Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

We bought four tires and wheels and pulled our 5th wheel from Goldsboro back to Minnesota with no issues. Circumstances limited our travel last year and we didn’t travel much after that. I checked the pressure occasionally throughout the year and they held fine. We hope to get a few more miles on the tires later this year.

Review from a similar Karrier Aluminum in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I purchased this Kenda tire and wheel combo as a spare for my Aspen pop-up camper. It now gives me peace of mind as I’ve traveled many miles without one. It matches the existing wheels and tires on the trailer perfectly. etrailer had the best price for this item. I waited a little while for delivery but it was worth the wait. Thanks again etrailer for coming through with the parts I need!

Review from a similar Karrier Aluminum in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Perfect, exactly what I ordered. Arrived promptly and in new condition as expected. The tires even had the correct sidewall specified pressure on arrival.

I’ve done business with etailer before and experienced a manufacturer defect with a product and the issue was resolved and a new product sent the same day. Your outstanding customer service is what keeps me coming back. Thanks for being a customer service oriented business!

The only negative to these wheels is now I need to paint my trailer to keep it from looking like crap!

Review from a similar Karrier Aluminum in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I receive the tire and wheel package from Ups in one box. everything was packaged correctly with no damage. I replace the tires and wheels that came with my ultra tow trailer. This package is awesome the tires are about 2"wide and higher the the China bombs! We will be taking the trailer on a trip of 5000 miles later this summer I was concerned with the old tires and wheels I have no concerns with the new package. Oh they also look awesome !

Great wheels I got two of these to upgrade the tires for a 40x48 trailer.
If you are looking for an update I would suggest to go with this.

I wish they would have put the stickers on the back of the rims as the stickers do not come off clean.

Great service from etrailer, the wheels & tires look great. The only disappointment was the manufacturer put stickers on the face of the wheels that was hard to clean off.

The rims and tires is 5 stars, I am disappointed with the ship time. It shouldn’t take 2 weeks to ship something, if you have these items on stock.

Beautiful wheels. Tires look well mad. Good purchase price.

I have had these tires for one year now. The wheels still look great and the tire wear has been excellent. Tires seem to be real smooth while towing down the highway. Highly recommend them.

Thank you for the prompt delivery of the spare tire/wheel I ordered for my double triton pwc trailer.
I am headed out on a trip next week and wanted to make sure I had a spare tire for the trailer with me just in case.I ordered it a little late and was not sure it would arrive in time. But etrailer.com shipped it immediately and it arrived in a couple days, exactly 1 week before my trip. A perfect fit and look also!
Thank you etrailer.com

Review from a similar Karrier Aluminum in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Purchased two tire and wheel sets to replace a Load Star bias wheel and tire on my Peterson boat trailer prior to a long trip. The wheels appeared well made and good quality, and after riding a in the rain showed very little to no road dirt. Trip included four hours each way on interstate at 70 mph. The tires worked extremely well – less trailer wobble at speed, smoother trailering, improved handling of pot holes and road bumps, less perceived rolling resistance, less road noise, improved MPG (about 1.5 mph from prior trip), and a better trailering experience. The ordering experience from etrailer.com was excellent. The order shipped immediately. I was well informed during each step. The set was delivered neatly in a well packed box and was ahead of schedule.

Review from a similar Karrier Aluminum in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I installed these on a 40" x 48" utility trailer from N.T. They look much better and the tires have a higher speed rating than what came on the trailer. They fit nicely in the fender wells and have no issues with them. I torqued the lug nuts down to 90ftlbs for now and will monitor them. I think 90-100ftlbs should be adequate. Plus now I have a spare just in case it's needed.

The order did take 6 weeks to deliver but it was expected and the staff at etrailer was in contact. Happy with the purchase.

Nice tires and rims!! They came in a timely manner. They were bolt on ready. (minus the dang little warning stickers that leave goop wherever they were stuck) When ordering, I paid attention to the Load Rating. Never even thought that they would be SPEED rated?!?! So, I purchased tires that are rated at 65 MPH! But they have the correct Load Rating!! So, just a heads up, don’t make my mistake. check the Load AND Speed ratings BEFORE you buy!!! etrailers updates and follow up are excellent. Since the Speed Rating was my mistake, I did not check in with Customer Service. But my guess would be, based upon current experience, Customer Service is problem just as good as the rest of the services!

  • How Much Air Pressure to Put in a Trailer Tire and Do Trailer Tires Have to be Balanced
For any trailer tire you should always inflate them to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. For tire # AM32734 inflate it to 95 psi. You inflate them to their max because trailer tires are built with a thicker side wall compare to passenger vehicle tires. This is so they can handle more vertical load. If under inflated the thicker side wall causes excessive heat build up. Heat is the number one enemy of tires. Trailer tires do not have to be balanced. Trailers do not have drive wheels...

If you go with tire and wheel combo # AM32734 then you would fill the tires to 95 psi. The psi rating goes with the tire and wheel being used and is not specific to the trailer itself. I checked with the manufacturer of the wheel and they show it as having a 5mm positive offset. Going to a larger tire and wheel size is fine as long as the trailer has room for the larger size. • PSI Recommendation for Trailer Tire with 95 Psi Rating
You will want to inflate the tires to the max psi that the tires have. Trailer tires always need to be inflated to their max pressure to ensure you get their full capacity whereas the max psi rating for a wheel is just how much in total it can handle. The limiting factor for a wheel is typically the valve stem so you would need to determine it's capacity. If you need higher rated stems we have the part # AM20906 which is good for over 100 psi. The part # AM32734 does come with the correct...

I would first start by figuring out if your 5th wheel hitch or pin box can be moved to level your ride height as both those parts have adjustability. You will want to ensure you have at least 5-6" of clearance between your bed rails and the underside of your camper. If you wish to go with larger wheels and tires you will need to ensure you have enough clearance for the larger tires. If you currently have the 225/75R15 # LHAW124 they are 8.8" wide and 28.3" tall.
