Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I’ve had great experiences in the past but this time wasn’t the case. I ordered these tires for my raft trailer. I ordered these on Sunday evening because they would arrive on Wednesday as I was leaving on a week long vacation on Friday. Well the tires didn’t show till Friday and then they weren’t the right size!! Very disappointed. I called customer service to explain my concern and was not impressed. Customer service is not what it once was. Yes I was offered to make the order correct but after this huge inconvenience and having to buy an additional set of tires from a local shop I’m stuck with two sets of tires and a feeling like I am just another victim of a crappy online shopping experience.

by:

This was a great wheel and tire deal. I needed to replace two boat trailer tires, along with the spare. I got new wheels along with new tires for the same amount I would have paid for just tires locally. Have been using the boat and trailer all summer with no issues. Also delivery time was fast. I have ordered from etrailer before and it is always a good experience !

by:

I couldn’t be happier with the wheels/tires I purchased. The galvanized finish is nice and shiny. They almost look polished. The tires felt great. Nice and smooth while towing up to 80mph. Had no issues at all on my trip. Huge thank you to Brent J who helped me purchase them, and provided excellent customer service.

We ended up selling this pop-up after about a year and upgraded to a 17’ hybrid camper. I purchased the same wheels and possibly the same tires in a 16” and they have been great as well. The welds weren’t as clean on the wheels this time, but they have functioned perfectly at a great price. I would definitely purchase again.

by:

I ordered these to place on my boat trailer. I used them on my 2012 Trailstar trailer which carries my Tracker bass boat. It had load range C tires. I wanted to upgrade my tires and this item was exactly what I wanted. These fit perfectly. The tires were “fresh”....meaning that they were made only a months ago. The finish on the rims was much better than I was expecting. The welds on the back side of the rims looks to me to be quality work.

It’s been a year and I have absolutely no complaints. I would definitely purchase these again.

by:

Thank You E trailer, I ordered new tires and wheels for my boat trailer. I ordered on Monday and Wednesday afternoon they were on my trailer along with the new bearings and lug nuts. You know what they say about boat tires, You'll never wear em out they just dry rot to death. My old tires were date stamped from year 2006 so i got my moneys worth out of them. The new tires from etrailer were less than 1 year old so I'm happy

by:

Just got my trailer tires mounted on galvanizing wheels. Incredible fast shipment and great packaging so that they arrived showroom perfect. The best part is that the eTrailer price was the best.

It has been a year and the wheels are still beautiful. The tires are wearing great and tow easy, even up to 80 mph I have the ticket to prove it.

by:

Nice looking rims and tires, trailer needed a freshen up and these did it.

by:

Excellent communication, shipped immediately, and look great. I'm upgrading a small boat trailer from 12" to 13" and these fit the bill perfectly.

by:

Look great. Higher load rating than my previous tires. We shall see

Excellent product. Good tire wear and very happy with load capacity

by:

These are really good tires and wheels. They really made my fishing rig look nice.

by:

I purchased the tire and rim for a spare outfit for my boat trailer. I have not had to use it yet which is a good thing but it is the right size and it gives me the peace of mine that in case I need it I have the right one.

by:

Great tires and wheels.

by:

Informative website made it easy to determine / find what the wheels for my trailer build and order was delivered in a timely manner. Product is of very good quality.

by:

The items were delivered early and appear to be high quality!

The tires and wheels are performing as they should. I would buy again.

by:

First off, the tires are 2 years old! Second the wheel tire package are not balanced. You need to do better for the price.

Typically when we receive the tires in from the manufacturer they will be 18 to 24 months old. They are stored in controlled temperature warehouses and do not suffer from dry rot. They will still have a 5 year warranty on the tire against defect. It is true that trailer tires with rims do not come balanced. Since the tires are on a trailer it is less likely to feel the vibrations from unbalanced tires versus when you are in a passenger style vehicle. You can choose to have them balanced if you prefer. Remember that many trailer wheels are centered by the position of the lug bolts [these wheels are lug-centric] and not the center bore of the wheel. For best results, have them balanced using a pin plate adapter. This mimics the way a lug-centric wheel is mounted to a hub. If you have any other questions or concerns please let me know.

by:

As with all eTrailer products it arrived promptly and was well packaged. I bought this as a spare so I have not tried it yet but it looks nicer than the originals!

by:

The tires I purchased work out great for my snowmobile trailer. They function and look great.

by:

Product arrived on time and without damage. Performance and durability cannot be determined this early in the process. Customer support from etrailer has been excellent.

by:

Nice tires, rims were a perfect fit, fast easy shipping.

by:

Tires look great, would have given 5 stars but the finish on the wheels are uneven kind of a stained look. One wheel is shinier than the other. Inner part of one wheel had a few chips in finish

by:

Pleasure doing business with etrailer process was quick and easy speedy delivery

by:

Packed well, prompt delivery. Product looks to be quality. Smooth, easy transaction. I’ll be back for my other trailer needs.

by:

Very satisfied with my new tires and ri ms.

by:

This is a spare for the kayak trailer built earlier this year. Same tires were purchased previously, and they work well! It's easy to find what I need on this site, quick delivery and lots of follow up by customer service after the purchase to ensure I'm satisfied.

by:

Service was great and the price was right. The shipping was on time and I really like the way the tires ride.

  • Can I Swap The 12" Wheels On The CE Smith Multi Sport Trailer CE48870 To 13" Wheels?
Though it is possible to upgrade the wheels on the CE Smith Multi Sport Plus Boat and Kayak Trailer # CE48870 to a 13" option, like the Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel # AM31994, it will have to be a separate purchase and cannot be swapped out by us. This is kitted together from CE Smith and isn't something we can change parts on, unfortunately. I do also have to mention that going with a larger tire/wheel will require a few things to be done. The Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel # AM31994 will work if the 1,610 lbs at 65 psi weight rating (per tire) is enough for your boat and trailer. This gives you a total weight capacity of 6,440 lbs. If you need a bit more then we actually do have 185/80-13 size tires so something like the Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel # AM3S334 would give you a slightly higher weight capacity at 1,710 lbs at 65 psi (for a total of 6,840...

This is a load range C tire with a maximum capacity of 1,360 lbs at 50 psi. Having said that, it isn't necessary to balance trailer tires as they track behind a vehicle instead of controlling its movement, but if you wanted to balance them you certainly could. • Should Tires Be Inflated To Pressure Listed On Trailer Or Side Of Tire
You should always follow what is printed on the side of the tire from the trailer tire manufacturer. Tires inevitably get replaced over time so what was printed on the trailer will no longer be accurate. For trailer tires, this will typically be the max psi. For example, the # AM31994 you were looking at has a max psi of 65 which is what the tires need to be at for the max load of 1,610 lbs.

The wheel/tire products we sell, such as the Kenda # AM31994, have not been given a full dynamic machine balancing but what is done is that the tire's light spot and the wheel's heavy spot are aligned by the distributor. This is not the same as a full machine balancing that is essential for vehicle tires, but it is usually fine for trailer tires so they don't require any further balancing. Passenger vehicle tires must be dynamically balanced for proper operation. If you know a local...

  • What is the Weight of the Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 LR-D with a Galvanized Steel Wheel
Most wheels and tire combos of this size will weigh roughly the same, but it mostly depends on the wheel. The # AM31994 you were looking at has a galvanized steel wheel and weighs roughly 31-lbs. This is a Load Range D tire. Similarly, the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM31952 weighs 30-lbs, so there's only about a 1-lb difference.

With your loaded trailer weighing around 1,400 to 1,600 pounds, I would actually run the Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM31994 at the 65 psi rating. This is due to the max capacity of the tire being 1,610 pounds. This also has an M speed rating, meaning it is rated up to 81 miles per hour. With all this being said, I highly recommend going with the # AM31994.

We currently carry 1 tire by itself that is a radial 175/80-13. It is # AM10210. It has a capacity of 1,610 pounds at 65 psi and will fit 13 by 4-1/2 inch rims or 15 by 5 inch rims.
