Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

by:

Your team is awesome. Excellent job on website, processing, delivery and product. The tires and rims look great. Thanks!!!

by:

Work as expected on Snowmobile trailer!

by:

Good tires for my snowmobile trailer. They do seem to rust a bit after a long year but it’s cosmetic more than anything. Great price on eTrailer so I just replace when they get old. Product is good but buying from eTrailer is better- always easy and good customer service, good price and free shipping

Thank you for your quick and excellent service.

works and fits great

by:

Looks nice but have not put it on the trailer yet. Ask me again in 6 months

by:

I bought 2tires and they were mounted and inflated to PROPER pressure and ready to roll straight out of the box. I appreciate the convenience of ordering from Etrailer.Com

by:

Wheels fit and the quality was as described. The ordering process was fast and the tires arrived in a timely manner. Customer service was top notch. Will be ordering from again in the future. 5 stars!!!

by:

Works great!

by:

Great product at a fair price.

by:

These are a great bolt-on replacement for the pitiful LoadStar tires that came with my trailer. These are a bit larger diameter and have a better load and speed rating. Treadwear appears to be better as well.

by:

No complaints here! Great replacements for my snowmobile trailer! If these wheels last 20 years the same as the last ones did I’ll be more than happy! Tires were properly inflated and ready to go!

by:

etrailer.com is great. I have previously purchased a hitch from them and am very satisfied with it. So when I needed tires and wheels for my snowmobile trailer I compared them with local retailers and found the same merchandise to be less expensive, and as always, delivered right to my door.

by:

This tire and rim package is an excellent deal. Most tire places quoted a replacement tire only which was the same price. Got a new rim and tire delivered to my door. So convenient.
Note original bias tire vs your new one

by:

Great tires and rims for the price

Donnie

  • Distance from Mounting Flange to Furthest Point of Tire Sidewall on the Kenda Tire/Wheel # AM3H390
I went a pulled a Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel # AM3H390 from our warehouse and measured the distance from the mounting flange out to the furthest point out on the tire and I found this dimension to be 4 inches. I attached an FAQ article on trailer tires that you might find informative as well.

  • Recommended Replacement 20.5 8-10 Size Trailer Tires on 1992 Coleman Americana Sequoia
The metric sizing similar to your 20.5 8-10 is 205/65-10. Since your 1992 Coleman Americana Sequoia is fairly light, 1,550 pounds from what I found, I recommend going with part # AM3H390 which is a Load Range C tire rated for 1,100 pounds on a wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. These also have an 81 mph speed rating.

  • Is Tire Size 20.5 x 8-10 the Same as a 205/65-10 Trailer Tire
The modern day equivalent of a 20.5 x 8-10 tire is going to be a 205/65-10. The dimensions are as close as you can get to the old size. We have several tires and tire and wheel combos in this size with various bolt patterns (if a wheel is needed). You can use the FAQ I have linked and click on 205/65-10 to see all the options. I have also included a link to an FAQ on how to measure for bolt pattern. For a 5 bolt you most likely have a 5 on 4-1/2. Tire and wheel combo # AM3H390 that you...

You can go to a larger 10 inch tire and wheel as long as you have the wheel well and trailer frame clearance available for the larger size. We typically recommend at least 3 inches of space between the top of the tire tread and the top of the wheel well to allow for suspension travel. Your existing 215-60-8 trailer tire has an overall diameter/height of 18.1 inches and a width of 8.9 inches. • What Does 5 on 4-1/2 inch Bolt Pattern Mean in Relation to Trailer Wheel
The phrase 5 on 4-1/2 inch is the bolt pattern of the wheel. This means that there are a total of 5 lugs that hold the wheel to the hub and the distance across the hub from the center of one lug straight across is 4-1/2 inch. This is the bolt pattern that the part # AM3H390 you referenced has and is by far the most popular 5 lug bolt pattern.

Two tires with a weight capacity of 1100 lbs will have a combined weight capacity of 2,200 lbs, but you would still be limited to the 2,000 lb capacity of the axle. You will always be limited by the lowest rated component whether it is the wheels, tires, axle or suspension. The tire size 205/65-10 is a suitable replacement for the old tire size 20.5x8-10. To determine whether this is the correct wheel for your application you should check the bolt hole pattern of your current wheels. Since your old wheels have 5 bolt holes, they likely have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. I would recommend measuring to verify that this is your bolt pattern since it is an older wheel. The 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern is the only 5 bolt hole pattern we offer for this tire size....

  • Benefits of Changing Trailer Tires to Higher Load Range
In your situation changing to a higher load range tire will not affect the odds of a puncture (since the ply rating does not actually refer to layers of material in the tire but rather its strength). Moving to a higher load range DOES offer the advantage of having those higher-rated tires running a bit cooler. Any trailer tire's worst enemy is heat. Excess heat can be prevented by observing the tires' rated weight capacity, speed rating (65-mph unless stated otherwise) and psi pressure....
