Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

NICE, complete wheel and tire combo for my motorcycle trailer impossible to beat for the price

by:

Great service exactly like their items are displayed. Fast fast shipping. I will diffently buy for them again. Sorry I don't have pictures because this a rebuild trailer and still on going

by:

Just exactly what I needed for my Lee-sure lite xl camper. My old tires were at the 7 year mark and I hate the thought of a blow out. I looked all over the internet for replacements and etrailer had exactly what I was looking for...as usual. Should have checked here first. Ran into some supply chain issues which seems way to common right now, but the crew at etrailer kept me in the loop all the way. Always a calm and reassuring message. I have always had great luck with etrailer for my many towing accessory needs over the years. And, they continue to deliver with excellent products and support.

by:

This wheel and tire is exactly what I ordered. It is my spare for my tent trailer and, a perfect match to the wheels that I have. The price was lower than any other retailer and the shipping was exceptionally fast. Very pleased with the transaction and highly recommend etrailer for all your needs.

by:

Good quality wheel and tire. Arrived quickly and in great condition.

by:

Fast service great product

by:

Haven't tried them yet,. Only received one and ordered two, contacted them and they sent the other one out. Good to work with.

by:

Right product was shipped, seems high quality. Deliver faster than expected.

by:

Item just as described. Thank you!

by:

I received my tires fast and the price was right. Thanks

by:

Bought a new Leesurelite pop up tent trailer and was unhappy with the wheels that come from the factory. I searched around and choose these tires. What a huge difference! seems to pull straighter and increase clearance off the ground. Not sure why the factory does not install these! One recommendation is you replace the rubber Schrader valve with a metal one. Over the years I have had various small tires like this fail due to the rubber valve stems separating. Wish etrailer offered these with factory installed metal valve stems... I took the tire over to a local shop and had it dismounted and a short metal tire stem installed. I also run TPMS sensors on my trailer wheels and metal valve stems are a must

Great product.

PROMPT DELIVERY AND EXACTLY WHAT I NEED ED

by:

Just as described and fast shipping!

by:

I wanted a lower profile tire for my utility trailer on an 8 inch rim in a Load Range C. This tire I found on etrailer.com fit the bill perfectly. It brought my bed height down by about 1 1/2 inches and I didn't sacrifice much in load capacity. I am a repeat etrailer customer, they always ship extremely fast, and product quality has always been top notch which is why I keep coming back for all my towing needs.

by:

Tires and wheels came exactly as described and arrived a day earlier than expected. I had a question before I ordered and James answered all of my questions and made sure everything was answered before I hung up the phone.

What a great transaction. My second buy from etrailer. Their communication is excellent along with the website and ease of use. Packaging is also excellent. My shipping box had a hand hold for delivery people and my use. Smart thinking and professional.

My product is just as described. It was clean and air filled ready for use. The rim looks well build and coated white. The valve stem is quality and tire is ready to handle my weight class needs.

I am very happy with this purchase and my choice of etrailer to do business with. As my needs grow I expect etailer to be there to help.

by:

What a Great tire and rim combo. They tow very smoothly and the reason i bought them for my double jet ski trailer to lower it to the water so i did not have to back in so far. All and all a very cost effective tire and rim combo. I highly recommend this Kenda tire and wheel combo.

by:

This is my second experience with ordering tires for our boat trailer. I could not find this sz anywhere, until I searched online and came across the web site for etrailer.com. Needless to say how helpful their staff was in helping me to get the right tire, and also came on or off the rim. I now have ordered 2 more tires to replace the originals, and they were delivered at my door within 24 HOURS!! You're remarkable
E TRAILER..I will come back!

by:

Great looking wheel and tire combo. I would have liked to have the galvanized wheel but they weren't in stock. I settled on the white and they are a good deal. Nice quality wheel at a good price. I wish the previous owner of my trailer had bought these instead of trying to paint the old wheels. This is a different tread pattern than I'm used to so I'll find out how it handles soon.

by:

Bought these for my homemade trailer. Hauled a load of rock down trails, and gravel road. Loved the way they helped keep trailer from wondering unlike the skinny tires I replaced to put these on. I immediately ordered the next size up to give me more weight capacity, but will be keeping these for spares.

by:

Tires and wheels look great. The tires that came with my Lee-Sure Lite Cycle camper trailer were made by Carlise and lasted about 6,000 miles. I hope these Kendas go a little farther. The four stars were for appearance and fast shipping. If I get 6,000 miles or more, I will give it 5 stars.

by:

Needed a lower profile tire that still had a good load capacity and these fit the need and were a good value. I used it on a one wheel trailer on the back of my motor home.

by:

I was extremely pleased with not only the product (wheel and tire assembly), but also with the ease of ordering and the product information. I did not have to wonder if the wheel would be the right hole pattern. It was well-packed and arrived without blemish.
I am very confident that it will serve me well on my boat trailer!
Shipping was quick and efficient!
Thanks, y'all!

by:

These tires are on a small light weight (400 lbs. towing weight) trailer I pull with my motorcycle. They go down the road just fine.

by:

I am extremely happy with the quality and durability of the tires and wheels purchased one year ago. They show very little wear after being used extensively last summer and fall.

  • Is Air or Nitrogen in Trailer Wheel and Tire Kenda 165/65-8 # AM3H220
The tire part # AM3H220 from us which is not nitrogen filled. In this tire and wheel size we do not have any nitrogen filled options.

  • Can Kenda Bias Ply Tire/Wheel AM3H220 Be Rotated to Opposite Side of Trailer
Yes, it is perfectly safe to rotate Kenda bias ply tire/wheel # AM3H220 from one side of your tent trailer to the other. Many year back the early radial tires that were produced for autos could fail if their direction of rotation was reversed. Those early radials' construction caused them to have "memory" and changing direction of rotation for such tires was considered an unsafe practice. Today this concern no longer applies to the modern radial or bias ply trailer tires like this Kenda...

  • Smallest Diameter 8 inch Trailer Wheel and Tire
The smallest diameter 8 inch trailer wheel and tire size we offer is the 165/65-8 like the part # AM3H220 which has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. The overall diameter of this tire is 16-1/2 inches.

  • 8 Inch Trailer Wheel That is Between 3-3/4" and 7" Wide
There is a trailer tire with a wheel that is between 3-3/4" and 7" wide, the Kenda # AM3H220. This wheel is 5-3/8" wide, has a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern and has on it a 165/65-8 bias tire, which is 6.6" wide and has a 16.5" diameter. It also has a load range of C with a maximum capacity of 800 lbs at 70 psi.

  • Can Smaller Wheels/Tires be Used to Replace Current Wheels/Tires
You definitely can change to a smaller wheel/tire as long as the weight capacity is high enough for your loaded trailer (it is recommended to have your tires weight rating at least equal to that of your axle). The only time that you would have an issue for fitment is if you have brakes on your trailer. We do have Kenda 165/65-8 size tires that come with either a white wheel # AM3H220 or a galvanized wheel # AM3H240. Both options have a load range C (800 lbs at 70 psi) and come with wheels...

  • Wider Replacement for a 4.80/4.00-8 Trailer Tire
The best wider replacement option we have for a 4.80/4.00-8 trailer tire is a 165/65-8 trailer tire which is going to be pretty much the same overall diameter (16.1" vs. 16.5") so .4" larger but 2" wider (4.6" vs. 6.6"). If you have a 4 on 4" bolt pattern then I recommend the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel part # AM3H200 but if you have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern then I recommend the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel part # AM3H220.

  • Trailer Tire that is Narrower than Size 18.5x8.5-8
We have a narrower wheel and tire that is similar to what you have now with the size 16.5x6.5-8 which is the same as the modern size 165/65-8. For this mounted on a 4 lug wheel you'd want # AM3H200 or for a 5 lug # AM3H220. This would give you right at one more inch of clearance between the frame and the tire.

  • Replacement Tire and Wheel for Tires Rubbing Against Trailer
I recommend going to a more narrow rim and tire to solve your issue with sidewall rubbing. Depending on the load range you need, there are a couple of options. I suggest taking a look at the Kenda # AM3H220, which is a 165/65-8 tire with a maximum load of 800 lbs at 70 psi and has a rim that is 8" diameter x 5-3/8" wide. You can also take a look at the Kenda # AM30156, which is a 5.70-8 tire with a maximum load of 1,075 lbs at 100 psi with a rim that is 8" diameter x 3-3/4" wide. Both...

The tire size 165/65-8 is .4 of an inch taller than the 4.80-8 tire size and fits a rim almost two inches wider. The sizes are very similar but the 165/65-8 size is a bit different. Either size tire requires a different width rim. We have replacements on rims like the part # AM3H200 for if you have a 4 bolt wheel or part # AM3H220 if you have a 5 bolt wheel.

  • Can Same Rim Be Used for 4.80 x 8 and 165/65-8 Tire Sizes
I wouldn't recommend it. The 4.80x8 tire is designed to be used on a 3-3/4 in wide rim, while the 165/65-8 is compatible with a 5-3/8 inch wide rim. We sell the 165/65-8 tire as a wheel/tire combo, available on a 4 on 4 bolt pattern as part # AM3H200 or a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern white powder coated wheel as part # AM3H220. It's also available as a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern galvanized wheel as part # AM3H240. You can see the wheel/tire combos in that tire size by clicking the provided link.

The backspacing is not really the issue, it is the tire width on your current versus new tires. Most trailer tires have a zero offset meaning the mounting surface of the wheel is in the center of the wheel so the tire width becomes important. A 175/80-13 tire that you currently have is about 6.9 inches wide and 24.1 inches tall. A 205/65-10 like # AM3H390, is 8.3 inches wide and 20.5 inches tall.
