Kendra Tires have been great. Your website was easy to use and quickly helped me determine the correct size for the trailer I have.

Your product is as expected the service from you Cathy T. was great. Delivery was not as I had hoped for. We waited for the UPS delivery on Thursday before the 4th of July weekend until 4:PM, (normal delivery time is before that at our location), and left with out a spare tire for the boat trailer for the 4th of July weekend in northern Mn. The tire did show up on Friday morning . I was confident with the tires I have on my trailer and we made the trip both ways with out a problem. I expect UPS had an unusually high work load before the holiday weekend. I do have a spare tire on my boat trailer now and we are happy and do not with to complain about the UPS service. tks. for all you did... Allyn

This tire is the fourth item I have ordered from e trailer all have arrived promptly even with least expensive (or free) shipping option.
They have had every item I needed at the best possible price and I highly recommend them!

Still like them great. No visible signs of wear would order again.
Pete S - 01/23/2016

Bought as a spare for a boat trailer. I have had a set of these on my trailer for 3 years and have been very impressed with the quality and service of the tire wheel combo. Very satisfied with the product and look forward to years of service from this spare. Etrailer customer service has been wonderful with great selection, fast delivery and great communication throughout the process. I really enjoy the website for selecting what I need. Obviously they have a very knowledgeable staff and provide extensive info to help. Very positive experience.

Bought a second spare tire/wheel combo for an upcoming cross country road trip. The product arrived within just a few days in excellent condition. The sturdy packaging i am sure helped. I have not used the new tire yet but expect it to be just fine. I gave it a careful inspection and it looks perfect. Also this is the same tire my local tire shop sells but they could not come close to Etrailer prices.

Can't comment on products yet, had them shipped to my vacation home and haven't seen them yet. But I can comment on shipping service. This is the second time I've had stuff shipped this way and it has been lightening fast and the tracking feature is superb. The hitch and accessories I ordered last time delivered in great shape and at an excellent price. I recommend etrailers to all my friends.

Always a bit nervous ordering from places I've never dealt with. Process was easy and free shipping. I assumed I see the product in a week but it arrived within 2 days. I'm 5 days from order and tires already on the trailer. Great service.

Tires and rims were great ! Am definitely impressed with quick delivery time...Ms to Oh. Had just removed my old wheels when the UPS truck just pulled up with new ones ! (And I didn't even pay any extra for this..LOL.
Would recommend these tires and using to a friend.

Very good service, excellent tires and wheels for my shorelander boat trailer.

  • Will a 175/80-13 Trailer Tire Fit In Place of a 175/65-13 Tire
A tire size 175/65-13 is not a typical trailer tire size, it is a car tire size. The closest match is a 175/80-13 like # AM31951 that you have referenced. The 2 different sizes will be the same width but the 175/80-13 will be a little over 2 inches taller. You will need to make sure there is at least 1 inch of clearance above the existing tire for the new tire to fit. I have included a couple of links on trailer tires for you to view.

  • Do Kenda Karrier ST 175/80R13 Trailer Wheels/Tires, Part # AM31951, Come Pre-Balanced
The Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Wheel/Tire, part # AM31951, is not fully dynamically balanced when the tire is mounted. Full dynamic balancing of trailer tires is less critical than for passenger vehicle tires, where a severe out-of-balance condition could be noticeable. However, Kenda does match the low spot of the tire with the high spot of the wheel when mounting them to achieve a partial balance.

  • Can Car Tires be Used on a Trailer
I strongly advise against putting passenger vehicle tires on a trailer. This is because trailer tires and passenger vehicle tires are constructed differently. Trailer tires (they will have ST in front of the size which stands for special trailer) are built with a thicker sidewall to handle more vertical load. Passenger vehicle tires are not built this way since they are designed to handle more lateral forces from turning. A passenger vehicle tire could work as a temporary fix only if you...

  • Boat Trailer Tire Replacements for 6.5-13 Tires
The closest match to your 6.5-13 tires is going to be a 175/80-13. This size has a section width of 7 inches and overall diameter of 24.1 inches. They will fit on 13 x 4-1/2 inch, 13 x 5 inch and 13 x 5-1/2 inch wheels. Wheel width is measured from bead seat to bead seat where the tire sits; not overall width. If this all matches what you have now (or is close) then you can go to a 175/80-13. I have included a link to all of the tires and tire and wheel combos we have in this size. A...

  • Is a 175/70-13 Tire Size a Trailer Tire or Will a 175/80-13 Fit in Its Place
Usually, a 175/70-13 is a passenger car tire. What you can do to verify is look at the tire again and if there is a number after the size, like 82Q, it is not a trailer tire. Trailer tires do not have this additional number, which is a load index and speed rating. The closest fit would be a 175/80-13. Based on the picture you attached of your motorcycle it does look like you will be able to jump in size to a 12 inch, possibly 13 inch tire and wheel combo.
