Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

very happy with this tire & wheel having them come mounted and ready for installation also the galvanized rims give the appearance of chrome wheels also a plus

I couldn’t be happier with the wheels/tires I purchased. The galvanized finish is nice and shiny. They almost look polished. The tires felt great. Nice and smooth while towing up to 80mph. Had no issues at all on my trip. Huge thank you to Brent J who helped me purchase them, and provided excellent customer service.

I ordered these to place on my boat trailer. I used them on my 2012 Trailstar trailer which carries my Tracker bass boat. It had load range C tires. I wanted to upgrade my tires and this item was exactly what I wanted. These fit perfectly. The tires were “fresh”....meaning that they were made only a months ago. The finish on the rims was much better than I was expecting. The welds on the back side of the rims looks to me to be quality work.

It’s been a year and I have absolutely no complaints. I would definitely purchase these again.

I'm happy with the Radial Tire and Galvanized Wheel package etrailer helped me with. Between the pictures and video of the product on the website, multiple questions submitted and answers received (even though I interfaced with multiple agents on the phone and email, they're all up to speed on customer information), packaging, product quality, price, ease of purchase, and follow up after receiving the delivery(which was prompt), It's been an excellent experience! I will use etrailer again for future purchases and recommend as first choice!

After inadvertently ordering the wrong tire for my trailer I called the support number and was fortunately helped by Roger. He arranged for the return of the incorrect tire and placed the order for the correct one. Also gave me some good tips on proper tire inflation and load ratings. Thanks again for all your help!!!

Tires & Rims came fast. I purchased these because of the high load rating and the fact that they already came mounted on galvanized rims, ready to go. 1 year later and so far so good. I had a close call with a set of cheaper bias ply tires. It's just not worth your (or your family's) safety or the chance that a blown tire will ruin your entire weekend. Don't cheap out on tires. Get a good set like this and go out and have fun with the piece of mind that you will make it there and back safely.

I needed to replace the worn out tires on my flatbed utility trailer and had been concerned about the weight capacity of the load range C bias-ply tires that were installed by the local tire shop just after I bought the trailer - combined 2700 lbs on 3500 lbs axles, 5400 lbs total. A couple of times, I've had 4000 lbs of landscaping bricks from the home improvement store plus the 1300 lbs trailer weight rolling down the highway. With these load range D tires, the combined tire weight rating is now 6400 lbs. I'll gladly pay the extra few dollars per tire for the LR D's over the LR C's for that piece of mind plus these galvanized wheels look a lot better than the old white rusty wheels do.

Great service , the wheels and tires look great on my Tracker 175

Put these tires on my tracker 175. I have pulled the boat several miles and they still look new
Bob - 05/19/2022

Tires were ordered on Good Friday and showed before noon on Tuesday. Great service as expected.

The tires are very nice and there was no shipping damage. I think they will work great on my camper for this years long distance tow.

Only little complaint is that the rims don't look like a lot of finish work went into them. They are rough, almost look like they were spray painted rather than galvanized. Surface has drips and runs. But otherwise is well covered and I don't anticipate them rusting like my old white painted rims did.

They may look better with a bit of hand polish work. But they are trailer tires not mag rims on a GTO so I can live with it.

First time purchasing from and I was very pleased with the prompt shipping and quality of the products I purchased. Purchased a set of new pre-mounted tires and wheels for my boat trailer and spare tire carriers for my boat and jet ski trailers.

great tires and rims

Wheel & Tire package were exactly what I needed. After having not one but two blow outs on the boat trailer while going to the lake I needed replacement fast. E-trailer had what I wanted and their customer service is second to none. I really don't go anywhere else when it comes to getting things for my trailer.

Just got them, so don't know anything about tire quality. They look good though and I trust Kenda"s quality. The wheels galvanization is somewhat rough, but thorough. Your customer service is as good as any. and , That is the type of company I support.

Was very surprised and happy that a galvanized wheel didn't need much balancing weight. I'm very satisfied with the tire and wheel.

I needed a spare tire to tow a friends boat to his new lake home in NC from VA and needed it quick. I found what I needed on etrailer, tire/rim and spare tire mount. I received them quickly, 2.5 days with regular free shipping and everything arrived neatly packaged and in good shape. Quick, easy and quality products and service. I will order more from this company!

etrailer employees are really good! The only negative aspect was the shipping using UPS but could be related to local UPS service center!

Here goes. I needed a boat trailer spare. I wanted a galvanized wheel. Some use on puget sound. And a radial, so it would last. If you've ever owned bias ply trailer tires. They burn up real quick. I checked with E Trailer first and they not only had it in stock. They offered to send it for free. I checked with the local tire dealer *es Sch*about and they would have to special order it. $$$$$. I said thanks anyway. I gave you guy's a chance. And I'm going with e trailer. I've done business with e trailer before. And they never disappoint. My spare showed up today on UPS.Much sooner than expected. NICE!

Wheels and tires look to be of good quality were shipped quickly and packaged very well for shipment, received prompt with no damage. Since I have not used yet I will update later if this site allows

Fast shipping and great quality looks perfect on our Shasta!

I purchased these to replace the wheels and tires on my bass tracker boat trailer. Ive ran them a year and theyre great. Im pleased with my purchase

I ordered the galvanized wheel and kenda tire. All seems pretty good except the galvanized wheel has some really rough areas on it.

Tires and Wheels arrived in 2-secure packages.
installation. They look and ride great!!
Would highly recommend... Thank you.

These people at etrailer have got it together I wouldn't hesitate to refer this company for anybody that needs tires or rims they were on time or they were before on time and the people are great there I would definitely not hesitate to do business there again

Extremely poor quality coating on wheels. Bubbling clearly visible. I would’ve returned them but it seemed like a huge hassle.

Working fine after a year. Coating has not flaked off yet.

I am well satisfied with these tires and the service was excellent. They were in on the exact date that I was told. Thank you very much Dawn

Very pleased with the service of tires. Thanks

  • Recommendation to Replace 155R13 Tires on Boat Trailer
The 155Rx13 tire is an older size that's not used much at all anymore, which is why you're having so much trouble finding an exact replacement. Because of this your best option is to replace the tires with the closest current/modern trailer tire size available, which is a 175/80R13 model. A 175/80R13 trailer tire has an overall diameter/height of 24 inches and a width of 6.9 inches. This is about 1.2" taller and 0.8" wider than what you currently have. As long as you aren't already cutting...

It sounds like you may have measured incorrectly, though you were on the right track. There are actually a couple of ways for you to find your bolt pattern. The other method would be to use the distance between the center of one bolt hole to the center of the bolt hole adjacent to it. If the distance is: 2-5/8" - the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2 2-3/4" - the...

  • Do Trailer Tires Come Already Balanced
The pre-mounted trailer wheel/trailer tire products we sell, such as # AM31994, are not dynamically balanced the way vehicle wheels/tires are. Trailer tires do not really need to be fully balanced the way vehicle tires do but you could have them balanced if you wanted. These items are mounted together so that the wheel's heavy spot mates up to the tire's light spot; this is not the same as a full dynamic balance but it is fine for trailer use. The two linked articles on trailer tires will...

Since this tire is 175/80-13 bias tire, tires of this size have weight ratings up to 1,100 to 1,610-lb maximum load at 65 psi. This information is based on current tires we sell that are the same size like # AM31994. So the rating that I listed is not promised to be accurate, but this information can be used as a guide. • Is it Necessary to Fully Balance Trailer Tires
First, thank you for your many purchases from us here at etrailer, including the Kenda Karrier tires # AM31994. Trailer tires that we sell come from the distributor already mounted to the rims. These do NOT get a full dynamic balance the way new vehicles tires do but they don't actually need this. When the tires are mounted to the rims the light spot on the tire is matched to the heavy spot on the wheel. This provides a degree of balancing that is sufficient for trailer tires. You can...
