Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Tires & wheels worked out great for my hydraulic dump trailer that I fabricated. Will carry the weight needed.

by:

I build custom trailers and my customers trust that I give them the best available with each build. These tires, and etrailer are my go-to sources for quality products and excellent customer service. Kenda makes a great tire! You will not be disappointed.

by:

Ordered the same size tires as what I had on my trailer, however these tires were significantly wider and were pushed up against the inside wall under the trailer where they would easily rub against the frame if the lugnuts were tightened down. Return price was quite expensive even though this seemed to be a labeling issue rather than wrong order size. Make sure you have enough wiggle room to account for wider tire

by:

Perfect set of tires/wheels for my snowmobile trailer. Price was cheaper than most retailers in my area for just the tires. Fit great, looks great and gives me the peace of mind that I wont have to change a flat tire in the middle of a snow storm !! Thanks again

by:

Replacing old, rusted wheels and less capable tires on an old trailer - well worth it for the peace of mind when trailering over rough roads.

by:

ETrailer is awesome. Ordered early Monday morning and had a confirmation shortly after. Delivered 2 days later. Couldn't ask for anything better. Cheap prices and free delivery for my order. Thanks etrailer.

by:

These are like the second or third set of tires I have purchased from etrailer. The last set was purchased over 4 years ago. I use them on my 2 place snowmobile trailer, which keeps the sun off them at all times. (I carry my two 4 wheelers on it) 4 years and about 10,000 miles or so on the tires. I’m satisfied with that. I made I don’t know how many trips to Hatfield McCoy Trails. It’s a 7 hour trip. I would do it in the winter and summer months. I ask a lot from these tires and I get good service from them. I think the next time I purchase tires from etrailer, I going to use the 10 inch wheels and tires. They come in a load range E 10 ply tires. These are 8 inch wheels and tires, which are 8 ply tires. The 10 inch will travel just a little slower at highway speeds, plus they’re 10 ply.
Thank you etrailer for carrying good products

by:

Very happy with etrailer as a whole! Not enough miles on tires yet to give a meaningful review.

by:

A perfect fit for the rear of my 1997 Taylor Dunn B-15 industrial utility cart. These have a better load rating than the OEM, have a bit more traction with more footprint, and ride smooth!

by:

Fast delivery! Excellent communication of the transaction and delivery!! Now to get the 2 snowmobile tires on the trailer.

by:

After my local tire guy lied to me about availability of “d” rated tires, I tried etrailer. They had exactly what I needed at a great price. Tires work perfectly. Harvest emergency averted!

by:

I am totally satisfied! The product is excellent! The ordering process was super easy and my tires were hear very quickly. I installed them today and even the tire pressures were perfect! Thank you for a great experience!

by:

The 215/60-8 trailer tires were delivered very quickly and were exactly what I ordered. Nice job.
We'll see how they wear. The last set lasted over 10 years.

by:

Fit triton XT snowmobile trailer perfect! Shipping was super fast.

by:

Good quality tire. Price for D range was less than other online retailers selling C range tire! Very fast shipping. Satisified customer.

by:

Just exactly what I needed, best price anywhere for Kenda tires with the bonus of wheels. They will serve my needs well. They came quickly just as promised! Excellent service, excellent product!!

by:

Upon unboxing discovered tire flat.Someone had intentionally put a packing staple in the sidewall of the tire rendering it unusable.

I am sorry to hear that the tire was damaged in packaging. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you to have the tire replaced and I will share this review with our shipping department.

by:

I was looking for tires for my snowmobile atv trailer. The price was good and they are load range d. every one else has load range c so these will be better for hauling more weight. I’m sure they will work great.

by:

Second set for my trailer. Long lasting tread. Cost less to buy tire and wheel from etrailer than local purchase of tire alone.

by:

Very satisfied, product looks great and shipped fast!!

Perfect fit and look great

by:

These tires/wheels are a lot better than the OEM set that came originally on my trailer. The tires have a more rounded tread profile and they don't seem to be wearing like the squarer type tire. I have them on an 8'x12' trailer that is almost maximally loaded all the time. I've gone about 3K miles with these tires and I'm not seeing wear like the original tires. The wheels still look new w/o chipping or peeling paint nor any rusting. I would buy again when needed.

by:

I got the tires exactly the day you said and it match the ones that I have on my trailer,I dont know how to send pictures but I will have daughter do it next if possible I am 100% satisfied with my order thank you very much, james

Service is stellar, I ordered on Tuesday and product onsite Thursday 3 states away. This is now my go to supplier for specialty tires .

by:

Great tires
1 year later and still holding
up great. I just wish it snowed a lot right now so I can hook up and head upstate

by:

Extended my axle on a jetski trailer 3". Had to make a splice for the axle and weld a mounting plate for 1 1/2" extension each side.
I needed lower in the water because the ramps are flat.
THANK U ETRAILER FOR GREAT PRODUCTS

  • Does the Center Pilot Hole of a Trailer Wheel have to be Exact
Not exactly. A Pilot hole that is 2.80 inches is going to be 0.05 inches larger than a 2-3/4 inch pilot hole. But the only way to get that accurate of a measurement is to use dial or digital calipers. If you measure with a ruler or tape measure you will not be able to get the most accurate measurement. Another issue is that some times the pilot hole dimension does not even matter. If the wheel attaches to the hub using lug nuts then the pilot hole can be larger, just not any smaller. If...

  • Could the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel AM3H323 Replace 7.50x8 Wheel/Tire
That tire size is not a standard trailer tire size so the best solution we can offer would be to replace the wheel and tire with something that would fit. If you can give me the width, diameter and bolt pattern of your current wheels I can get you the closest match we offer. The part # AM3H323 that you referenced has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern, a tire section width of 8.9 inches and an outer diameter of 18.1 inches.

I pulled a sample of this tire from our warehouse to take the measurements you need. From the rear rim surface that contacts the hub (near the bolt holes) to the innermost edge of the rim the distance is 4-inches. From that same point to the innermost edge of the tire the distance is 4-1/2-inches. The dimensions are noted on the linked photo.

  • Can 5.70-8 Tire/Wheel Combo Be Replaced With 215/60-8 Combo On Small Trailer
I do not think the diameter of the tire will pose any problem since a 215/60-8 tire is only about .20 of an inch bigger diameter. The problem you may have is the width of the rim. the width of a rim for the 5.70-8 wheel is 3-3/4 inches and the width of a rim for the 215/60-8 tire is 7 inches. The additional 3 plus inches may cause issues for clearance on the fenders and also on the inside of the wheel well. You may want to check the clearance you have with the smaller tires to be sure....

  • Does Maximum Load Listing for Trailer Tire Refer to Individual Tire
You are correct - the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8 Inch White Wheel # AM3H323 referenced in your question has a maximum load of 1,165 pounds at 70 psi. This maximum load refers to a single tire. If you have four tires on your trailer, they will have a combined maximum load of 4,660 pounds (1,165 x 4). This will be the same for any trailer tire you look at. To determine the combined capacity of the tires, you will simply multiply its maximum load by the amount of tires you have...

  • Looking for a Wider Trailer Tire than a 205/60-10 That is Not Over 20-1/2 Inches Diameter
For 10 inch trailer tires you are limited to the 205/65-10 size. This tire size is a little over 8 inches wide. To go wider you would either need to go down to a 215/60-8, such as # AM3H323, or go up to a 14 inch or larger which would put you well over the 20-1/2 inch diameter. A 215/60-8 tire could work. It is almost a 1/2 inch wider than a 205 and it would only be 18.3 inches in diameter. If you have the clearance needed between the tire side wall and trailer then this is probably the...

  • Difference Between Bias Ply And Radial Ply Trailer Tires And What Does Load Range Mean
The main difference between bias ply and radial ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The cords underneath the tire are run in different directions. On a bias tire, the cords run at a 32 degree angle from the direction of travel and on a radial tire, the cords will run at 90 degrees from direction of travel, or across the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. Because of the construction of a radial tire, the tire has more flex and will allow for more ground contact. That will improve traction...
