Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I couldn’t be happier with the wheels/tires I purchased. The galvanized finish is nice and shiny. They almost look polished. The tires felt great. Nice and smooth while towing up to 80mph. Had no issues at all on my trip. Huge thank you to Brent J who helped me purchase them, and provided excellent customer service.

We ended up selling this pop-up after about a year and upgraded to a 17’ hybrid camper. I purchased the same wheels and possibly the same tires in a 16” and they have been great as well. The welds weren’t as clean on the wheels this time, but they have functioned perfectly at a great price. I would definitely purchase again.

by:

Tires look great, would have given 5 stars but the finish on the wheels are uneven kind of a stained look. One wheel is shinier than the other. Inner part of one wheel had a few chips in finish

by:

I ordered these to place on my boat trailer. I used them on my 2012 Trailstar trailer which carries my Tracker bass boat. It had load range C tires. I wanted to upgrade my tires and this item was exactly what I wanted. These fit perfectly. The tires were “fresh”....meaning that they were made only a months ago. The finish on the rims was much better than I was expecting. The welds on the back side of the rims looks to me to be quality work.

It’s been a year and I have absolutely no complaints. I would definitely purchase these again.

by:

Packed well, prompt delivery. Product looks to be quality. Smooth, easy transaction. I’ll be back for my other trailer needs.

by:

Karrier tires look perfect - a 5.0. One galvanized wheel coating looks a little sloppy on inside of rim, which will not be seen. Otherwise just fine. Delivery one day early and boxes in great shape. Overall a 4.8

by:

very happy with this tire & wheel combo....love having them come mounted and ready for installation also the galvanized rims give the appearance of chrome wheels also a plus

by:

Next day free shipping? WOW! etrailer processed my order lightning fast and I guess I'm the lucky guy that lives close to a warehouse. Spare and spare tire mount came well packaged. Thanks etrailer!

by:

I'm happy with the Radial Tire and Galvanized Wheel package etrailer helped me with. Between the pictures and video of the product on the website, multiple questions submitted and answers received (even though I interfaced with multiple agents on the phone and email, they're all up to speed on customer information), packaging, product quality, price, ease of purchase, and follow up after receiving the delivery(which was prompt), It's been an excellent experience! I will use etrailer again for future purchases and recommend as first choice!

by:

Excellent responses by Etrailer team, and product was as advertised, and on time delivery. Our 'go to' vendor for anything that goes on a hitch or receiver.

by:

Very nice tire. Pleased it’s not made in China. Made in Taiwan, the rim Korea. I would pay extra for products made in the USA, despite our clown presidents historically high inflation.

by:

Tires and rims looked great. Mounted on utility trailer with no issues.

by:

My order was received ahead of schedule which was excellent. Perfect communication. The tires were excellent. The galvanizing isn't high quality from from 6 feet away it looks good. This is the best place to order parts for my pop up period.

by:

This group came through like champions when I needed a set of tires for my boat trailer. Great service and shipping. I will definitely call on them again. Thanks all.

by:

Replaced my 14y/o trailer tires/wheels. Prompt delivery, 2 days after I ordered them. Great price as always from e trailer. Bailey was very helpful when I made changes to my initial order.

by:

Exactly what I was looking for and very fast shipping.

by:

I have always found etrailer products of high quality. These tires fit and looked perfectly.

by:

Item was ordered as a spare to carry for my boat trailer. It arrived in perfect condition and is exactly what I needed. I looked at many retailers before ordering from etrailer. Next time, I will start with etrailer. My experiences with them have always been great, even when I had to return an item.

by:

Got to speak to an actual person whom was very helpful, ordered the tires and wheels I need and they arrived at my door step two days later. Cost was significantly lower than others. Highly recommended!!

by:

Completely happy with the tires and wheels. Run em on my pontoon boat. Great buying experience and arrived on time, mounted and ready to install. Made several lake trips, including one trip to Lake Havasu in July. Tires held up in the hot summer and a 700 mile trip!!

by:

I needed to replace the worn out tires on my flatbed utility trailer and had been concerned about the weight capacity of the load range C bias-ply tires that were installed by the local tire shop just after I bought the trailer - combined 2700 lbs on 3500 lbs axles, 5400 lbs total. A couple of times, I've had 4000 lbs of landscaping bricks from the home improvement store plus the 1300 lbs trailer weight rolling down the highway. With these load range D tires, the combined tire weight rating is now 6400 lbs. I'll gladly pay the extra few dollars per tire for the LR D's over the LR C's for that piece of mind plus these galvanized wheels look a lot better than the old white rusty wheels do.

by:

they work great, hold the load of my boat and after a year still look and work like new

by:

Order was delivered on time as promised and as described I will be purchasing brakes for the trailer soon thanks etrailer

Still working and looking great thanks again

by:

First time purchasing from etrailer.com and I was very pleased with the prompt shipping and quality of the products I purchased. Purchased a set of new pre-mounted tires and wheels for my boat trailer and spare tire carriers for my boat and jet ski trailers.

by:

Tires were ordered on Good Friday and showed before noon on Tuesday. Great service as expected.

The tires are very nice and there was no shipping damage. I think they will work great on my camper for this years long distance tow.

Only little complaint is that the rims don't look like a lot of finish work went into them. They are rough, almost look like they were spray painted rather than galvanized. Surface has drips and runs. But otherwise is well covered and I don't anticipate them rusting like my old white painted rims did.

They may look better with a bit of hand polish work. But they are trailer tires not mag rims on a GTO so I can live with it.

by:

As advertised, good customer service and fast shipping! Thanks!

  • Are the ST175/80R13 Steel Wheels # AM31994 Machine Balanced?
The tire and wheel combos we carry like the part # AM31994 are not machined balanced. You can have the tire and wheel combos balanced at a local tire shop if you wanted to. However, this type of balance is not required to use on your boat trailer. What our tire manufacturers will do is line up the light spot on the tire with the heavy spot on the wheel. This is a type of balancing but not like how car tires are balanced (with weights on a balancing machine).

  • How to Measure Bolt Pattern to Pick the Correct Wheel
It sounds like you may have measured incorrectly, though you were on the right track. There are actually a couple of ways for you to find your bolt pattern. The first way is to measure from the center of one lug to a point halfway between the two lugs directly opposite on the bolt circle. The other method would be to use the distance between the center of one bolt hole to the center of the bolt hole adjacent to it. If the distance is: 2-5/8" - the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2 2-3/4" - the...

  • What is the Weight Rating Of My 175/80D-13 Tires
Since this tire is 175/80-13 bias tire, tires of this size have weight ratings up to 1,100 to 1,610-lb maximum load at 65 psi. This information is based on current tires we sell that are the same size like # AM31994. So the rating that I listed is not promised to be accurate, but this information can be used as a guide. If you are trying to determine the load capacity of the trailer you will need to use the axle to determine that. The easiest way is to look for a plate or sticker somewhere...

  • Are Kenda Karrier Trailer Wheel/Tire Combos Factory Balanced
The wheel and tire combos we sell are not balanced at the factory. When the tire is mounted to the wheel, the high (heavy) spot on the wheel is matched to the low (light) spot on the tire, which leaves the wheel and tire somewhat balanced. You may have the wheel/tire professionally balanced if you wish, but having perfectly balanced tires is not as important with trailer tires as it is with a passenger vehicle. A trailer tire size 175/80-13 will replace either an A78-13 or B78-13 trailer tire. This tire size will fit on a 4-1/2, 5, or 5-1/2 inch wide wheel. If you choose tires rated higher than your axle, you still have to go by the axle weight capacity. • Do Trailer Tires Come Already Balanced
The pre-mounted trailer wheel/trailer tire products we sell, such as # AM31994, are not dynamically balanced the way vehicle wheels/tires are. Trailer tires do not really need to be fully balanced the way vehicle tires do but you could have them balanced if you wanted. With your loaded trailer weighing around 1,400 to 1,600 pounds, I would actually run the Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM31994 at the 65 psi rating. This is due to the max capacity of the tire being 1,610 pounds. This also has an M speed rating, meaning it is rated up to 81 miles per hour. With all this being said, I highly recommend going with the # AM31994.

  • Should Tires Be Inflated To Pressure Listed On Trailer Or Side Of Tire
You should always follow what is printed on the side of the tire from the trailer tire manufacturer. Tires inevitably get replaced over time so what was printed on the trailer will no longer be accurate. For trailer tires, this will typically be the max psi. For example, the # AM31994 you were looking at has a max psi of 65 which is what the tires need to be at for the max load of 1,610 lbs.
